Xiaomi Cloud: How to Download Photos from Backup

Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphone owners often have to transfer personal data when changing devices or cleaning internal memory.Mi Cloud automatically saves pictures, but not everyone knows how to correctly and quickly retrieve them. Simple copying through Explorer is not enough, since files are stored on remote servers of the company.

There are several proven methods to access your media content: you can use an official web interface, a gallery mobile app, or specialized computer software, and the specific method you choose depends on where you are at the moment and what device you have on hand to perform the operation.

In this article, we will take a closer look at each of the options available, learn about synchronization, how to bypass free fare restrictions, and how to download bulk, and address data security and common download errors.

Account preparation and synchronization check

Before you start uploading files, you need to make sure that the backup process was successful. Often users try to download photos that are physically not in the cloud storage due to network errors or switched off sync. Check the status of your Mi Account account in your phone settings.

Open the Settings menu → Mi Account → Mi Cloud. Make sure the switch opposite the Gallery is active and is lit blue. If the sync has been suspended, turn it on and wait until the process is complete. You can see the status by clicking on the menu item itself.

It's important to understand the difference between optimizing storage and fully loading. With Storage Optimization enabled, the original photos are replaced by thumbnails on the device, and the full versions are stored only in the Mi Cloud, which is what we'll be restoring.

⚠️ Note: If you have recently changed your Mi Account password, you will need to re-authorize all services. Without current credentials, access to backups will be blocked by the security system.

Make sure your device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. Mobile internet can be unstable when transferring large amounts of data, which will lead to interruption of the process. For comfortable operation, it is also recommended to free up enough space on the internal drive.

Download photos via the web version of Mi Cloud

The most universal way to access your images is to use a browser on a computer or other smartphone, which requires no additional software installation and allows you to manage files from any device with Internet access. The web version interface functionally repeats the folder structure on the phone.

Go to i.mi.com and log in using your Mi Account. The system can request a sign-in confirmation via SMS code or push notification on a trusted device, which is standard two-factor authentication.

Once logged in, select the Gallery icon, and you will see a grid of all uploaded images, and you can view them by date, album, or type (video, selfie, screenshots), and select the files you want to download with a click or a Ctrl button for multiple selection.

After highlighting, click the "Download" button in the top menu. the browser will form ZIP-If you've selected a video, the process may take some time, as the server needs to pack heavy files.

The web interface has a limit on the number of files you can download at a time, which is typically 1,000 photos or videos, and if you want to upload the entire archive in a few years, you have to do it again, choosing the files by period.

Using the Gallery app on a smartphone

If you don’t have a computer on hand, but you have another Xiaomi smartphone or the same one after you reset, you can use the built-in app, which is ideal for recovering individual albums or recent shots directly to the device’s memory.

Open the Gallery app and go to the Cloud tab, which shows all photos that are on the server but not yet uploaded to the device (marked with the arrow cloud icon).

You can use a recovery function to download all the data, but be careful: simultaneously uploading thousands of high-resolution photos can put a lot of stress on the processor and cause the gadget to heat up.

You can set up download options in the gallery settings, like downloading originals only over Wi-Fi or allowing mobile data to be used, which will save traffic if you're not connected to a wireless network.

After downloading, check the folder. DCIM/Camera Or Pictures in the file manager, make sure that the metadata (date of shooting, geolocation) is saved correctly. EXIF-Data is transferred along with the file.

Download data via Mi PC Suite

For users who prefer desktop software, Xiaomi offers Mi PC Suite, a utility that is limited in support for new models, but remains a powerful backup and data recovery tool for many devices.

Install the program on your computer and connect your smartphone with a cable. Backup mode allows you to select Restore, where you can select categories of data, including images from the cloud if your account is tied.

The software allows you to create a full copy of your phone's content, including data from the Mi Cloud, onto your computer's hard drive, a convenient way to make a local archive copy before selling the device or flashing it.

It is worth noting that modern versions of the HyperOS shell and MIUI 14/15 are gradually moving away from using PC Suite in favor of cloud technology and wireless transmission.

Solving loading and synchronization problems

Sometimes the download process may be interrupted or never started, most often due to overcrowded storage. Xiaomi provides only 5 GB of free space. If the limit is exhausted, new photos are not uploaded, and old ones may become unloadable in their original quality.

Check disk space occupancy in the Settings menu → Mi Account → Storage Management. If there is not enough space, delete unnecessary backups of the recorder or old videos, or purchase an additional subscription. Without free space, operations with files are blocked.

Another common cause is an unstable internet connection or use. DNS-In some regions, access to Mi Cloud servers can be difficult. DNS 8.8.8.8 or use an alternative network.

⚠️ Attention: If sync failures occur, don’t rush to delete your account from your device.This can result in complete data loss if the local copy has already been cleared by the optimization function.

If a photo is marked as “Loading Error,” try opening it in the Gallery app, sometimes triggering a re-synchronization process, and cleaning the Gallery app cache through the app menu also helps.

Use the Clear Cache feature only for the Gallery app, but don't choose Delete Data unless you're sure all photos are already in the cloud. This can delete local thumbnails and album settings.

Transferring data to the new Xiaomi phone

The easiest way to download photos is not to download them manually, but to let the new phone pick them up itself. When you first set up a new Xiaomi or Redmi smartphone, the system will offer to recover data from the cloud.

Enter your Mi Account and password. During the setup phase, select Restore from Mi Cloud. The phone will automatically start pulling up contacts, messages, notes and, of course, photos. The process is background and does not require constant monitoring.

This method ensures that all albums, including system ones (Screenshots, WhatsApp, Telegram), fall into place, the folder structure will remain completely intact, you will only have to wait until the indicator in the notification curtain disappears.

If you switch to a different brand phone, that won’t work, so you’ll have to use a web version to manually upload archives or third-party data migration apps that support cloud imports.

Automatic recovery when you first set up a new device is the most reliable way to save album structure and metadata without manual intervention.

Alternative methods and third-party services

Beyond native tools, there are third-party solutions, and some users prefer to sync the DCIM folder with other cloud services, such as Google Photos, Yandex.Disk or Dropbox, which creates additional copy and independence from the Xiaomi ecosystem.

You can set up automatic downloads in the settings of the Gallery app itself or through third-party syncs. However, it is worth remembering privacy: when you transfer data to third parties, you entrust them with your personal photos.

There is also the option of using WebDAV protocol if your cloud storage provider supports it, but for Mi Cloud, direct support for WebDAV is not officially announced and requires complex workarounds that do not guarantee stability.

Backup your external hard drive regularly, and digital data is subject to risks ranging from account locks to technical failures on your company's servers, and local hardware is the only way to be 100% sure that your memories are safe.
