Have you made an important audio recording on a Xiaomi smartphone but can't find it? Or accidentally deleted the recording and want to restore it? The problem is that the manufacturer doesn't always obviously place the tape recorder files - their location depends on the version of the MIUI, the phone model, and even what application you used. In this article, we'll look at all possible ways to store records, including hidden folders of the system, and learn how to quickly find audio through embedded and third-party tools.
Xiaomi has a tendency to change folders frequently after firmware updates, such as MIUI 12, where the recorder's recordings were in one place, and MIUI 14 could move them to another, and some models (like the Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO F4) have unique storage settings, and we've taken all of these nuances into account and gathered up-to-date information for 2026.
Standard ways to store records of a voice recorder on Xiaomi
By default, Xiaomi's built-in voice recorder stores files in one of the system folders of internal memory, and their location depends on the version of MIUI:
- π MIUI 14/13/12.5: /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ or /storage/emulated/0/Recordings/
- π MIUI 11 older: /storage/emulated/0/Recorder/ or /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/voice_recorder/
- π For models POCO: /storage/emulated/0/POCO/Recorder/ (sometimes duplicated in /Recordings/)
- π If you used Google Dictator: /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.google.android.apps.recorder/
Important: the /storage/emulated/0/ path is the root directory of the phone's internal memory. In some file managers, it can be displayed simply as/or Internal Drive. If you connect the phone to a PC, look for the Internal Storage folder.
On Xiaomi models with MediaTek chip (e.g. Redmi) 9A or POCO M3) Records can be automatically saved to the external SD-map, if inserted, along the way: /storage/{SD-CARD-ID}/MIUI/sound_recorder/. To find out ID maps, use the Files by Google app or type in the address bar of the explorer /storage/ β All connected storage devices will be displayed there.
How to find records through the built-in MIUI conductor
The easiest way is to use the standard Files app (Blue folder icon) and here is a step-by-step instruction:
- Open the Files app (if it is not on the home screen, search through the system search).
- Go to the Category tab (bottom of the screen) β select Audio.
- In the list, find the Recorder, Recordings or MIUI folder (click on it).
- Record files usually have an extension.m4a,.mp3 or.amr and named by date (e.g, REC_20260515_143022.m4a).
If there are no recordings in the Audio section, try:
- π Type:audio in the search bar of the explorer β this will show all the audio files on the device.
- π Go to the internal drive β manually open folders MIUI, Rec or sound_recorder.
- π Click on three dots in the upper right corner β Show hidden files (sometimes hidden in hidden directories).
Enable the display of hidden files
Check the folders MIUI, Recorder, Recordings
Use a filter by file type (type:audio)
Try searching for a keyword "REC"-->
Tip: If you use a voice recorder often, add a folder with records to Favorites in the Explorer. To do this, click on three dots next to the folder β Add to favorites. So you can quickly access it.
Search through the application "Dictophon" (Sound Recorder)
Most Xiaomi smartphones have a standard Dictaphone app (English: Sound Recorder or Recorder) that not only records the sound, but also stores the history of all sessions.
- Open the Dictaphone app (the microphone icon on a red or blue background).
- In the main window, you'll see a list of all the records, sorted by date. Click on the right one to listen.
- To open the folder with the file, click on the three dots next to the record β More β Open the folder.
If the app is not on the main screen:
- π Find it through a search system (swipe down on the home screen) β enter the recorderΒ»).
- π₯ If the app is removed, install it again via Google Play (name: Mi Sound Recorder).
- βοΈ On some models (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra) voice recorder is built into the application Tools (Tools).
Attention! If you delete the recording through the Dictaphone application itself, the file will disappear from the storage folder, and you can only restore it using specialized programs (we will discuss this below).

To prevent the record from getting lost, export it immediately after creation: open the record in Recorder β click Share β select Save a copy to the cloud or to another disk.
Where to look for records if you used Google Recorder
Many Xiaomi users install Google Recorder instead of the standard one. This app saves files elsewhere and has additional features, such as transcribing speech into text.
| Type of record | Storage path | File format |
|---|---|---|
| Regular recording | /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.google.android.apps.recorder/ | .mp3 or.m4a |
| Transcribed recording | /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.google.android.apps.recorder/transcriptions/ | .txt (text) +.mp3 (audio) |
| Notes with notes | /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.google.android.apps.recorder/marked/ | .mp3 |
| Archival records | Google Drive Cloud (Daddy Recorder) | .mp3 |
The Google Recorder feature is automatic sync with Google Drive, to check the recordings in the cloud:
- Open Google Drive on your phone or PC.
- In the menu on the left, select My Discs. β Recorder.
- It stores all records made through Google Recorder if synchronization was enabled.
Important: If you delete a record from Google Recorder, it will also be deleted from the cloud in 30 days (gets into the Recycle Bin). To recover, go to the Recycle Bin on Google Drive and return the file.
How to Recover Deleted Recordings of a Recorder
If you accidentally delete a record, don't despair, you can try to restore it. Success depends on how long it has been since you deleted it and whether you used your phone after that (new data can overwrite old files).
Recovery methods:
- π Through the basket: In the conductor MIUI Go to the Recycle Bin (Lumpster Badge at the bottom) and the deleted files are stored there for up to 15 days.
- π οΈ Using software: Use DiskDigger, Recuva (for PC) or Dumpster (dashbox application). These tools scan memory for the remnants of deleted files.
- π± Through Backup: If you have backup enabled in Mi Cloud, check the archive: Settings β Mi Account. β Mi Cloud β Backup copy.
- πΎ On PC: Connect your phone to your computer and scan the internal memory with EaseUS Data Recovery (select Deep Scan Mode).
Warning: β οΈ Don't install recovery software on the same disk where the records were stored! It can permanently overwrite deleted data. Use external data. SD-card.

How to Change the Default Records Saving Folder
If you don't like the standard location of the records, you can change it.
- Open the Dictaphone app.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner β Settings.
- Select the save folder (or Storage location in English).
- Please specify a new folder (for example, on the SD-map or cloud).

- π Create a folder manually through a conductor (for example, /Recordings/MyVoice/).
- π§ Use a file manager with root rights (such as Root Explorer) to redirect the save path (requires unlocking the bootloader).
- π± Install a third-party recorder (such as Easy Voice Recorder) where you can flexibly configure the save path.
Attention! β οΈ If you choose to save the external SD-Make sure it is formatted as internal memory (via Settings) β Otherwise, when the card is removed, the records may become inaccessible.
Frequent problems and their solutions
