Did you notice that your Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO memory melts like snow in the sun? Just 32 GB free, and a week later, it's a critical minimum and notifications "Not enough memory." And you didn't download anything! What's the matter?
The problem isnβt your forgetfulness, itβs the MIUI and Xiaomiβs smartphone architecture. Even if you donβt install new apps, the system continues to eat gigabytes of cache, duplicates, hidden update files, and aggressive backup policies. In this article, weβll look at the top 10 causes of memory loss on Xiaomi, from the obvious to the little-known, and give step-by-step instructions on how to recover precious gigabytes.
Spoiler: 80 percent of the time, it's not the users who are to blame, it's the firmware itself, but the good news is that almost everything can be fixed without being reset to factory settings.
1. App cache: why it takes gigabytes
The most obvious, but often ignored, reason is that cache is temporary files that apps create to make things faster -- like YouTube caches videos, Google Maps caches maps, and Telegram media files -- normally, the cache should be cleared automatically, but it doesn't work well on Xiaomi.
How to check? Go to Settings β Apps β App management, select any frequently used app (like Chrome or TikTok) and look at the Storage section. Chances are that the cache takes hundreds of megabytes, or even gigabytes, and it quickly accumulates again after cleaning.
- π§Ή How to clean: In the same menu, click "Clear the cache." For mass cleaning, use Settings β Warehouse β Cleanup β Β«Cash appΒ».
- βοΈ How to reduce: In some applications (for example, Google Photos) you can limit the cache in the settings.
- β οΈ What NOT to do: Do not clear the cache of system applications (e.g. com.miui.home) β this can cause crashes.
π‘
If the app gets slower after cleaning the cache, that's OK, and the cache will recover after a few runs, but at its optimum volume.
2.Duplicates of photos and videos: how MIUI creates them
One of the most insidious features of Xiaomi is the automatic duplication of media files, which is due to the operation of three services at once:
- MIUI Gallery β creates miniatures and previews.
- Google Photos syncs the originals to the cloud, but sometimes leaves copies.
- MIUI backup β duplicates files to the MIUI/Backup folder.
As a result, the same photo can be stored in 3-4 copies, taking up extra gigabytes, especially after updating the firmware or transferring data to a new phone.
Use the built-in tool in the Gallery β Albums β Duplicates
Check the DCIM/.thumbnails folder (hidden thumbnails)
Remove MIUI/Backup/AllBackup content
Disable autoreservation in Settings β Xiaomi Account β Backup

For deep cleaning, we recommend Files by Google, which can find duplicates even in hidden folders, but be careful: do not delete files from Android and MIUI folders manually, this can disrupt the system.
3. MIUI Updates: Why They 'Weigh' Like Full-Full Firmware
Every update MIUI β This is not a small patch, but almost full firmware weight. 1.5β3 GB: And after you install it, the old update files don't always get deleted automatically. They stay in the folder. /cache or /data/ota_package, preciously.
Worse, if an update is interrupted or installed with an error, the system can re-download it, doubling the space it occupies, especially for devices with 32 GB of memory, where every gigabyte counts.
| folder | What it keeps. | Can I remove it? |
|---|---|---|
| /cache | Temporary update files | Yes, but only through Recovery. |
| /data/ota_package | Downloaded OTA packages | Yes, manually or through Settings β Storage |
| /MIUI/Download | Downloaded firmware for manual installation | Yeah, unless you're planning a downgrade. |
To clear these files:
- Go to Settings β Storage β Cleanup β Updates files.
- Or use File Manager (root permissions are required to access /cache).
- For a full cleanup, boot to Recovery and select the Wipe Cache Partition.

4. preloaded apps and βjunkβ from MIUI
Xiaomi is known for its abundance of pre-installed apps, many of which cannot be removed by standard means, not only Mi Browser or Mi Video, but also dozens of system services like com.miui.analytics or com.xiaomi.midrop.
Worse, even if you donβt use these apps, they are:
- π₯ Automatically Update via Google Play.
- π Data is collected for analytics (yes, this takes place!).
- π Create a cache in the background.
How to fight:
- Disable: Settings β Applications β Application Management β Select Unnecessary β Disable.
- Remove (from root): Use ADB or Titanium Backup to uninstall system applications.
- Limit: In Settings β Special features β Install applications turn off auto-update for unnecessary programs.

5. Hidden Logging Files and Memory Dumps
If your Xiaomi ever βhangs,β overheats, or reboots, the system could create a memory dump β a snapshot of the deviceβs state at the time of a crash. These files weigh between 500MB and 2GB and are stored in the /data/tombstones or /data/log folder.
In addition, MIUI maintains detailed logs for almost all actions:
- π Logs of System Events (/data/log).
- π Logs of analytics (/data/data/com.miui.analytics).
- π Logs of search (/data/data/com.miui.search).
Normally, these files take up a bit of space, but if the system is unstable, they can grow to gigabytes, especially for devices with custom firmware or after unsuccessful updates.
β οΈ Note: Removing files from /data/log root-free can cause failures. Use only official cleaning tools in Settings β Warehouse.
To reduce the volume of logs:
- Turn off advanced diagnostics in Settings β About Phone β Debugging by USB β Disable Log Collection.
- Install SD Maid (requires root) for automatic cleaning.
- If the phone reboots frequently, check it for overheating or battery failure.
6. Backups and cloud synchronizations
Xiaomi aggressively reserves data β sometimes without you knowing it β and here are the main memory eaters:
- π Local backups: Created when you update MIUI or reset the settings. /MIUI/Backup/AllBackup and can weigh up 5β10 GB.
- βοΈ Xiaomi Cloud: Syncs photos, notes and contacts, but sometimes duplicates them locally.
- π± Mi Cloud Backup: Reservations SMS, call log and application settings.
How to control:
- Open Settings β Xiaomi Account β Mi Cloud β Backup and disable unnecessary options.
- Remove old backups to Settings β System β Backup.
- Check the /MIUI/Backup folder β it often has copies of it for several years!
If you are not using the Xiaomi cloud, it is better to disable sync altogether: Settings β Xiaomi Account β Sync β Turn off all switches.

Even if you haven't manually enabled backup, MIUI can create it automatically before critical updates.Always check the Backup folder after the firmware upgrade!
7 Viruses, Mining and Hidden Processes
If the memory disappears (tΓ i kuΓ i β βtoo fastβ), and you have not installed anything suspicious β it is possible that a hidden miner or spyware is working on the phone.
- π The battery goes down in a few hours.
- π The phone is warming up without loading.
- π B Settings β Battery visible unknown processes with high consumption.
Where to look:
- /data/data folder: Malware applications may be hiding here.
- Unknown APKs: Check Settings β Apps for suspicious programs.
- Hidden Administrators: Settings β Passwords and Security β Device Administrators.
How to treat:
- Install Malwarebytes or Dr.Web Light and scan the system.
- Check the rights of the superuser: Settings β Special features β Root rights (if any).
- In extreme cases, reset to factory settings (but save the data first!).
β οΈ Warning: Some Google Play "optimizers" are themselves the source of viruses. Use only proven high-rated antiviruses.
8. File system errors and fragmentation
Over time, the F2FS file system (used by most Xiaomi) can become fragmented, especially if the memory is 90%+ full.
- π’ Slowing down the phone.
- π Incorrect display of free space (the system βseesβ the memory, but can not use it).
- π Cluster loss (files take up space but do not appear in the explorer).
How to fix it:
- Restart your phone β sometimes it helps the system to recalculate the free space.
- Check the file system: adb shell df -h If the free space in the output command is very different from what MIUI shows - there is a problem.
- Defragment: To do this, format the /data partition (lose data!). Use TWRP or the official Fastboot.
If the problem recurs, the drive may be worn out (relevant to older devices). Check memory health with AIDA64.
