Why Contacts Disappear and Can They Be Recovered
Removing contacts on Xiaomi Redmi 9 is one of the most painful mistakes for the user, most often due to accidental clicking (โclean everythingโ in the contact menu), resetting to factory, virus attacks or MIUI failures. The good news is that in 80% of cases, data can be restored if you act quickly and correctly.
Xiaomi smartphones sync contacts with multiple sources: Google account, MI Cloud (Xiaomi Cloud), SIM-It's the card and the local memory of the device, and it depends on where your numbers were stored, how you recover them, for example, if the contacts were only linked to the device. SIM-The chances of returning them are minimal, unlike the data synchronized with the cloud.
In this article, we will look at all the current methods, from standard (through backups) to advanced (using ADB and third-party utilities).
Method 1: Recovery through MIUI backup
Xiaomi Redmi 9 automatically creates local backups of contacts if Backup is enabled in the settings.
- Open Settings โ About Phone โ Backup and Reset.
- Select Local Backups.
- Check the list of available backups โ look for the date when contacts were still in place.
If a suitable copy is found:
- ๐ฑ Press it. โ Restore.
- ๐ Select only the Contact point (so as not to overwrite other data).
- โ๏ธ Confirm recovery and restart the phone.
โ ๏ธ Attention: Local backups are stored in a folder /MIUI/backup/AllBackup If you reset your settings, these files could be deleted. Don't create new backups on top of the old ones, it will overwrite the data!

Method 2: Sync with your Google account
If your contacts were linked to a Google account, it takes no more than 5 minutes to recover them, and this method works even after you completely reset your phone.
- Open the Contacts app.
- Press three points (โฎ) โ Contact management โ Imports/Exports โ Re-establish contacts.
- Select the Google account that you synced with.
- Confirm the recovery and wait for the process to be completed.
If no contact is made:
- ๐ Go to Settings. โ Accounts. โ Google โ Synchronize and turn on the switch for Contacts.
- ๐ Check if your phone is connected to the internet (better via Wi-Fi).
- โณ Wait 10-15 minutes โ sometimes synchronization occurs with a delay.
A critical nuance: if you manually synced the blank list with Google after deleting contacts, the data in the cloud could be overwritten, in which case only restoration from the Google Contacts archive will help (see the next section).

Method 3: Google Contacts archive (if syncing doesn't work)
Google stores versions of contacts for the past 30 days, even if they were deleted, to restore them:
- Open your browser on your PC and go to contacts.google.com.
- In the left menu, select More โ Cancel the changes.
- Specify the date when the contacts were still in place (e.g., โ3 days agoโ).
- Click Confirm โ Changes will apply to all devices associated with your account.
| Action. | The result | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day rollback | Contacts deleted in the last 24 hours will return | It wonโt help if the removal has been done before. |
| 7-day rollback | Recovery of most lost data | Old numbers may return |
| 30 days rollback | Maximum coverage of remote contacts | All changes in a month (including irrelevant ones) will return. |
โ ๏ธ Note: If you used multiple Google accounts on Redmi 9, check each account's archive).

Before you restore, export your current contacts to the CSV file via Settings โ Export to Google Contacts. This will help undo changes if something goes wrong.
Method 4: Recovery via MI Cloud (Xiaomi Cloud)
MI Cloud is Xiaomi's proprietary cloud storage that automatically saves contacts if synchronization is enabled.
- Go to Settings โ Accounts โ MI Cloud.
- Make sure you are logged in with the same account you used before you were deleted.
- Select Contacts โ Synchronize.
- If contacts do not appear, click Restore Data and select the latest backup.
Features of MI Cloud:
- ๐ Data is stored in the cloud for 6 months after deletion (as opposed to 30 days for Google).
- ๐ฑ Synchronization works only with an active Internet connection.
- ๐ If you have changed your phone, link the new Redmi 9 to the same account. MI.
If MI Cloud is not helpful, check:
- ๐ Whether synchronization was enabled before deletion (check in Settings) โ MI Cloud โ History of synchronization).
- ๐ง Are there any traffic restrictions (sometimes synchronization is turned off when roaming).
What if MI Cloud asks for SMS confirmation and the number is lost?
Method 5: Deep scanning programs (without root)
If standard methods donโt work, you can use third-party utilities that scan the phoneโs internal memory.
- ๐ ๏ธ DiskDigger (free version only searches for photos, but paid supports contacts).
- ๐ GT Recovery (requires the phone to connect to a PC).
- ๐ฑ Undeleter Recover Files & Data (without root, but with limitations).
Instructions for DiskDigger (on the example of Android):
- Install the app from Google Play.
- Start a full scan (may take 1-2 hours).
- Once completed, select Contacts from the list of found files.
- Mark the numbers you need and click Restore (save to) VCF-file).
โ ๏ธ Attention: Recovery applications only work if new information is not written to the deleted data site. The less you use your phone after deleting, the better the chances of success. Don't install programs on internal memory, use it. SD-map!

Without root rights, software will only restore contacts that were not overwritten by the new data, and deep scanning (including system files) will require superuser rights.
Method 6: ADB-Teams for experienced users
If you are ready to work with Android Debug Bridge (ADB), You can try to extract contacts directly from the database. contacts2.db. This method requires command line skills and USB-debugging.
Step-by-step:
- Enable Developer Mode on Redmi 9: Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version (click 7 times).
- Activate. USB-debugging โ Additionally. โ For developers.
- Connect your phone to your PC and install ADB Tools.
- Execute commands in the terminal: adb devices adb shell su cp /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db /sdcard/ exit exit adb pull /sdcard/contacts2.db C:\contacts_backup\
- Open the contacts2.db file with SQLite Browser and export the data to CSV.
Limitations of the method:
- ๐ Root rights are required (on Redmi 9, obtaining them may result in loss of warranty).
- ๐ If the database has been cleaned, recovery is not possible.
- ๐ป Minimal knowledge is required. SQL base-work.

What to do if nothing helps
If all of these methods fail, the last options remain:
- ๐ Contact the operator: some mobile operators (for example, MTS or Beeline) store a history of calls for the last 3-6 months. SIM-map.
- ๐ง Xiaomi Service Center: If the deletion occurred due to a firmware failure, specialists can extract data using professional tools (paid).
- ๐พ Checking other devices: contacts may have synced with another phone, tablet or laptop (check Outlook, Skype, Viber).
If contacts were critical (such as customer work numbers), consider using paid services like Ontrack or Stellar Data Recovery, which work with the deviceโs physical memory and can recover data even after flashing.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Avoid "magic" programs that promise recovery in 1 click (such as "Super Backup & Restore"). Often they contain malicious code or simply repackage standard Android features. Check reviews and rankings on Google Play before installing.
