SD-The card does not work on Xiaomi: “carrier damaged” – what to do?

You inserted a microSD into your Xiaomi smartphone, but instead of the usual file access, you saw a message “carrier is damaged” or «SD-This error is one of the most common problems for owners of Redmi devices, POCO and Mi, especially after the update MIUI Or incorrectly extracting the drive, and in 80 percent of cases, the data can be recovered and the card itself can be brought back to life without going to a service center.

In this article, we'll look at all the possible causes, from software failures to physical damage, and give you step-by-step instructions with illustrations for each solution. Importantly, some methods (such as formatting) will permanently delete data from the card, so we'll try to restore files first. If you have a SanDisk card, Samsung EVO or Kingston, the chances of success are higher due to built-in security mechanisms.

If the card is physically broken (cracked, bent, contacts oxidized), the software methods will not help - you will need to repair or replace. But in 9 out of 10 cases, the problem lies in logical errors of the file system, which can be corrected independently.

Why Xiaomi says “carrier damaged”?

Mistake «SD-Xiaomi's map is damaged for 5 main reasons. Let's go through each in detail so you can accurately diagnose the problem before treatment.

  • 🔹 Improper extraction: pulled the card while writing files or without the function Safe extraction in the file MIUI. This causes damage to the partition table.
  • 🔹 Failure of the file system: most often affected cards with FAT32 or exFAT after interrupting the formatting.
  • 🔹 Viruses or malware: Some Trojans specifically damage the drive structure to hide their presence.
  • 🔹 Update MIUI: After the firmware of the smartphone (especially on the Redmi Note) 10/11 or POCO X3/X4) Compatibility with memory cards may be compromised.
  • 🔹 Physical wear: cheap class cards C4/C10 squash 1000–2000 loop.

The easiest way to check what's going on is to insert the card into another smartphone or computer, and if the error is repeated, the problem is with the card itself, and if it's working on another device, it's Xiaomi's firmware or MIUI settings.

The First Steps: What to Do Before Data Recovery

Before you try to fix the card, do 3 critical steps that will save you time and increase your chances of a successful recovery:

  1. Do not write new files to a damaged card – this can overwrite lost data.
  2. Check the contacts: gently wipe the copper stripes on the map with a smooth (no pressure!) - oxidation is often disguised as serious errors.
  3. Use an adapter: if the card is not readable on your smartphone, connect it to your PC via a card reader. Sometimes the problem is with the Xiaomi slot, not the drive.

If the card is determined by a computer, but asks you to format it, don't agree! This will delete all the data. Instead, move to the file recovery section.

☑️ Preparations for recovery SD-map

Done: 0 / 5

Method 1: Recovering data from damaged data SD-map

If you have important photos, videos or documents on the map, try to restore them first.

  • 💾 Recuva (simple interface, suitable for beginners).
  • 💾 PhotoRec (works with heavily damaged cards, but without a graphical interface).
  • 💾 DiskDrill (there is a free version with a limit of 500 MB of recovered data).

Instructions for Recuva:

  1. Connect the card to the PC through the card reader.
  2. Start Recuva, select the file type (such as Images or All Files).
  3. Specify the letter of your disk. SD-map.
  4. Press Analysis and wait for the scan to be completed (may take up to an hour).
  5. Tick the files you want and click Restore by selecting a folder on another drive (not on the map itself!).

Important: Recovered files can be corrupted. Photos are often opened with artifacts, documents with hieroglyphics. The longer you use a map after losing data, the worse the result will be.

What if the program does not see the map?
If SD-The card is not defined even in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc), try: 1. Connect via another USB-port (preferably 2.0). 2. Use a different card reader (some cheap adapters don't transmit power). 3. Check the card on another PC - maybe the problem with your computer's drivers.

Method 2: Verify and correct errors through Windows

If the card is detected by a computer but it gives errors when reading, use the built-in chkdsk utility, which corrects file system logical errors without losing data (in most cases).

Instructions:

  1. Connect. SD-PC-card.
  2. Open Command Prompt on behalf of the administrator (click Win + X → Terminal (Administrator)).
  3. Enter the command: chkdsk E: /f /r where E: is your letter SD-Cards (check in this computer).
  4. Wait until the process is completed (it can take 10–30 minutes).

If the utility says, "CHKDSK is not acceptable for RAW disks," it means that the file system is completely destroyed. In this case, move to method 4 (formatting).

Method 3: Formatting SD-maps (if data is not important)

If you don't need to restore files or if all the data is already saved, format the card. This is the most reliable way to get it back to work. On Xiaomi, there are two ways to do this:

  • 📱 Through Smartphone Settings: Go to Settings → Warehouse → SD-Click Format (or Clean in new versions) MIUI). Select the file system: FAT32 (up to 32 GB or exFAT (over 32 GB).
  • 💻 PC (more secure): Connect the card to your computer. Open this computer, right-click on SD-map → Format. Choose. FAT32 or exFAT, press Start.

If the formatting ends in an error (“Windows can’t complete the formatting”), use the SD Formatter utility from the SD Association:

  1. Download the program from the official website: sdcard.org.
  2. Select your card in the list.
  3. Press Format and wait until it is completed.

💡

If the card doesn’t work again after formatting, check it on another device.Perhaps the problem is with your Xiaomi microSD slot – try cleaning it with compressed air or neatly with a needle (turning off your smartphone!).

Method 4: Correction via DiskPart (for power users)

If standard formatting doesn't work, use DiskPart, which cleans the map at a low level and creates a new partition table. Attention: this method deletes all data without recovery.

Instructions:

  1. Connect. SD-PC-card.
  2. Open the Command Prompt on behalf of the administrator.
  3. Enter the commands in order: diskpart list disk select disk X (where X is your number). SD-Clean create partition primary format fs.=fat32 quick (or fs)=exfat >32 GB exit

Once completed, the card should be identified as new. If DiskPart writes "I/O error," it's a sign of a physical malfunction, and it's time to change the card.

💡

The clean command in DiskPart deletes all partitions on the map. If you get the disk number wrong (select disk X), you can accidentally erase the data from the hard drive! Always check the number by commanding list disk.

Method 5: Virus Check and Reset Xiaomi

Sometimes, the carrier is damaged error is caused by a virus in MIUI or a system settings failure, and we'll check both.

  • 🛡️ Virus scanning: Install antivirus (like Dr.Web Light or Malwarebytes). SD-Delete the threats and reboot the smartphone.
  • ⚙️ Reset Storage Settings: Go to Settings → Memory. → Storage settings. Click Reset (not to be confused with a full reset of your phone!) Remove and repaint the card.

If the problem has occurred after the MIUI update, try to roll back to the previous firmware version via Fastboot or Mi Flash Tool.Instructions for a specific model, look for the 4PDA or XDA Developers forum.

How to verify the card for authenticity?
Many cheap cards (especially those with AliExpress) have understated real volume. H2testw: 1. Download the utility from the official website. 2. Select SD-map and press Write + Verify. 3. If the actual volume is less than the declared, the card is fake - replace it.

Method 6: Physical repair and card replacement

If none of the software methods worked, the problem is probably hardware, and here are the signs that it's time to change the map:

  • 🚨 The computer can't see the card even after DiskPart.
  • 🚨 The card heats up when connected.
  • 🚨 On the body there are cracks or traces of oxidation.
  • 🚨 When connecting, clicks are heard (a sign of a damaged controller).
