When you open a standard Gallery app on your Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco, and it’s empty or missing important shots, it’s a common problem that users of MIUI and HyperOS shells face. Most often, images are not physically gone, but simply stopped showing due to a failed indexing or privacy settings change.
Android on Chinese brand devices has its own features of working with multimedia. Sometimes after updating the firmware or cleaning the memory, the paths to the files change, and the standard viewer stops “seeing” the contents of the folders.
In this article, we will look at all the possible causes of the disappearance of photos and offer step-by-step solutions: you will learn to check hidden albums, clear the cache of a media scanner and recover data from the cart or cloud storage, the main thing is not to panic and consistently follow the instructions to return access to your memories.
Check basic display settings and filters
The first thing to do is to eliminate the common interface errors. Often users accidentally activate browsing filters or hide certain types of files. In the Gallery app, click the three dots in the upper right corner or swipe down to see the filter menu.
Make sure you don't check the box on "Hidden Albums" or "Recent." If you're sorting by date of addition rather than date of shooting, the order may be out of order. Also check if the "Video Only" or "Scream Only" mode that might have been activated by accident with a swipe is on.

To get into a hidden album, open the gallery, go to the Albums tab, and pull your finger from the bottom up in the center of the screen. This happens when the function "Storage Optimization" is enabled.

Cleaning the cache and resetting the media scanner settings
If the files are physically in memory (as seen through Explorer) but the gallery doesn't show them, the media database is damaged. Android uses Media Storage to index content, and a failure in this database causes new photos to fail and old ones to disappear from view.

There's a hidden folder in the Android file system called.thumbnails, which stores thumbnails of images for quick viewing. Sometimes because of file system errors, the originals can be lost, but the previews remain. Although this is not a complete solution, it confirms that the photos were once in the phone.
To see hidden folders, in Explorer, turn on the hidden files in the settings. Go to DCIM/.thumbnails. If there are files with strange names but high weight, maybe these are your cache photos. It's difficult to recover the original from them, but you can try to rename the extension.
Also check the lost.dir folder at the root of internal memory or at the SD-It's where the system drops files when the card is not extracted correctly or the power is suddenly turned off. JPG or PNG file.
It's important to know that a folder.thumbnails can grow to several gigabytes. If you lose space on your phone along with a photo, check its size - cleaning this folder is safe, thumbnails will be created again.
