The message “phone memory is full” on the Xiaomi screen always appears at a bad time: when you need to take a photo, install an application or update the system, and the problem occurs even on devices with 128 GB and 256 GB of internal memory. What is the reason? The fact is that MIUI reserves some memory for system needs, and the cache of applications, junk files and duplicate media quickly eat up the remaining space.
In this article, we will discuss 12 Proven ways to free up memory on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO — From basic (delete unnecessary files) to advanced (clean hidden partitions through the ADB). We pay special attention to unique functions MIUI 14/15, You'll also learn why, even after cleaning, the memory "returns" after a few days and how to prevent it from being wiped out.
Quick diagnosis: what exactly is taking up memory?
Before you clean everything, identify the culprit for the overflow. MIUI has a built-in memory analyzer, but it's hidden in the back of the menu.
- Go to Settings → About the phone → Memory.
- Slip on the memory usage schedule (not "Clean" label).
- The system will show a detailed report by categories: Applications, Media, Files, System Data.
Note the Others section, which often hides gigabytes of garbage: error logs, temporary update files, and Google Play Services cache. If this partition takes up > 10% of memory, it needs to be manually cleaned (see section 4).
2. Cleaning the application cache without data loss
Cache speeds up applications, but it grows out of control over time, like Facebook or TikTok can accumulate 1-2 GB of cache in a month, and clean it safely, and it won't delete your accounts or settings.
Method 1: Cleaning for a separate application
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Select an app (like YouTube) and tap “Clear Cache.”
- For complete cleaning, click "Clear Data» (⚠️ This will reset the application settings!).
Method 2: Mass cleaning the cache of all applications
- 📱 Go to Settings. → Memory. → Clear the cache (in some versions) MIUI Path: Settings → Additionally. → Cleanup).
- 🔍 The system will show a list of applications with the largest cache - sort by size.
- 🧹 Select unnecessary and click “Clean».
⚠️ Warning: Do not clear the cache of system applications (MIUI System, Security, Google Play Services, all of which are not absolutely necessary.
💡
If after cleaning the cache, the application began to work slower, restart the phone - MIUI will rebuild the cache from scratch.
3. Removal of duplicate photos and videos
Photos and videos take up to 70% of the memory on most Xiaomi smartphones, the problem is that MIUI automatically creates duplicates when editing photos, and messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram) store copies of the sent media.
Built-in MIUI tools:
- 📷 Open the gallery. → tap three points in the upper right corner → «Management» → «Duplicate».
- 🎥 For video: in the same gallery, select "Albums» → «Video» → Sort by size and remove unnecessary rollers.
- 🗑️ Don't forget the folder. DCIM/.thumbnails — Here are the photos that can be safely removed.
Third-party annexes:
- 🛠️ Files by Google (free) – Finds duplicates, large files and offers cleanup.
- 🔍 CCleaner – scans memory for garbage, including residual files after deleting applications.
| Type of file | Where to find | Is it safe to remove? |
|---|---|---|
| Duplicate photos | Gallery → Management → Duplicates | Yes. |
| Cash messengers | WhatsApp/Media folder or Telegram/Telegram Images | Yes (except for important media) |
| Miniatures (thumbnails) | DCIM/.thumbnails | Yes. |
| Logs of error | /data/log (requires root) | Only if there is root |
4. Cleaning of hidden system files (without root)
Even after you delete applications and media, your memory can still be filled, because of hidden files that MIUI doesn't show in standard Explorer.
Method 1: Through the built-in conductor
- 📂 Open the Files app (Folder icon).
- 🔍 Slip on three lines in the upper left corner → «Categories» → «System files».
- 🗑️ You can delete: Downloads (old) APK, PDF, documents); update cache (folder) cached_update); Logs (log or bugreport folders).
Method 2: Through ADB (for Advanced)
If the phone gives you a memory filled error, but the settings show a lot of free space, the problem may be in /data.
adb shell
su
cd /data
rm -rf *.log
rm -rf *.tmp
rm -rf lost+found/*
exit⚠️ Warning: These commands will delete all logs and temporary files, but will not affect user data. However, if you enter incorrectly, you can damage the system!

5. Transfer applications to a memory card (if supported)
Not all Xiaomi smartphones allow you to port apps to microSD, but if your model supports this feature (like the Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO X3 Pro), it can free up up to 5-10 GB of internal storage.
How to move applications:
- Insert a memory card (UHS-I or A2 class is recommended for speed).
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Select an app (like Spotify) → Storage → Change → Select a memory card.
- Confirm the transfer. Some data (cache) will remain in the internal memory.
Limitations:
- ❌ Not all apps support portability (especially system and anti-cheat games).
- ❌ On some models (Xiaomi) 12T, Redmi K50) function disabled by the manufacturer.
- ❌ The memory card should be formatted as an internal storage (this will delete all the data on it!).
⚠️ Note: If you remove the memory card after transferring the applications, they will stop working, and the speed of the applications from the card may be slower than from internal memory.
6. disable automatic media saving from messengers
Messengers are the main memory eaters. WhatsApp, Telegram and Viber by default store all received photos and videos in the gallery. In a year, this can take 10-20 GB.
WhatsApp:
- 📱 Open WhatsApp. → three-point → «Settings» → «chat».
- 🖼️ Turn off "Save incoming media».
- 🗑️ Delete old media: Go to Files → WhatsApp → Media and clear folders.
Telegram:
- 📱 Open Telegram. → «Settings» → «Data and memory».
- 📁 In the Storage section, select Never Save for photos and videos.
- 🧹 Clear the cache: "Clear Telegram cache" (can free up to 5GB!).
Viber:
- 📱 Go to "Settings» → «Media».
- 🖼️ Turn off Media Autoboot for Mobile Data and Wi-Fi.

7.Use of cloud storage and backups
If you're running out of space on your phone, you can move some of the data to the cloud. Xiaomi offers its own solution, Mi Cloud, but it's only good for backups. For media, you'd better use Google Photos or Yandex Drive.
Mi Cloud (for backups):
- ☁️ Go to Settings. → Accounts. → Mi Cloud.
- 📱 Enable backup for “Contacts”, “Messages”, “Notes».
- 🔄 Click on Sync and wait until it is completed.
Google Photos (for photos and videos):
- 📷 Install Google Photos from Play Market.
- ☁️ In the settings, enable “Backup and Synchronization».
- 🗑️ After uploading all photos to the cloud, you can delete them from your phone (they will remain in Google Photos).
Yandex Disc (for documents):
- 📄 Install Yandex Drive and log in to your account.
- 📁 Download important documents (PDF, DOCX) cloudy.
- 🔗 Use the “Autoboot” function for the Download folder.
| Service | Free seat | What to store | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Cloud | 5GB | Contacts, SMS, settings | Little space, no media support |
| Google Photo | 15GB (with Gmail) | Photos, video | Free storage compression |
| Yandex Disc. | 10GB | Documents, archives | Slow loading of large files |
8. factory reset (extreme case)
If none of these things worked, and the phone still shows "Memory is full," the calculations are that 10 to 20 GB is free, and the last option is hard reset, which will delete all the data, but return the phone to its original state.
How to reset:
- 🔄 Go to Settings. → The phone. → Resetting settings.
- 📱 Select “Erase all data».
- 🔐 Enter the password (if set) and confirm the reset.
What to do after the discharge:
- 📲 Restore data from a backup (Mi Cloud or Google Account).
- 🚫 Don’t install all apps at once – do it gradually to track which one fills up the memory again.
- 🛡️ Install. SD Maid or Files by Google to monitor memory.
⚠️ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note) 9 Pro) after the reset, an error may appear: “Failure to mount /data». This means damage to the memory partition, which means you'll need to flash it over the Fastboot.
💡
Factory reset is the only way to remove system debris that is not visible to the user, but only use it if other methods have not worked!
