Have you recorded an important conversation on a Xiaomi voice recorder but can't find the file? Or accidentally deleted the record and want to restore it? In smartphones running MIUI, the storage paths of audio often change depending on the firmware version and device model. In this article, we will examine all possible locations where Xiaomi can save records, from standard folders to hidden system directories.
Xiaomi uses its own Dictophone app (or Record in newer versions of MIUI), which behaves differently than third-party programs, such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro, where files are in one place, and the Xiaomi 13 Ultra files are in another, and if you used Google Drive or another cloud service to automatically sync, the records could fly to the network, we will tell you how to check all the options and not lose important data.
Standard ways to store records on Xiaomi
In most cases, Xiaomiβs Dictophone app saves files in an open folder of internal memory, depending on the version of MIUI:
- π MIUI 12 newer: /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/ β Here are the records.m4a or.mp3.
- π MIUI 11 older: /storage/emulated/0/Recorder/ β Classical location for old models (Redmi) 4X, Mi A1).
- π For models with Android One: /storage/emulated/0/Recordings/ (Like Mi. A2, Mi A3).
If you canβt see the MIUI or Recorder folder, check if the system files are hidden in your file manager.
- Open the Files app.
- Slip on three points in the upper right corner β βSettingsβ.
- Activate the βShow hidden filesβ switch.
Important: Some recordings can be automatically saved to the Mi Cloud cloud if synchronization is enabled in the voice recorder settings, and we will discuss this in the next section.
Cloud Storage: Where to Look for Records in Mi Cloud
Xiaomi smartphones by default offer to sync recordings with Mi Cloud, the company's cloud storage, and if you didn't turn this off, your audio files could be sent to the network.
- Open the Dictophone app (mic icon).
- Go to either the Cloud or the Mi Cloud (depending on the MIUI version).
- If there are records, they can be downloaded back to the device or listened to online.
If the Cloud section is missing, sync is disabled, and you can also check this in the Xiaomi account settings:
- Go to Settings β Xiaomi Account β Mi Cloud.
- Scroll to the Synchronization block and check if the Dictator item is turned on.
π‘
If you don't remember whether you've enabled cloud sync, try logging into Mi Cloud from your computer's browser, and the Dictator section can display all the stored records, even if they're not visible on your phone.
Note: files in Mi Cloud are only stored for 30 days after being deleted from the device, and then they are deleted irrevocably.
Hidden folders and system directories: where else can there be records
Sometimes Xiaomi saves the entries in non-obvious places, especially if youβve used:
- π§ Incognito mode in the recorder (records can lie in the /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/files/).
- π§ Third-party applications (e.g. Easy Voice Recorder or ASR Voice Recorder - They have their own folders).
- π§ Quick Recording function via notification panel (files sometimes get into the /storage/emulated/0/Download/).
To find all possible audio files on the device, use the search in βConductorβ:
- Open the Files app.
- In the search bar, type.m4a or.mp3.
- The system will show all audio files, including hidden ones.
How to recover deleted records?
| Type of record | Possible location | File format |
|---|---|---|
| Standard recording (Appendix "Dictophon") | /MIUI/sound_recorder/ | .m4a (AAC) |
| Incognito recording | /Android/data/com.miui.soundrecorder/files/ | .mp3 or.amr |
| Third-party applications (e.g. Easy Voice Recorder) | /Recordings/ or /Music/ | Depends on the application settings |
| Recordings via Google Assistant | /Android/data/com.google.android.apps.recorder/ | .opus or.mp3 |
How to transfer recordings from Xiaomi to your computer
If you need to copy the records on a PC, there are several ways:
- π₯οΈ Through USB-cable: connect your phone to your computer, select File Transfer mode, and copy the folder with the records (for example, MIUI/sound_recorder).
- βοΈ Through Mi Cloud: go to i.mi.com, log in and download records in the section "DictorphoneΒ».
- π² Po Po Po Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: Send files to your PC via βFast Transferβ (in MIUI There is a built-in βTransfer Filesβ function in the notification panel).
If the computer does not see the folder with records when connecting via USB, check:
- Is USB Debugging Mode enabled (Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version β 7 times tap β go back to Settings β Additional β For Developers)
- Does not block access to antivirus or firewall on the PC?
- Is firmware updated? MIUI (In older versions, there are bugs with MTP-protocol).
βοΈ Preparation for the transfer of records
β οΈ Note: If you use a Mac, you may need to install Android File Transfer (the official software from Google) to access Xiaomi files.
Problems with saving records: why files are lost
Sometimes users find that records are not saved or disappear.
- π« Disadvantage of space: if internal memory is full, the recorder may not save files or delete old ones automatically.
- π Application failure: If the Dictator crashed during recording, the file may not be saved or damaged.
- π΅ Mistake. SD-Cards: If you save records on a removable drive, check it for errors (via Settings) β Memory. β Verification SD-map).
- π Limitations MIUI: In some regional versions of the firmware, the recorder blocks the recording due to privacy policy (for example, Xiaomi for the European market).
To avoid data loss:
- Repair important records to your PC or cloud.
- Check the free space in the Settings β Memory section.
- Update the Dictator app via Google Play or the MIUI App Store.
π‘
If the records disappear after the MIUI update, try resetting the Dictator app settings (Settings β Apps β Recorder β Storage β Clear Data) and this will return the standard save paths.
Alternative methods of recording and storing audio
If the standard Xiaomi voice recorder does not suit you, consider alternatives:
- π€ Google Voice Recorder: Stores records in Google Drive and supports transcription (speech recognition: /Android/data/com.google.android.apps.recorder/files/.
- π± Easy Voice Recorder: allows you to select a save folder, format (.mp3,.wav,.flac) and bitrate.
- βοΈ Sending to messengers: you can record voice messages in Telegram or WhatsApp β they will be saved in chat and on the messenger servers.
Advantages of third-party applications:
| Annex | Pluses | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Google Dictator | Automatic transcription, cloud storage | Google Account Requires, No Advanced Recording Settings |
| Easy Voice Recorder | Support for high quality (up to 44.1 kHz), folder selection | Advertising in the free version |
| ASR Voice Recorder | Background recording, support for.wav and.flac | A complex interface for beginners |
β οΈ Note: When using third-party voice recorders, check the application permissions in Settings β Annexes β [Title of the programme] β Without access to the microphone and storage, the recording will not work.
