Why Xiaomi contacts disappear and what to do first
You opened a phone book on a Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro, and instead of hundreds of saved numbers, a blank screen? The situation is unpleasant, but in 90% of cases, solvable. Contacts on Xiaomi smartphones can disappear for several reasons: from accidental deletion to failure of sync with the cloud. Before you panic, check three key points:
1. Make sure contacts are not hidden. Sometimes users accidentally activate the display filter (e.g., show only contacts with photos). Go to the Contacts app, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Display all contacts.
2. Check your Google/Mi Account. Contacts on Xiaomi are by default linked to your Google or Mi Cloud account. If you logged out or changed your password, sync may have been interrupted. Go to Settings β Accounts and make sure your primary account is active.
3. Eliminate hardware failure. Rarely, but it happens that the loss of contacts is associated with damage to the memory of the phone. Try to restart the device (press Power + Volume up for 10 seconds). If after the reboot contacts do not appear, start recovery.
Method 1: Restore Contacts with Google Account
If your contacts have been synced to Google, you can return them in a few clicks, and this method works even after you reset your phone to factory settings.
- Open Settings on your Xiaomi and go to Accounts and Sync (or Google depending on the MIUI version).
- Select your Google account (if not, add by entering your login and password).
- Click on Account Sync and make sure the slider opposite Contact is active. If not, turn it on.
- Wait 5-10 minutes. Contacts should come up automatically. If that doesn't happen, click on the three dots in the top right corner and choose Sync Now.
β οΈ Note: If you recently deleted your contacts and they disappeared from Google, check the web version of Google Contacts. There is a shopping cart where deleted numbers are stored for 30 days (then deleted permanently:
- Go to contacts.google.com.
- On the left menu, select the basket.
- Check the necessary contacts and click Restore.

Method 2: Recovery via Mi Cloud (for Xiaomi users)
Mi Cloud is Xiaomi's proprietary cloud storage that automatically backs up contacts if the feature is enabled.
- Open Settings β Mi Account (or Xiaomi Cloud in new versions of MIUI).
- Sign in to your Mi Account (if not logged in).
- Go to the Mi Cloud section β Contacts.
- Click on Restore and select the latest backup (see the creation date in the list).
π‘ Important: Mi Cloud only backs up contacts once every 24 hours if your phone is connected to Wi-Fi and over 20 percent charged. If you haven't connected in a while, the last copy may be outdated.
If the recovery through Mi Cloud has not worked:
- π Check if the backup function is included in Settings β Mi Cloud β Synchronization settings.
- π± Make sure your phone has enough memory (minimum 500MB of free space).
- π Try to restore contacts through the web version of Mi Cloud (Contacts section) β Basket).
What if Mi Cloud does not restore contacts?
Method 3: Local Recovery from MIUI Backup
If cloud sync is disabled, there's hope for local backups that MIUI creates automatically when you update your system or manually, to find them:
- Open the Backup app (or Backup in Global Firmware).
- Select the Local Backups section.
- Look through the list of available copies. Look for the one that says Contacts.
- Click on the copy and select Restore. Confirm the action.
β οΈ Attention: Local copies are stored in the phone's memory and can be deleted if space is scarce. If you haven't backed up manually, chances are automatic copies are missing or outdated.
If there are no local copies, try to find the backup file manually:
- Connect the phone to your computer and turn on File Transfer mode.
- Go to MIUI/backup/AllBackup.
- Look for files with the.bak extension (for example, contacts_20260515.bak).
- Copy the file to your computer and use Mi Backup Extractor to extract contacts.
| Recovery method | Internet is required | Time to recover | Chances of success |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Account | Yes. | 5-15 minutes | βββββ |
| Mi Cloud | Yes. | 10-20 minutes | ββββ |
| Local copy of MIUI | No. | 5-10 minutes | βββ |
| Third-party programmes | No. | 20-30 minutes | ββ |
Method 4: Using third-party apps (if nothing worked)
If standard methods don't work, you can try specialized data recovery tools that scan your phone's memory for deleted files, including contacts.
- π± Dr.Fone (Wondershare) - Recovers contacts, messages and media files, works without root rights, but with them the efficiency is higher.
- π EaseUS MobiSaver β supports Xiaomi and other Android devices. Free version restores up to 5 contacts.
- π οΈ Tenorshare UltData β Deep Memory Scanning, but Requires a PC Connection.

- Run Dr.Fone and select Android Data Recovery.
- Check Contacts and click Next.

- Avoid installing suspicious utilities β they may contain viruses.
- Donβt save restored contacts over existing ones β export them to a separate file (e.g..vcf).
- Before scanning, turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data to avoid overwriting deleted files.
π‘

- π Restart your phone and check again.
- πΆ Try inserting. SIM-Card to another phone and import contacts from there.
