Owners of Xiaomi smartphones (including the Redmi, POCO and Mi series) sooner or later face a notification: βMemory is full.β Even if you have not installed new applications, the system continues to take up space due to cache, temporary files and background activity of MIUI. In this article, we will analyze all possible causes of memory overflow and give step-by-step instructions for cleaning β from simple methods to radical (reset to factory settings).
Xiaomiβs peculiarity is its aggressive use of internal storage for system needs. For example, MIUI updates can weigh up to 2-3 GB, and the cache of applications (especially messengers and social networks) can take up hundreds of megabytes per week. If you do not clean your smartphone regularly, even 64 GB of memory can run out in a few months. We tested all methods on Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 Pro and Xiaomi 13T models, the results are shown in the table below.
1.Why does Xiaomi memory fill up on its own?
The main βeatersβ of memory in Xiaomi smartphones:
- π± Application cache β temporary files that are created to speed up the operation of programs. For example, Telegram or TikTok can accumulate up to 1-2 GB of cache per month.
- π Updates MIUI β It downloads firmware in the background even if you haven't confirmed the installation. One service pack weighs 1.5-3 GB.
- ποΈ Garbage files β remnants of remote applications, error logs, photo and video thumbnails (folder.thumbnails).
- π΅ Media files in messengers β photos, gifs and videos from chats are automatically saved to the gallery.
- π¦ Duplicates and unnecessary APK β After updating applications, old versions often remain in memory.
Another feature of Xiaomi is the separation of memory into system and user memory. Even if the settings show that 5 GB is free, the system can block some of the memory for its needs. For example, on the Redmi Note 11 of 128 GB, only 112-115 GB is actually available.
β οΈ Note: If the memory is filled immediately after the reset (within 1-2 days), this may indicate a virus or malfunction. MIUI Optimization. In this case, only flashing through Fastboot will help.
2.How do you check what is taking up your memory?
Before you clean, you need to understand which files or applications are to blame.
- Open Settings β About Phone β Memory (or Settings β Storage in new versions of MIUI).
- Click on the memory usage graph β the system will show the distribution by categories: Applications, Images, Videos, Audio, Other.
- Tap on any category (such as Apps) to see a list of the most voracious programs.
For detailed analysis, use third-party utilities:
- π Files by Google β Shows unnecessary files, duplicates and large media.
- π SD Maid (requires root) β finds remnants of deleted applications and system debris.
- π οΈ CCleaner β Clears cache and temporary files (caution: can delete the necessary data!).
If the Other section is more than 5-10 GB, it is a sign of system debris, and it can only be removed through Recovery or reset.
3. Quick cleaning: removing cache and debris
The safest way to free up 1 to 5 GB of storage is to clear the cache of applications and temporary files, which wonβt delete your data, but can slow down some programs when you first run them.
Method 1: Clearing the cache of all applications
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner and select Sort by size.
- Open each major app (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) and click Clear Cache.
Method 2: Automatic cleaning through MIUI
MIUI 12-14 has a built-in garbage disposal tool:
- Open Security β Cleaning (Brush Icon).
- Press Deep Clean and wait for analysis.
- Select all items (except Downloads if there are important files) and click Clear.

After cleaning, restart the phone β this will help the system correctly recalculate the free space.
β οΈ Note: Do not clear the cache of system applications (for example, MIUI System or Google Services Framework. This can cause malfunctions in the smartphone.
4.Relieving memory by transferring files to SD-map
If you have a microSD slot in your smartphone, you can transfer some of the data to an external drive, but Xiaomi has limitations:
- π Applications can only be transferred to Adoptable Storage memory cards (i.e., the card becomes part of internal memory), which requires formatting and does not work on all models.
- π· Photos and videos are portable without problems, but some apps (such as Google Photos) may not see files on the site. SD.
- π΅ Music and documents are freely transferred, but when you extract the card files will become unavailable.
How to transfer files to SD?
- Insert a memory card (recommended class is UHS-I U3 for speed).
- Open Explorer (or Files by Google)
- Select files (photos, videos, music), click Move and select SD-map.
For the portability of applications:
- Go to Settings β Applications.
- Select an app (like Spotify or Netflix).
- Press Warehouse. β Change. β SD-map.
| Type of file | Can I transfer to SD? | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | β Yes. | Some apps donβt see files on the map |
| Music. | β Yes. | When the map is removed, tracks will disappear from playlists. |
| Annexes | β οΈ Partially. | Only on Adoptable Storage maps (not all models support) |
| Documents (PDF, DOC) | β Yes. | No restrictions. |
| Messages from messengers | β No. | Media from chat rooms can be transferred manually, but databases are not |

If you use the memory card as an internal storage, back up the data before formatting β all files on it will be erased!
5. Radical methods: reset to factory settings
If none of these methods worked, and the memory is still full, you'll have to reset it completely, and it will delete all the data, including apps, photos and settings, so first you have to:
- π Make a backup copy through Settings β Additionally. β Backup and reset.
- π± Save your contacts to your Google Account or export them to a.vcf file.
- π· Transfer photos and videos to your PC or cloud (Google Photos, Mi Cloud).
How do you reset?
There are two ways:
Method 1: Through settings (soft reset)
- Open Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Choose to erase all data.
- Enter your password (if installed) and confirm.
Method 2: Through Recovery (hard reset)
If the phone is not switched on or freezes:
- Turn off your smartphone.
- Press the Power button + Volume up until the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select Wipe Data β Wipe All Data.
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion.
β οΈ Note: On some models (POCO F3, Redmi K40) Reset via Recovery can cause the bootloader to lock.If the phone doesn't turn on after the reset, you'll need to unlock through the Mi Unlock Tool.
π‘
Factory reset is the last option if the memory is clogged with system debris or viruses, and after reset, the free space will return to its original state (minus MIUI updates).
6.How to prevent memory from being filled in the future?
To avoid recurring problems, follow these tips:
- π΅ Limit background activity: in Settings β Battery β Power saving mode disable auto-run of unnecessary applications.
- π« Ban auto-save media: WhatsApp, Telegram and VK Turn off automatic uploading of photos and videos.
- π Clean the cache regularly: use it MIUI Cleaner or Files by Google once in 1-2 weeks.
- π₯ Delete. APK After installation: installer files remain in the Download folder and take up space.
- π Monitor the updates: in Settings β The phone. β Update system disable automatic download firmware.
For advanced users:
- π οΈ Install Magisk and Universal Storage Switch module β it allows you to transfer applications to the Internet SD formatless.
- π¦ Use it. ADB for manual cleaning of system folders (for example, /data/log or /cache).

7. Frequent errors in Xiaomi memory cleanup
Many users make these mistakes in an attempt to make room:
- β Deleting the Android folder will cause applications to crash.
- β Cleaning up Google Play Services cache could disrupt Google services.
- β Formatting SD-card FAT32 For applications, you need a file system. ext4 or f2fs.
If the memory is filling up quickly after cleaning, check the phone for viruses using Malwarebytes or Dr.Web Light. Some Trojans create hidden files that take up gigabytes.
