Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone owners often experience important entries suddenly disappearing from the standard Notes app list, which causes panic, especially if the information was confidential or critical to the job. In fact, data rarely disappears without a trace; more often than not, it is moved to secure parts of the system or hidden due to the peculiarities of synchronizing the Mi Cloud account.
Understanding the logic behind MIUI or HyperOS helps you quickly locate a missing file. The system uses multiple layers of protection and data organization that can confuse an inexperienced user. In this article, we will take a closer look at all possible places where your records may be lost and provide step-by-step instructions for returning them.
The mechanism of the function "Hidden notes"
Xiaomi's note-hiding feature is not implemented as a simple deletion, but as a move of an object into an encrypted container. When you activate privacy mode, the system changes the attributes of the file, making it invisible to standard viewing in a gallery or note list without authorization. Data encryption occurs at the file system level, which provides a high level of security.
Access to this section requires a password confirmation for privacy protection, fingerprint or facial recognition if these methods are configured in the system. Without this procedure, the contents of the folder remain inaccessible, creating the illusion of complete disappearance of information.
β οΈ Note: If you reset your privacy protection settings or forget your password, access to hidden notes will not be possible even if you have root rights, as the encryption key is lost.
It is important to distinguish between hidden and deleted notes: in the first case, the file is physically located on the drive, in the second case, it is marked as free space. The mechanism of the hidden album and hidden notes is the same, so search should be conducted in the shared repositories of media and documents.
Search through File Manager and System Folders
The first place to look for missing data is the built-in file manager. Notes in MIUI are often not only stored in the application database, but can also be exported or cached as text files or images. To begin, open the Explorer or Files app.
You need to activate the hidden file display, and then go to the manager settings (usually a menu icon or three dots) and turn on the "Show hidden files" switch, and then you can see previously invisible directories in the root directory or in the MIUI folder.
Technical details of file location
Pay special attention to folders with a name that starts with a dot, for example.hidden_notes In Android, these names are hidden directories, if you use third-party file managers like Total Commander or the like. FX File Explorer, they can also have their own secure folders where data could have been moved.
Checking the basket and archive in the app Notes
Often users accidentally delete a note instead of hiding it, or confuse these actions. In modern versions of the shell from Xiaomi, deleted items do not disappear instantly, but fall into a special basket where they store a certain time.
To check this out, open the Notes app, go to the folder menu (usually a swipe to the right or a menu button) and find the Remote or Recycle Bin section, where all records deleted in the last 30 days are stored.
- π Open the Remote folder in the side menu of the application.
- β³ Check the date of removal β recovery is possible only within 30 days.
- β©οΈ Select the desired entry and click the "Restore" buttonΒ».
It's also worth checking the Archive folder. Some users archive old records to clear the main list, then forget their location. Archived notes aren't deleted, but are hidden from the All Notes tape.

Sync with Mi Cloud and Google Keep
One of the most common reasons for notes to βsyncβ is a sync conflict or login to another account, and if your device is synced to Mi Cloud, data can only be displayed if you have an Internet connection and the right profile.
Go to your phoneβs settings, select Account and Sync, and make sure thereβs an active switch opposite Notes. If sync was turned off and then enabled on the new device or after a reset, the old local records could have been replaced by data from the cloud that was empty at the time of the reset.
| Source of data | Where to find | Condition of access |
|---|---|---|
| Local storage. | On the device folder | Available without the internet |
| Mi Cloud | The "Mi Cloud" folder. | Sign-in to Mi Account is required |
| Google Keep | Separate annex | Google account required |
Also check if your entries have moved to the Google Keep app. When you initially set up your smartphone, Xiaomi often suggests importing notes from other sources, and they can automatically move to the Google ecosystem.
Second space and guest mode
MIUIβs unique feature, called Second Space, creates a completely isolated environment on the phone, similar to the second smartphone inside the first. If you accidentally switch to Second Space, all your apps, including Notes, will be empty, as itβs a separate user session.
To check this, look for the profile switch icon in the notification curtain or settings. Go to Settings β Second Space and select Switch to the main profile. Your missing notes may be there if the second space was created earlier.
π‘
Use different wallpapers for First and Second Space to visually distinguish them and not confuse where your data is located.
A similar situation can occur when the Guest mode is turned on, in which access to the owner's personal data is blocked, and make sure that the Guest profile is not active in the notification curtain.
Recovery from Mi Cloud backup
If files are not found in any of the above places, the option of recovering from a full backup remains. Xiaomi allows you to create system backups that include application data.
Go to settings, select About Phone β Backup and Restore. Check the date of the last successful copy. If it was made before the notes disappeared, you can try to recover the data. Importantly, recovery from (backup) replaces the current data on the phone with data from the archive.
β οΈ Warning: The recovery process from a full backup can take a long time and requires at least 50% battery charge.
To restore, select the file in the list, tick the item "Notes" and start the process. The phone will reboot, and the data will be returned in the state in which they were at the time of creation of the copy.
Prevention of data loss and security setting
To prevent the missing notes from happening again, it is recommended that you set up an automatic backup, which will take a few minutes, but will save important data in the future.
In the Notes app, go to the settings (three dots or gears) and find the option βSync with Mi Cloud.β Make sure itβs on. Itβs also helpful to periodically export important notes to text or image format and send them to your messenger or mail.
- π Change your privacy protection password regularly.
- βοΈ Check the synchronization status in the account settings.
- πΎ Make hand copies of important texts once a month.
Using cloud-based service parties like Evernote or Notion can also be a good alternative to a standard application, as they have a more transparent version history and are more securely synced across devices.

Regular sync with the cloud is the only guaranteed way to avoid losing data when a system crashes or a device is lost.
