Accidentally removing important photos, contacts or documents from a Xiaomi smartphone is a stressful situation that many users are familiar with. However, it is too early to panic: modern Android file system and cloud services often leave “digital traces” to return lost information. The effectiveness of recovery depends on the speed of the device owner’s response and the availability of backups.
In this article, we will take a look at all the available ways to reanimate data, from the built-in tools of the Mi Cloud ecosystem to specialized software for PCs. You will learn how to properly configure your smartphone to maximize protection against file loss in the future and what actions you should absolutely not take immediately after the discovery of a missing person.
First steps to detect file loss
The moment you realize that files are gone is critical: Stop using your smartphone immediately. Any new action — installing an app, receiving a call, or saving a new photo — can lead to the rewriting of the memory sectors where deleted data was physically stored, and if the data is overwritten with new ones, it becomes almost impossible to restore it even for professionals.
If you have the option, turn on In-Air mode, which blocks incoming messages, notifications and background synchronization that can take up space in memory. Android works on the principle that a deleted file does not disappear instantly, only an area that can be occupied by new data is marked, and your task is to keep this area intact.
⚠️ Warning: Don't try to download heavy recovery software directly to your phone right away, this can destroy your chances of a successful data return.
Check for a recent backup. Often users forget that they have automatic sync enabled with Google Photos or Xiaomi Cloud. A quick look at cloud storage can save hours of trying to deep scan the device's memory.
Recovery through the built-in Recycle Bin in Gallery and Files
The simplest and often ignored method is to check the standard Recycle Bin. The MIUI shell and modern versions of Android have a built-in clipboard for deleted media files, and when you delete a photo or video, they are not permanently erased, but moved to a special hidden partition where they are stored for 30 days.
To access this section, open the Gallery app and go to the Albums tab. Scroll down to the end, where you'll find the Deleted folder, where you can select the images you want and click Restore. A similar mechanism works in the standard Files Explorer for documents and audio.
- 📁 Open the Gallery app on the home screen.
- 📂 Go to the tab "Albums" and scroll to the bottom.
- 🗑️ Select the folder “Removed” (or “Recently deleted»).
- ✅ Click “Select”, mark the desired files and confirm the recovery.
It is important to understand that this method only works for standard applications of the system. If you used a third-party file manager to delete files, the files can bypass the system basket. Also, the storage period in the basket is limited, and after 30 days, the cleanup is automatically carried out.
💡
If you deleted a file through the Recycle Bin in the Gallery, it may still be in the Mi Cloud if sync was enabled.
Use of Mi Cloud and Google Drive
Xiaomi's ecosystem offers a powerful backup tool, the Mi Cloud. If your device had Mi Account activated and synced, your contacts, messages, notes and photos could be saved automatically, and this is one of the most reliable ways to return data without using a computer.
To check, log into i.mi.com from your computer or other device using your login and password. In the cloud interface, select Gallery or Contacts, and you can see all synchronized data, even if it was deleted from your phone after the last sync, but before clearing the cloud.
| Type of data | Where to look for Mi Cloud | Remote storage period |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Section "Gallery" | Up to 30 days in the cloud basket |
| Contacts | Section “Contacts” | Indefinite (if there is a copy) |
| Messages (SMS) | Section “Communications” | Until the next full discharge |
| Notes | Notes appendix | Up to 30 days in the basket |
Google works the same way, either by going to photos.google.com or drive.google.com. In the Library -> Recycle Bin, you can often find files that have been deleted from your phone but have not yet been deleted from your cloud account. Google Photos stores deleted items for 60 days, which gives you more time to recover.
What to do if the synchronization is turned off?
Recovery of data from local MIUI backup
Xiaomi smartphones have a unique feature to create local backups of the entire system or its individual parts. This feature does not require the Internet and saves data in internal memory or on the Internet. SD-If you've previously set up automatic backups or done it manually, the return process will take a few minutes.
To check for a copy, go to the settings menu. The path may vary slightly depending on the version of MIUI, but it usually looks like: Settings → About Phone → Backup and Restore. Here you can see a list of all available restore points, with dates and sizes.
☑️ Checking for local backup availability
When recovering from a local copy, be careful: the system may suggest replacing the current data with data from the archive, which means that new files created after the backup date may be lost, and it is recommended to copy important new data to the computer first, and then perform a rollback procedure.
⚠️ Attention: Local backup takes up a lot of space. MIUI/backup, It could have been removed by the system when there was a shortage of space.
Using third-party software for deep scanning
When the built-in tools are powerless, specialized PC software comes to the rescue, tools like Dr.Fone, DiskDigger (a debugging version of the PC), or Tenorshare UltData are able to conduct deep memory scans, looking for residual fragments of files that have not yet been overwritten by new information.
To work with most of these programs, you need to enable USB Debugging on your smartphone. This feature is in the hidden “Developers” menu. To activate it, you need to quickly click on the build number in the “About Phone” section 7 times. Once the corresponding notification appears, go to the advanced settings and turn on the “Debug by USB” slider.
The path to the developer menu:
Settings → About phone → (7 times tap on "Version MIUI") →
Settings → Additional settings → For developers → Debugging by USBConnect your phone to your computer via the original cable and run the scan in the program. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours. The recovery efficiency depends on how much the phone has been used after deleting files. The less you write new data, the higher the chance of success.
- 💻 Install proven recovery software on your computer (Windows/Mac).
- 🔌 Connect your smartphone with a cable and allow access on the device screen.
- 🔍 Start a deep scan (Deep Scan) in the program.
- 💾 Select the files found and save them to your PC hard drive.
💡
Third-party programs don’t guarantee 100% results, especially on modern Android with encryption, but this is the last chance to return data without going to the service center.
