Users of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones often face a situation where important images suddenly disappear from public access or hide in the bowels of the system. This can happen after accidentally pressing, crashing the MIUI or HyperOS shell, as well as cleaning the cache.
Before we start to actively search, we need to understand where the file might have gone. There are several layers of hiding in the Xiaomi ecosystem, from the standard Recycle Bin folder to password-protected albums and cloud services, and data recovery depends on how it was hidden or deleted.
In this article, we will look at all possible scenarios for photos to disappear, how to find images in system directories, how to use the built-in gallery tools, and what to do if files were deleted irrevocably from the user's point of view, and we will look at the methods that are relevant to modern firmware versions so that you can quickly regain access to your memories.
Search in the Hidden Album and Gallery Cart
The most obvious but often overlooked step is to check the standard tools of the Gallery itself. The MIUI shell offers convenient features for temporarily removing or hiding content from prying eyes. If you accidentally hid photos or deleted them recently, they are not gone anywhere, but simply moved to special system sections.
To start, open the Gallery app and go to the Albums tab. Scroll down to the bottom. There you will find Deleted. This folder stores files that you deleted but didn't clean completely. They're usually there for 30 days, after which the system erases them forever.
If the photos were intentionally hidden, they are in "Hidden Album," and to get there, you have to go to the "Albums" section and pull your finger down the album list (swipe from top to bottom) until you have a password or fingerprint request, and once you unlock, you'll see all the hidden images.
β οΈ Note: If you forgot the password from the Hidden Album and did not link the Mi Account to restore it, it will be impossible to return access to these files using standard methods.
To return a photo from a cart or hidden album to the public, do the following:
- π Open the folder "Deleted" or "Hidden albumΒ».
- π±οΈ Press and hold your finger on the right shot to highlight.
- β©οΈ Click the βRestoreβ or βRemove from Hiddenβ buttonsΒ».
After that, the images will instantly return to the main feed "Photos", if these sections are empty, then the files have been permanently deleted or hidden in another way, for example, through a file manager.
Use of the Mi Cloud cloud service
Xiaomi smartphone owners often neglect to set up the Mi Cloud service, and it is a powerful tool that not only backs up, but also syncs deleted files. If your device was enabled to sync Gallery, even after completely deleting from the phone photos can be saved on the server.
There are two ways to check for images in the cloud. One is through your phone settings. Go to Settings β Mi Account β Mi Cloud β Gallery. You can see sync status and data management. The second way is more reliable and informative is through the web version of the service.
Go to i.mi.com from your computer or other device. Sign in to your Mi Account. Select Gallery. This shows all the photos that have ever been uploaded to the cloud. Even if you cleared the gallery on your phone, there can be a copy in the cloud.
To recover via the web interface:
- βοΈ Sign in to i.mi.com.
- πΌοΈ Open the Gallery section and find the right picture.
- β¬οΈ Select a photo and click the βDownloadβ button to save to the device.
Itβs also worth checking the βDeletedβ section directly in the cloudβs web interface, and the logic is the same as on your phone: deleted files are stored there for a certain period of time before final erasure.
π‘
Turn on the Memory Cleanup feature in the Mi Cloud settings. It automatically deletes photos from your phone that are already uploaded to the cloud, freeing up space but leaving the pictures available for viewing over the network.
Analysis of system folders through the Explorer
Sometimes photos are not deleted, but simply βlostβ due to a failure in indexing media files. The gallery stops seeing images, although they are physically stored in memory, in which case manual search through the standard Explorer application (Files) will help.
The Android file system stores the camera shots in a strictly defined directory. Open Explorer and go along the path: Internal Memory β DCIM β Camera. This is where all your photos taken on the main camera should lie. If you see the files here but they are not in the gallery, the problem is the media scanner cache.
Screenshots are also worth checking the folders of screenshots and downloads. Screenshots are in DCIM β Screenshots or Pictures β Screenshots, and downloaded files from instant messengers often end up in MIUI β Gallery β Cloud or Download.
If there are no DCIM files in the folder, try sorting them by the date of the change, and they may have been moved to another directory by some editor application.
What if the DCIM folder is empty and you need a photo?
For forced updating of the gallery, you can use the following method:
- π Find the root of memory of any file with the extension.nomedia.
- ποΈ Delete it (if it is in the photo folder) as this file prohibits scanning.
- π Restart the device to restart the media service.
Recovery from Local Backups
Xiaomi phones have a built-in local backup feature that many forget. The system can automatically create copies of data, including photos, if you previously activated this option. Local backups are stored in a hidden folder and take up space in memory.
To check for backup, go to Settings β About Phone β Backup (in some versions of MIUI, the path: Settings β Advanced Settings β Backup). Here you will see a list of available backups with their creation dates.
If you find a backup created before the photo disappears, you can start the recovery process. Please note that the recovery will affect not only the photo, but also the other data contained in this backup (contacts, SMS, application settings), if you do not choose selective recovery.
| Type of data | Where the backup is kept | Is it possible to selectively restore |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Internal memory / MIUI / backup | Yes. |
| Contacts and SMS | Internal memory / MIUI / backup | Yes. |
| System settings | Internal memory / MIUI / backup | No (full rollback) |
| Application data | Depends on the app. | Partially. |
β οΈ Attention: The recovery process from the local backup can take a long time.Do not turn off the screen or interrupt the process, otherwise you can damage the system database.
Third-party programs for data recovery
If built-in techniques don't work, you have to turn to "heavy artillery," specialized data recovery software that scans your phone's memory for residual records, but you have to understand that today's smartphones use encryption, and the chances of success depend on a lot of factors.
One of the popular programs is DiskDigger, which requires root rights to work properly, but in normal mode it can find thumbnails of deleted photos. Another option is Dr.Fone or Tenorshare UltData, which work through a USB connection and debugging mode.
Such programmes require:
- π» Install the program on your computer (Windows or Mac).
- π Connect the phone with a cable and allow debugging USB.
- π Run a deep scan of the device memory.
The effectiveness of these methods drops dramatically if you use your phone, shoot new videos or install apps after you delete a photo, and the new data overwrites the old memory sectors, making recovery impossible.
βοΈ Preparation for data recovery
Prevention of photo loss
In order to avoid the problem of finding hidden or deleted photos in the future, it is better to set up the correct storage system in advance. Relying only on the internal memory of the smartphone is risky, since any firmware failure or physical failure can lead to data loss.
Set up automatic sync with Google Photos. This is a service that is pre-installed on most Android smartphones, which allows you to store photos in original quality (by merging space in Google Drive) or in space saving mode (unlimited, but with compression).
It is also recommended to regularly, at least once a month, upload important photos to your computer or external hard drive. Use a USB 3.0 cable to quickly transfer large amounts of data.
π‘
The most reliable way to protect a photo is the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of data, on two different media, one of which is stored separately (in the cloud or elsewhere).
Another important tip is to avoid installing questionable cleaner and accelerator apps, which often aggressively delete files as βjunk,β and can clear the messenger cache folders where important images are stored.
