Accidental deletion of important images is a stressful situation that almost every smartphone owner has faced. In a rush, we often swipe the gallery without noticing how the delete button hits the finger, or clear the device's memory, believing that old files are no longer needed. Fortunately, the Android operating system and the MIUI shell (or HyperOS) are designed with human factors in mind, providing multiple layers of data protection. Before panicking or looking for paid recovery services, it's worth checking the built-in backup mechanisms that often operate in the backgrounds without the user's knowledge.
The process of returning lost files depends on how long ago they were erased and what sync settings were active on your device at that time. If you use a Google or Xiaomi Account, the probability of success is one hundred percent, since cloud services save copies automatically. However, even in the absence of cloud copies, there are methods to find traces of deleted information in system caches or temporary storage. In this article, we will discuss all the available methods, from the simplest to more complex technical solutions.
Check the built-in basket in the Gallery
The first and most obvious place to look is the Recycle Bin or Recently Deleted System folder, which has become standard in modern versions of MIUI and HyperOS shells, allowing you to store deleted media files for 30 days (sometimes up to 60 days depending on the region and version of the software), and the files are not fully stored in the main memory, but only marked as deleted, remaining accessible for recovery with a single touch.
To get into this section, open the standard Gallery app and go to the Albums tab. Scroll down to the very end, and you'll see a folder with the appropriate name. If you've recently deleted a photo, it'll be here. Please note that once the storage period expires, files are permanently deleted, so you don't have to wait to check.
⚠️ Note: The file storage period in the recycle bin is limited, and after 30 days, the system automatically clears this partition, and it will no longer be possible to return data using standard methods.
In some cases, users may not find this folder if it has been hidden or deleted before, and it is also worth remembering that cleaning the basket through the file manager can lead to the loss of access to these files even before the deadline. If a photo is found, just highlight it and click the Recover button.
- 📂 Open the Gallery app and go to the Albums section.
- 🗑️ Find the “Recently Deleted” folder at the bottom of the list.
- 📅 Check the Deletion Date – Files are stored for up to 30 days.
- ↩️ Select the desired pictures and click "Restore».
⚠️ Note: If you used the “Clear Recycle Bin” function in the storage settings, the files will be permanently destroyed and this recovery method will become unavailable.
It's important to understand that the cart is just a temporary buffer, not designed to store long-term backups, but to protect against accidental errors, and check its contents regularly, especially if you're actively working with graphics or often take screenshots, which you delete.
☑️ Checking the basket
Recovery through Mi Cloud
Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphone owners have the unique advantage of deep integration with their own Mi Cloud service. If your device has a Mi Account enabled and gallery synchronization activated, all your pictures are automatically copied to the company’s servers, which is one of the most reliable ways, since data is stored regardless of the physical state of the smartphone carrier.
To check for a backup, you don't have to have your phone on hand. Any device with Internet access is enough. Go to i.mi.com and log in using your credentials. The web interface allows you not only to view photos, but also to manage the "Recently Deleted" album, which syncs with your phone.
If you see your lost photos on the site, you're lucky. You can download them directly to your computer or re-sync them on your smartphone. Sometimes it happens that the phone has deleted the photo but it's still stored in the cloud, or vice versa, the photo is deleted in the cloud but left in the local shopping cart of the phone.
- ☁️ Go to i.mi.com from any browser.
- 🔑 Sign in to your Mi Account (the same one on your phone).
- 🖼️ Open the Gallery section and check for files.
- 📥 Download the necessary pictures or enable synchronization.
What to do if the synchronization is turned off?
It is worth noting that free space in the Mi Cloud is limited (usually 5 GB), so old photos could be replaced by new ones if you did not buy an additional subscription, in which case it is worth checking the archival data or paid subscription, if it was ever issued.
Use Google Photos and other clouds
Many Android users are unaware that their photos are already saved in the Google Photos ecosystem. The Google Photos app is often installed by default and has its own backup mechanism independent of the Mi Cloud.Even if you deleted a picture from the Xiaomi gallery, a copy of it can stay in the Google cloud for up to 60 days in the shopping cart or in the main archive.
Open the Google Photos app or go to photos.google.com. In the menu on the left (or in the bottom panel on the mobile device), find the Library and then the Recycle Bin. The algorithm here is similar to the MIUI system basket, but storage times may differ. Moreover, Google sometimes saves thumbnails or compressed versions of the photo even after the main storage period has expired if the “Savings of space” function was enabled.
In addition to Google and Xiaomi products, check out other services you have installed: Dropbox, OneDrive, Yandex.Disk. Often users install these apps for booting with the camera, forget about them, and then find their lost files there, which is especially true if you have ever changed your smartphone and transferred data through these services.
⚠️ Note: Google Photos can automatically compress the quality of uploaded photos to save space. When you restore, make sure that the version of the file suits you, or check the settings of the original quality.
If none of the clouds have a photo, it doesn't mean that the situation is hopeless, but the chances of success are reduced, so we move on to more sophisticated methods related to analyzing the file system.
- 🔍 Check the cart in the Google Photos app.
- 💾 Go to the archive and the “On Device” folder inside the application.
- 🌐 Check the third-party clouds (Yandex, Dropbox, OneDrive).
- ⚙️ Make sure that autoboot has been enabled in the app settings.
Analysis of hidden folders and messenger cache
Often, the deleted photo is not actually erased, but simply lost in the system debris or moved. Messengers like Telegram, WhatsApp and Viber have a habit of saving the received and sent media files to their own folders, even if you have cleaned the chat.
To find these files, use the built-in File Manager Explorer (or download a more advanced one, such as FX File Explorer). You need to search by the paths containing application names. For example, in Telegram, photos are often located in the folder Android/media/org.telegram.messenger/Telegram. WhatsApp structure can be more complicated due to encryption, but media files are often duplicated in a shared gallery or a Media folder.
And you should also look at the.thumbnails folder inside the DCIM directory, which stores thumbnails of your photos. It's not the high-resolution original, of course, but if you need to urgently remember what was in the photo, or restore visual information, this method can save the situation. These files are much smaller, and they often stay in the system even after the original is deleted.
| Annex/Service | Path to folder (example) | Type of data stored |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram | Android/media/org.telegram.messenger | Photos, videos, documents |
| Android/media/com.whatsapp | Chat media | |
| Viber | Android/media/com.viber.voip | Images and stickers |
| Android/data/com.instagram.android | Cash and drafts |
💡
Use the File Search feature in Explorer, sorting them by date of change, to help you find recently deleted or moved files that are lost in the back of the folders.
Using computer programs to restore
If the software methods inside the smartphone didn’t work, the final frontier is PC-specific software, such as DiskDigger, Dr.Fone, Recuva (for memory cards), or EaseUS MobiSaver, which is based on finding tails of files that haven’t been physically overwritten by new data.
Root rights are often required to operate on a smartphone; without them, programs can scan only cache and thumbnails, but not full versions of files. Getting Root rights on modern Xiaomi is a complex procedure that requires unlocking the bootloader, which can lead to loss of warranty and reset of all data (Wipe).
If you do that, the algorithm is this: install the program on your PC, connect your phone to USB in debugging mode, start the scanning process, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours, and it's important that you don't use your phone at this point, so you don't start writing new data over the remote ones.
- 💻 Install a proven recovery program on your computer.
- 🔌 Connect your smartphone through the original USB-cable.
- 🛠️ Activate the debugging mode on USB developer-setting.
- 🚀 Run a deep scan and wait for the results.
Risks of using recovery programs
The effectiveness of this method depends on the time elapsed since the deletion, and the more you use your phone after losing a photo, the less likely you are to succeed, since the new data occupies the vacant memory cells.
Prevention and setting up of auto-saving
The best way to combat data loss is to back it up in a timely manner, so that the "how to recover deleted photos" situation never happens again, set up automatic synchronization right now, which will take a couple of minutes, but will save thousands of nerve cells in the future.
In the Xiaomi Gallery settings, enable sync with Mi Cloud. In the Google Photo settings, make sure that the check box is “Support and sync.” Also, it is good practice to periodically copy important archives to your computer or external hard drive. Do not store all eggs in one basket, especially if it is your smartphone basket.
💡
Automatic synchronization to two different clouds (e.g. Mi Cloud + Google Photos) ensures that data is kept safe even when the device is completely damaged or lost.
Check your vacant cloud storage space regularly. If the space runs out, the sync stops and new photos stop being saved. Many services offer low-cost rates that are worth sleeping well knowing your memories are safe.
