Accidentally removing an important image or an entire gallery is a stressful situation that many smartphone owners are familiar with. When you swipe the wrong way or mistakenly click on Delete in the Gallery, panic first occurs. However, Android, and in particular Xiaomi’s MIUI or HyperOS shell, provides several layers of data protection that often go unnoticed by users.
File recovery is directly dependent on how long ago they were erased and what sync settings were active at the time of the incident. Files deleted more than 30 days ago without a backup in the cloud are almost impossible to recover by standard means, which is why it is important to act quickly and know the exact paths of navigation through the system folders of the device.
In this article, we will take a look at all the possible places where your images can be hidden, from the standard shopping cart to hidden system partitions. Basket in the standard MIUI Gallery
The first and most obvious place to look is the built-in Recycle Bin feature, where in modern versions of MIUI, deleted images don't disappear instantly, but move to temporary storage, where they stay for 30 days, after which the system automatically destroys them to free up space.
To check the contents of the shopping cart, open the standard Gallery app. In the lower right corner of the screen, find a three-dot icon or Albums label, then scroll down to Devices. That's where the Recently Deleted folder is located. If you use the older version of the shell, this section may simply be called "Basket."
Inside this folder, you can select specific photos or click the "Select All" button to restore the entire gallery at once. Note that recovery is possible only if less than a set deadline has passed since the deletion.

To check, go to your smartphone settings and select Mi Account. Go to Cloud and make sure that the Gallery Sync switch is active. If it is positive, click i.mi.com from your computer or any other device by logging in to your Mi Account.
In the web interface, select the Gallery icon. On the left or in the control menu, you will find the item "Recently deleted." Search in the application Explorer and system folders

Open File Manager and go to Internal Memory, you'll need DCIM and Pictures folders. Inside the DCIM/Camera folder, you'll have the main camera shots. If there's a file there but it's not in the gallery, there may be a hidden.nomedia file at the root of the folder that hides the content from the media scanner.
Also worth checking is the MIUI/Gallery/cloud/cache folder. In some cases, cached thumbnails of deleted photos may be saved here, although their quality will be low. To find hidden files, turn on the display of hidden elements in the Explorer settings.

And don't forget about third-party solutions like Dropbox or OneDrive that may have been installed before. Check their camera autoload settings. Sometimes a forgotten app becomes the only save for data loss.
Specialized recovery programs
If standard methods fail, you can use specialized software to recover data, scan the phone's memory for "orphaned" files that have not yet been overwritten by new data, and the effectiveness of such tools depends on the time elapsed since the deletion.

Risks of using recovery programs
There's also a method of connecting the phone to a computer and using desktop versions of software. USB (USB Debugging) some utilities can read memory sectors more efficiently, but on today's Android-encrypted disk-encrypted smartphones, this method is getting worse.
Preventing the loss of photos in the future
The best way to combat data loss is to back up regularly. Set up automatic sync with Mi Cloud or Google Photos. It takes a couple of minutes, but it will save your memories at a critical moment. Don't rely on the device's internal memory alone.
Periodically copy important archives to an external hard drive or computer, the human factor and technical slugs have not been canceled, and it is also useful to check the health of backups once a month by opening files from the cloud.
Be careful with cleaner apps ("Cliners"). They often suggest removing "unnecessary" photos that may actually be important. Always check the file list before confirming the cleanup.
