Many smartphone owners face the unfortunate situation of a device that starts to run slowly and notifications of space shortages appear at the most inopportune moment. If you have Xiaomi, the problem with crowded memory is solved quite quickly thanks to the built-in tools of the system. However, to get a real result, it is not enough just to press a button — it is important to understand which files take up space and how to safely delete excess.
In this article, we’ll look at not only standard cleaning methods, but also hidden features that will help free up gigabytes of space. You’ll learn how cache cleaning differs from deleting data from apps, and why memory card formatting is sometimes the only right solution. MIUI and the new HyperOS offer powerful tools that are often ignored by users.
Before you start taking any drastic measures, you need to diagnose the storage, which will allow you to understand what exactly eats up your volume: photos, messengers or system files, a competent approach to memory management will prolong the life of your gadget and eliminate the constant lag of the interface.
Analysis of vault occupancy
The first step to freeing up space is to analyze in detail what exactly takes up space on your device. Android, and in particular the MIUI shell, has a built-in analyzer that shows the distribution of memory by category. Don't rely only on the general numbers in the settings, as they often hide the real gigabyte eaters.
For an accurate picture, go to Settings → About Phone → Storage. Here you will see a color diagram where each sector is responsible for a specific type of content: apps, images, videos or system files. Often it turns out that the lion's share is occupied by social media cache or forgotten downloads from the browser.
It is important to pay attention to the category “Other” or “System Files”. If this partition inflates to inadequate size (more than 10-15 GB on an empty phone), this may indicate an accumulation of error logs or residual files after deleted programs.
Use of the built-in Security application
The easiest and safest way to clean up memory is to use the standard Security app, which is pre-installed on all Xiaomi smartphones. This tool is designed specifically for working with the MIUI and HyperOS file system, so the risk of removing important system components here is minimal.
Launch the app and click on the big green Cleanup button, and the system will scan and suggest that you delete temporary files, uninstall remnants, and junk, but don't blindly trust the automation: Before confirming an action, carefully review the file list, especially if there are documents or photos.
☑️ Check before complete cleaning
Inside the app, there's Deep Clean, which allows you to work with specific categories in more detail, and you can find duplicate photos, large files you haven't opened in a long time, and rarely used apps, and removing APK installation packages through this tool can instantly free up 1 to 5 GB of space.
⚠️ Attention: The “Cleanup” function in the Security app sometimes marks the cache of navigation maps (such as Yandex.Maps or Google Maps) as garbage. If you use offline maps, make sure you do not delete downloaded regions.
Clearing the cache and data messengers
Memory consumption leaders are traditionally messaging apps like Telegram, WhatsApp and Viber, which store every photo, video and voice message you receive in your phone’s memory, even if you’ve already viewed them and don’t need them. Standard cleaning often doesn’t affect that data, so you need to work inside the apps themselves.
Telegram handles the situation most elegantly thanks to the cloud structure. Go to Settings → Data and memory → Memory use and click Clear Cache. You can set up automatic cleaning, for example, once every 3 days or week, so that the phone never gets clogged with media files. This will not delete your correspondence, they will remain on the server.
WhatsApp is more complicated because it's locally stored. You go to Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Management. It'll show you the most spaced chats. Be careful: deleting media will also affect your email history if it wasn't stored separately in the cloud.
- 📱 Open the settings of a specific messenger and find the section "Storage".
- 🗑️ Use the built-in cache cleanup feature, rather than removing the app entirely.
- ☁️ Set up auto-delete media files for group chats so they don’t save to the gallery.
- 📂 Manually check folders in the file manager (for example, Android/media), Where to find heavy video.
Management of applications and their data
Apps accumulate data not only in cache form, but also in user profiles, temporary files and databases. Over time, the data folder can exceed the size of the application itself by a factor of dozens, as is the case with browsers, news aggregators and social networks.
To clear the data of a particular application, go to Settings → Apps → All apps. Select the desired program (for example, YouTube or Chrome) and click Memory. Here you will see two buttons: Clear cache and Clear all data. The first is secure and deletes only temporary files, the second will return the application to the “just after installation” state, deleting your logins and settings.
