Xiaomi smartphone owners often wonder about the safety of important negotiations, especially after upgrading to MIUI 12. the system interface has undergone significant changes, and standard search paths may not be obvious to users accustomed to previous versions of the shell.
By default, all audio conversation files are written to the device’s internal memory, but the exact directory address depends on the caller program you choose. Global firmware versions often use the Google app, while Chinese or re-flashed versions use the standard MIUI Dialer.
Understanding the structure of the MIUI-based Android file system will allow you to quickly find the tracks you want, transfer them to your computer or transfer them through instant messengers without losing quality. Let's take a look at where these files are hiding and how to manage their storage.
Standard paths in system storage
For most users using Xiaomi’s standard call interface, files are stored in the root folder of internal memory, the most common scenario for devices that did not replace system components with Google’s counterparts.
To get to the records, you need to open any file manager, like a standard Explorer, and then you go to the Internal Memory section and find a folder called MIUI, and that's where the basic data of the system is concentrated.
Inside the directory MIUI I need to open the folder. sound_recorder, and then go to the catalogue call_rec. This path is the final destination for all automatic recordings of stock shell conversations.
- 📁 Open the “Conductor” or “Files” application».
- 📁 Go to the internal storage (Internal Storage).
- 📁 Find and open the folder. MIUI.
- 📁 Consistently move into sound_recorder → call_rec.
Files in this folder usually have an extension of.m4a or.mp3, which provides good sound quality at a relatively small size. File names are generated automatically and contain the date, time of the conversation and phone number or contact name.
⚠️ Note: If you delete the folder call_rec or the files inside it manually through the Explorer, they will not be restored through the Recycle Bin, as this is a direct edit of the file system.
💡
For quick access to frequently used folders, add a path to call_rec Your favorite file manager.
Google Dialer features on MIUI 12
The situation changes dramatically if your smartphone has a global firmware version installed or you have independently upgraded the Phone app to the Google version, in which case the Android security system changes the logic of data storage to increase privacy.
The conversation records made through Google Dialer are no longer in the open folder of internal memory in the form of ordinary audio files, but are hidden in a secure system partition, access to which is limited to third-party applications and simple file managers without root rights.
You can listen to these recordings exclusively through the interface of the Phone application itself, and you need to open the application, go to the recent tab, select the contact you want, and click on the voice recorder or microphone icon next to the number.
If you try to find these files through Explorer, you will encounter a void or directories that are missing, which is normal behavior in the system to protect the user's personal data from unauthorized access.
Can I get my records out of Google Dialer?
Some users try to get around this limitation by installing older versions of the app or modified builds, however, this can lead to unstable operation of the call system on MIUI 12.
Search through the built-in dictaphone
An alternative and often more convenient way to access the archive is to use the built-in Dictaphone app, which is integrated with the MIUI 12 shell with the call recording system, combining all audio in one place.
Run the Dictaphone app from the app menu. At the top of the screen you'll see a category switch. The default is "Dictaphone," but you're interested in the tab or the "Call Record" button.
This shows you a complete list of all conversations, sorted by date, and by clicking on a particular record, you can not only listen to it, but you can also perform various actions with the file.
- 🎧 High-quality audition.
- ✂️ Cutting off unnecessary parts of a conversation.
- 📤 Sending a file via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or instant messengers.
- 🗑️ Deletion of the confirmation record.
The advantage of this method is that you don't need to know the complex paths to files. MIUI takes this task on itself, providing convenient access to media content.
💡
The Dictophone app in MIUI is the central hub for managing all audio recordings, including conversations, even if they are technically stored in different locations.
In addition, you can quickly rename the file from this menu to make it easier to find in the future if you don’t trust the system’s automatic numbering.
Configure the recording and storage parameters
Before searching for files, make sure that the recording function is activated and configured correctly at all. In MIUI 12, settings can be lost after major system updates or region changes.
Open the Phone app and click on the three dots in the top right to call the menu. Select Settings, then look for Call Record. Here are the key switches.
Make sure the Call Record switch is active, and you can also choose to operate automatically, record all incoming and outgoing numbers, or record only selected numbers, which is an important point to save space.
| Parameter | Description of function | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic recording | Turns on a recording without confirmation | Enable for important contacts |
| Warning | Voice-over on the recording | Leave included (law requirement) |
| File format | Quality and type of compression | MP3 for compatibility |
| Warehouse | Place of preservation (memory/SD) | SD-spot-card |
The same menu often includes the option of selecting a save location. If your Xiaomi has a MicroSD card installed, you can redirect the data stream there to avoid clogging the internal memory.
⚠️ Warning: When recording conversations, be sure to alert the person you are talking to if required by your country's law. In some regions, using a hidden recording is criminally punishable.
Use of the SD-archival
Smartphone owners with memory card support can greatly enhance archiving capabilities. MIUI 12 allows for flexible management of save paths, which is critical when negotiating a large volume.
To transfer records to an external medium, you first need to insert a MicroSD card and format it as internal storage or portable storage, depending on the version of Android.
In the call recording settings, select the option "Save to" SD-After that, all new files will be automatically written to the external partition, freeing up gigabytes in the system.
If you've already accumulated a lot of files in internal memory, you can move them manually. Use a file manager, highlight the desired tracks in the folder. call_rec and select the “Move” or “Copy” function to the root SD-map.

Synchronization with the cloud Xiaomi and Google
Modern ecosystems offer convenient backup solutions that eliminate the risk of data loss when a smartphone breaks. MIUI 12 is tightly integrated with cloud services.
Xiaomi Cloud (or Galaxy Cloud depending on region and account) can synchronize settings and sometimes the voice recorder files themselves. Check the sync settings in the Mi Account menu.
Google One users can also access the device data backup option, but it’s worth considering that the audio files themselves, due to their size and privacy policies, are often not included in the standard backup package.
The most reliable way to store important files in the cloud is to manually upload important files to Google Drive, Yandex.Disk or Dropbox. Many file managers have a built-in “Send to the Cloud” feature.
Set up automatic folder loading call_rec to the selected cloud service, if this option is supported by the client application, this will create an additional layer of information security.
⚠️ Warning: Cloud storage has free space limits. Regular automatic download of heavy audio files can quickly exhaust your free fare.
Solving problems with missing files
Sometimes users are faced with a situation where the conversation seems to be going on, the recording indicator is on, but the file is nowhere.
The first thing to check is that there's space available, and if the internal memory is critically filled, the system may interrupt the writing process or not create the file at all, free up at least 500MB of space.
The second reason may be access restrictions: After updating MIUI 12, some applications may lose their storage permission. Go to Settings → Applications → Phone → Permissions and make sure that access to memory is allowed.
It’s also worth checking whether Do Not Disturb or Ignore All Calls mode is enabled, which in some configurations can block the voice recorder from running during a call.
What to do if the sound is missing from the recording?
If the problem persists, try clearing the cache of the Phone and Dictator apps, which won't delete your records, but will reset temporary software errors.
Secure removal and cleanup of archives
Sooner or later, the accumulated archive of conversations will require cleaning, and you need to delete files correctly, so as not to disrupt the system and not lose important data accidentally.
The best way to delete records is through the Dictator interface or in the call list, highlight unnecessary files, click on the Recycle Bin and confirm the action, which ensures that the file is deleted correctly.
When deleting through the file manager, be extremely careful. Accidental deletion of system files in the MIUI folder can lead to interface failures.
For mass cleaning, use the Cleanup feature in Xiaomi’s Security app, which can analyze old files and suggest removing those older than 30 days.
- 🗑️ Delete files through regular applications.
- 🗑️ Check the contents before mass removal.
- 🗑️ Use the Recycle Bin in the Cloud for Temporary Storage.
Regular audit of the archive not only frees up space, but also structures the data, allowing you to quickly find the necessary information in the future.
