Why recordings from the recorder โdisappearโ and where to look for them
You recorded an important conversation, lecture or voice note on Xiaomi Redmi, but can't find a file in the gallery? This is a typical situation: the standard Dictaphone app (or MIUI Recorder) stores audio not where users used to search for media. Unlike photos that automatically get to DCIM/Camera, records are often "hidden" in system folders or even on an external memory card.
Complicating the problem, Xiaomiโs MIUI can change storage paths depending on the OS version, smartphone model (Redmi Note 12, Redmi 10C, POCO X5, etc.) and even regional settings. For example, some devices duplicate the recordings to the Mi Cloud, while others remain only locally. In this article, we will analyze all possible storage locations, including hidden folders, and learn how to recover deleted files.
Before you dig into the file manager, check two things:
- ๐ฑ Model of your Redmi: New devices (2022-2026) may have different paths than older devices 4X, Redmi 5).
- ๐ Updates MIUI: After the firmware update, the com.miui.soundrecorder application sometimes resets the save settings.
Standard folders for recording voice recorder on Xiaomi
In 90% of cases, audio files are in one of these directories. Open any file manager (e.g. MI File Manager or Total Commander) and check the paths:
| Type of memory | The way to the folder | File format | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal memory. | /storage/emulated/0/Recorder/ | .m4a, .mp3 | The main folder for MIUI Recorder on most models. |
| Internal memory. | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ | .amr, .awb | Older versions of MIUI (up to 12.5) or entries with economical bitrate. |
| SD-map | /storage/XXXX-XXXX/Recorders/ or /MIUI/sound_recorder/ | .m4a | XXXX-XXXX โ unique ID The path may be different. |
| The Mi Cloud Cloud | โ | .m4a | Available only when synchronization is enabled in the settings of the recorder. |
If the Recorder folders or sound_recorder absent, try:
- Start the recorder and make a test recording lasting 5-10 seconds.
- After saving, open the file manager again and update the list (swipe down).
- Search by extensions: type in the search bar.m4a or.amr.
๐ก
On some models (e.g. Redmi K50), records are saved in /Documents/Recordings/. If you canโt find files in standard directories, check it.
How to find records through the settings of the recorder
The easiest way is to use the built-in tools of the Dictaphone application:
- Open the MIUI Recorder app (Mic icon on a red or blue background).
- Slap the icon ยซโฎยป (three points) in upper right corner.
- Select My Records or History.
- Click on any entry and hold your finger to make the context menu appear.
- Select More โ Show in the folder (or Open the folder).
The system will automatically open the file manager in the audio directory. If the Show in the folder button is missing, your version of MIUI Recorder does not support this feature - use manual search on the paths from the previous section.
Open up. MIUI Recorder|Make a test record.|Check the Recorder folder in internal memory|Check the folder for SD-card (if any)|Use search for extensions.m4a and.amr-->
Hidden folders and system directories: where else can there be records
Sometimes files are hidden in non-obvious places.
- ๐ง Application Errors: The recorder could save the file to a temporary folder (/cache/).
- ๐ Manual Path Change: User or third-party software redirected the save to another directory.
- ๐ค Optimization MIUI: The firmware can archive old records in /MIUI/backup/.
Check these system paths (you may need a root or super-user file manager, such as FX File Explorer, to access):
/data/media/0/Recorders/
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/files/
/data/user/0/com.miui.soundrecorder/cache/How to enable the display of hidden folders
If you use a third-party voice recorder (such as Easy Voice Recorder or ASR Voice Recorder), the paths will be different:
- ๐ค Easy Voice Recorder: /storage/emulated/0/EasyVoiceRecorder/ or /Documents/EasyVoiceRecorder/.
- ๐ฑ ASR Voice Recorder: /storage/emulated/0/ASR/.
- ๐ Google Dictator: /storage/emulated/0/Recorder/Google/ (Only for devices with Google services).
How to recover deleted recordings from a voice recorder
If files have been deleted, don't panic: they can be returned within 30 days (provided that the disk space has not been overwritten).
1.Recovery through MIUI basket
Starting with MIUI 12, deleted files are placed in a shopping cart that can be stored for up to 15 days:
- Open the MI File Manager.
- Slip on the basket icon in the bottom menu.
- Find files with the.m4a or.amr extension.
- Select them and press Restore.
2. Recovery programmes
If the cart is empty, use the utilities:
- ๐ ๏ธ DiskDigger: Scans internal memory for deleted audio files.
- ๐ Recuva (for PC): connect your phone to your computer in mode MTP And scan the drive.
- ๐ฑ Dumpster: Recycle Bin app that saves deleted files (you need to install it in advance).
๐ก
The faster you start recovering, the better the chances of returning a file. Every new record or application installation reduces the likelihood of success!
โ ๏ธ Warning: Don't save recovered files to the same disk you're recovering them from! Use an external memory card or cloud.
Transferring records to the PC or cloud: how not to lose data
To avoid losing important audio files, set up automatic backups:
Method 1: Synchronize with Mi Cloud
If you have a Mi Account:
- Open your Settings โ Accounts โ Mi Cloud
- Turn on the sync for the recorder.
- The recordings will be available on i.mi.com in the Records section.
Method 2: Export to PCs
Connect your phone to your computer via USB and:
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Select File Transfer Mode (MTP).
- ๐ Go to the Recorders folder or MIUI/sound_recorder.
- ๐ค Copy files to a hard disk.
Method 3: Cloud services
Upload the recordings to:
- โ๏ธ Google Drive: Automatically backups the Recorder folder if you configure Google Photos.
- ๐ฆ Dropbox or Yandex Drive: Use the Autoboot feature for the audio folder.
๐ก
To save space, convert.m4a to.mp3 records using applications like Audio Converter, which will reduce file size by 30-40% without loss of quality.
Problems with saving records: why the recorder does not work
If the records are not saved at all, check these points:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The record is cut off. | Limitation MIUI duration (max. 2-6 hours). | Use a third-party recorder (Hi-Q MP3 Recorder). |
| Files are empty (0 KB) | Lack of disk space or access permission error. | Clear the memory and restart the phone. |
| The recorder won't start. | The com.miui.soundrecorder app crashed. | Clean the cache in Settings โ Applications โ Recorder โ Storage. |
| Records are kept in unreadable format | .amr or.awb codecs are not supported by the player. | Install VLC or convert to.mp3. |
โ ๏ธ Note: Redmi with MediaTek processor (e.g. Redmi) 9A, Redmi 10A) There may be no hardware support for records in the format.m4a. In this case, the recorder saves files in.amr with low quality.
