When buying a smartphone, especially from hand or on foreign sites, it is critical to understand when exactly the device left the conveyor. Release date affects the relevance of the version of the operating system, the state of the battery and even the presence of hidden defects that may have manifested in early batches. Many users confuse the date of the model’s release with the actual time of the assembly of a particular instance, which leads to errors in assessing the condition of the gadget.
Xiaomi, like most electronics manufacturers, does not display this information on the main settings screen in the usual format. However, the system remains digital traces that allow you to accurately determine the age of the device, in this article we will examine all the available methods, from simple codes in the “call” to professional analysis methods through ADB and service menus.
Understanding the age of your smartphone is not only important for estimating its market value, but also for planning updates. By knowing the exact year and month of production, you can predict how long it will take for your device to receive security patches and new versions of MIUI or HyperOS.
Checking through the service code in the application "Phone"
The fastest way to access technical information about a smartphone is to use special devices. USSD-In Xiaomi and Redmi devices, there is an engineered code that opens the hidden test menu, and to do this, launch the Phone app and dial the combination ##6484##. If the menu does not open automatically, try pressing the call button after dialing, although the system usually responds instantly.
Once you log into the CIT (Customer Interactive Test) menu, you'll need to find a item that's associated with version or device information, often called Version or CI Info. Inside this section, you'll look for the Build Time or Compile Time field. This is the date that indicates the time the firmware was installed in the factory was compiled, and because the firmware is installed on the day it's built, that date accurately reflects the age of the phone.
⚠️ Note: Some global firmware versions may restrict access to the full engineering menu by the manufacturer. If the code doesn't work, try entering ##4636##, but it gives less details about the build date.
It is important to distinguish the firmware compilation date from the sale date. The difference between the two is usually 1 to 3 months while the device is logged and hits the shelves. To accurately determine the age of the gadget, this method is the most affordable and does not require a connection to a computer.
Analysis of the information in the menu “About the phone” and the status of the battery
The standard settings menu also hides useful data if you know where to look. Go to Settings, then select About Phone. Here you are interested in the MIUI Version or OS Version bar. Click on it repeatedly (about 7-10 times) until you see a message about enabling additional options, although in modern versions of HyperOS this method may simply show the system logo.
A more robust built-in method is to check battery status. In the About Phone menu, look for Battery and performance or just Battery. In the upper right corner, there is often a menu icon (three dots or gear) and you go to the battery settings and you see the total life of the device or the number of recharge cycles, which indirectly indicates age.
- 📱 Serial number: The "General Information" section is sometimes indicated SN, The first digits of which can be coded for the year of issue.
- 🔋 Charge cycles: If the phone shows more than 500 cycles, it is clearly more than two years of active use.
- 📅 Activation Date: In some regions, when you link to your Mi Account, the date of the first activation is recorded.
Don’t rely on just a visual inspection of a box or check, as documents can be lost or forged. Software methods inside the Android system itself provide more objective data that is harder to change without deep intervention.
💡
If you don’t have a specific date in your battery settings, look for the installation date of Google or Xiaomi system apps, which are usually set the day the device first starts.
IMEI transcription and verification on the official website
The most authoritative source of information is the manufacturer's own database. Each Xiaomi smartphone has a unique IMEI ID. You can find it on the back of the device (if it is removable), on the box or by typing *#06# in the phone's application. Write down a 15-digit number.
Next, go to Xiaomi’s official authentication site, enter IMEI in the appropriate box, the system will give you model, color, memory and, most importantly, activation date or warranty expiration date. By subtracting one year (standard term) from the warranty expiration date, you will get an approximate purchase date that almost coincides with the release date.
| Parameter | Where to find | What does it mean? |
|---|---|---|
| IMEI 1 | ||
| SN (S/N) | ||
| MIUI Version | ||
| Warranty |
There are also third-party services, such as IMEI.info or Sndeep.info, that aggregate data from carriers and manufacturers, and can show a more detailed history of the device, including the date of the first connection to the network of a cellular operator.
Using ADB to get the exact assembly date
For users who want maximum accuracy and are not afraid of working with the command line, the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) method is the “gold standard”; it allows you to pull hidden properties from the system that are not displayed in the interface, which will require a computer and enabled debugging mode over USB on your smartphone.
Turn on Developer Mode by seven times clicking on the MIUI version in the About Phone menu. Then, in the Developer Menu, activate Debugging via USB. Connect the phone to your PC and execute the command to get the build date property:
adb shell getprop ro.build.date.utcThis command will return the timestamp in Unix format. To translate it to an understandable date, you can use online converters or a command in the terminal. It is also useful to check the property ro.build.version.incremental, which contains the build number and often the date in the format. V12.5.3.0.RKGMIXM_20210915.1234.56, where 20210915 — it 15 September 2021 year-end.
⚠️ Attention: To work with ADB You need to install device drivers and Android platform SDK Tools on the computer. Without that, the connection won't be established.

Analysis of factory sticker and box
Physical markers are often undervalued, but they carry direct information. On the factory box, in addition to barcodes, the production date is often printed in YYYY/MM or YYYY.MM.DDD. Look for small labels next to the Android or MI logo.
Also note the sticker on the back of the case (if it is not torn off) in some regions (e.g. EAC for the Eurasian Union) be sure to indicate the date of manufacture, it can be entered manually or printed in a separate font, different from the main text of the sticker.
- 📦 Barcode on the box: Frequently contained date in the last digits.
- 🏷️ Certificate EAC/CE: On the label with certification, the production date is mandatory.
- 🔌 Package: The release date of the charger (if original) usually coincides with the phone’s date +/- 2 weeks.
If you buy a device without a box ("b / y"), inspect the tray for SIM-Some Xiaomi models have laser engraved on the tray itself. IMEI, and sometimes next to it is indicated the year of issue in the format of two digits.

Indirect features: Android version and security patches
Even without complex manipulations, you can roughly determine the age of a phone by looking at the version of the Android Security Patch Level patch. This information is in the Settings → About phone menu. If the phone is new and has never been updated, the patch date will be close to the release date.
But this only works for new devices. If the phone has been updated, the security patch will be relevant. So if you look at the basic version of Android, for example, if the device came out in 2026, but there's Android 10 on board, and Android 14 is already relevant, it's a clear sign that the phone has been around for a few years and hasn't received major software updates in a long time.
Redmi Note and Mi have a clear life cycle, and if you know the model, you can match it to the history of releases, for example, the Redmi Note 10 series came out in early 2021, and if you're offered this phone as the "new 2026 year of release," it's either inventory (which is rare) or a refurbished device.
💡
The combination of the security patch date and Android version allows you to determine with up to a month accuracy when the device last received updates or was assembled.
