The sudden disappearance of important screenshots from a Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphone causes panic in any user. It would seem that you just took a photo yesterday, and today the Gallery app is empty or only displays old archives.
Fortunately, in most cases, data is not physically destroyed immediately, but only ceases to appear in the interface or is marked as free space. The MIUI and HyperOS operating system have built-in security mechanisms such as the Recycle Bin and synchronization with the Mi Cloud, which often go unnoticed. Before despair, you need to conduct a thorough diagnosis of the state of storage.

Primary Diagnostics and Checking of the Basket

Search for hidden and protected albums
There is a Hidden Album feature in MIUI that allows you to hide photos and videos from prying eyes, and users often accidentally activate this feature or forget that they hid files there, and then can not find them in the general stream.
To get into a hidden album, open the Gallery app, go to the Albums tab, and pull the album list down until the lock icon appears. The system will ask you to enter a password, pattern lock, or fingerprint set to protect privacy.

Sometimes the Gallery app simply doesn’t see new media files because of a Media Scanner failure, in which case the files are physically on the disk but not displayed in the interface.
Go to the root directory of internal memory. The standard way for Xiaomi cameras is DCIM → Camera. If you use other apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, screenshots), check the Pictures, WhatsApp → Media or Screenshots folders.
If you have files in the Explorer and you don't have files in the gallery, try renaming any folder (for example, adding a dot at the end of a name), and then returning the name back. This action will force the Android system to scan the media content.
