Did you put a new memory card into a Xiaomi smartphone but he can't see it? Or, on the contrary, the phone has identified the drive, but applications can't write files to it, and photos are stored only in internal memory? These problems are familiar to many owners of Redmi, POCO or Mi devices. The fact is that Android on Xiaomi smartphones has its own nuances of working with external drives - from the limitations of MIUI to the peculiarities of formatting.

In this article, we will learn how to properly configure a memory card on Xiaomi of any generation – from the old Redmi Note 4X to the new Xiaomi 14 Ultra. 1. Which memory card to choose for Xiaomi: requirements and recommendations

Not all microSDs are equally useful. If you buy the first card you get, you run the risk of slow work, write errors, or even data loss. Xiaomi smartphones have specific requirements for external drives:

• 🔹 Speed class: minimum class 10 (UHS-I U1) video-recording HD. For 4K-I need a photo UHS-I U3 or V30/V60/V90.
• 🔹 Capacity: up to 2 TB (theoretically), but in practice it is better to take 128-512 GB - they are optimal for price and reliability.
• 🔹 File system format: exFAT (for cards) >32 GB) or FAT32 (map ≤32GB). NTFS unsupported!
• 🔹 Brand: avoid no-name cards. Best options - SanDisk Extreme, Samsung EVO Plus, Kingston Canvas Go!.

⚠️ Note: MicroSDXC cards (capacity) >32 GB) must be formatted in exFAT. If you insert such a card with FAT32, Xiaomi will offer to format it, otherwise it will work only for reading.

2. How to insert a memory card in Xiaomi: step-by-step instructions

It would seem that it could be easier? But even here there are pitfalls. For example, in some Xiaomi models, the tray for the game is not very simple. SIM-cards are combined with a microSD slot, and if you insert the memory card on the wrong side, it simply will not be determined.

Here's how to do it right:

1. Turn off your smartphone (required!) You can insert a card on the device on, but this increases the risk of damage to contacts.
2. Find a tray for SIM-maps -- usually on the top or side of the face. Put the paper clip in the hole and gently pull out the tray.
3. Place the card in a microSD slot (usually signed or marked in a different color) and make sure that the card contacts look down and the bevelled angle matches the shape of the slot.
4. Put the tray back in before you click. Turn on the phone.

⚠️ Note: If after inserting the card Xiaomi writes "Map" SD It's empty or it's an unsupported file system, and it needs to be formatted, but before you do that, make sure you copy all the data to your computer, and formatting will delete it forever!

3. Memory card formatting in Xiaomi: FAT32 vs exFAT

If your card is new or has been used on another device, you will need to format it. Xiaomi offers two options:

• 📱 As a portable storage card, the card will only be used for files (photos, videos, music) and applications cannot be installed on it.
• 📱 As an internal storage, the card will become part of the system (Adoptable Storage function), you can transfer applications to it, but the card will not be retrieved without resetting.

To format the map:

1. Go to Settings. → Warehouse.
2. Tap on the name of your card (for example, SD-map: 128GB).
3. Choose Format → As internal storage or as portable.
4. Confirm the action. It'll take 1-5 minutes.

If you need to write a file larger than 4GB (like 4K video) to a card, but Xiaomi stubbornly only offers FAT32, format the card in exFAT on your computer through the SD Formatter program (the official utility from the SD Association).

4. How to make a memory card internal storage (Adoptable Storage)

Adoptable Storage allows you to tie a memory card to your phone so that it becomes part of your internal memory, which is useful if you don't have much room for applications.

• ✅ Pluses: 🔹 You can install applications on the map. 🔹 Application data (cache, settings) are also transferred.
• ❌ Cons: 🔹 The card cannot be removed without resetting to factory settings. 🔹 Application speed may decrease (depending on the card class). 🔹 Not all applications support the transfer to SD.

To activate Adoptable Storage:

1. Put the card in the phone.
2. When the notice “New” appears SD-smack it.
3. Select Settings → Use as an internal storage.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen. The phone will suggest that you transfer the data (photo, video) to the map, you can opt out.
5. After formatting, go to Settings → Annexes → [Select the application] → Warehouse → Change. → SD-map.

⚠️ Warning: If you retrieve a card configured as internal storage, the phone will stop loading or will constantly give out errors. To return to service, you either need to insert the card back or reset the phone to factory settings.

Adoptable Storage is not available on all Xiaomi models, for example, Redmi 10A and POCO M3 do not have it due to CPU limitations. Check the support for the specifications of your model.

5 Why Xiaomi doesn’t see the memory card: Typical errors and solutions

If you insert a card, the phone doesn't recognize it, there are many reasons, from the usual contamination of contacts to serious hardware problems.

• 🔧 The map is not defined at all: 🔹 Check if the card is inserted correctly (contacts down!). 🔹 Clean the contacts of the card and slot in the phone with alcohol. 🔹 Try the card on another device (for example, on a computer via a card reader).
• 🔧 The map is defined but not formatted: 🔹 Format it on PC in exFAT via SD Formatter. 🔹 If the card is damaged, try to restore it using TestDisk (free utility).
• 🔧 The map works, but apps don’t see it: 🔹 Give permission to access the storage in the application settings. 🔹 If the card is an internal storage, transfer the application manually (see section 4).

If nothing works, check if the card slot is broken.

1. Put another obviously working card into the phone.
2. If you don't know, there's a problem with the slot.

If Xiaomi says “Map is corrupted” but it works fine on PC, try formatting it into FAT32 with a cluster size of 32 KB.

6 How to transfer applications and data to a memory card

Even if you format a map as an internal storage, the apps won't be automatically transferred to it. Here's how to do it manually:

1. Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
2. Select the app you want to migrate (such as WhatsApp or Spotify).
3. Slip the vault. → Change. → SD-map.
4. Wait for the data to be copied. Don't interrupt the process!

⚠️ Note: Not all applications support portability SD. For example, the Google Play Store, Mi Home and most system utilities remain in internal memory, PUBG Mobile or Genshin Impact can be slower from the card.

To transfer photos, videos and other files:

1. Open Files (standard MIUI application).
2. Select the files you want to move.
3. Press More. → Move it → SD-map.
4. Select your destination folder (for example, DCIM for photos).

7. How to safely remove a memory card from Xiaomi

If you use a card as a portable storage device, it can be retrieved at any time, but if it's configured as an internal storage device, you can't do that, the phone won't work!

To safely extract the card:

1. Open the Settings → Storage.
2. Slip the name of the card.
3. Click Extract (or Disable in older versions of MIUI).
4. Wait for the “Safe to Remove” notification and then remove the card.

If you want to completely remove the card as internal storage (for example, to paste it into another phone), do the following:

1. Back up all the data from the card (they will be deleted!).
2. Go to Settings. → Warehouse → SD-map → Settings (⋮) → Formatting as a portable.
3. Confirm action. The map will be formatted and disconnected from the system.

If you sell or give away a phone and it had a card as internal storage, make sure to format it as portable before the phone is reset to factory settings. Otherwise, the new owner will not be able to use the device!
