Losing a smartphone is stressful, especially if it has important photos, work documents or contacts stored on it. Xiaomi owners have the advantage of integrating several tools for backup and data recovery. However, even without prior setup, the chances of returning information remain. In this article, we will examine all the available methods, from standard Mi Cloud features to little-known techniques using ADB and third-party utilities.
It's important to understand that success depends on three factors: whether sync was enabled, whether there is physical access to the device (if it is found but blocked), and how quickly you started acting. For example, data from Mi Cloud is stored 30 days after deleting the device from your account, and recovery through Google Photos is possible only with active sync, and we structured instructions by priority from the simplest and fastest to complex technical solutions.
Recovery via Mi Cloud: The Official Way From Xiaomi
Mi Cloud is Xiaomiβs cloud storage that automatically stores contacts, notes, photos, and even call records (if activated), and you only need access to the Mi Account account linked to the lost phone to use it.
How do you check if sync is enabled? Even if you don't remember, try logging into Mi Cloud from another device:
- Go to i.mi.com.
- Enter the username and password from your Mi Account.
- In the Devices section, check if the lost phone is displayed. If so, the data is likely saved.
- π What data can be restored: contacts, SMS, Notes, photos (if autoload was enabled), call history.
- β³ Storage period: 30 days from the moment of deleting the device from the account or resetting settings.
- π Limit: Free storage available only 5GB (unless you bought the extension).
β οΈ Note: If you donβt remember the Mi Account password, you can only restore it through the attached email or phone number. Xiaomi does not provide support for restoring access without this data β even if you have a check to buy.
Try unlocking via Mi Account (if Find Device is enabled)|
Connect to a PC and verify access via ADB (developer rights required)|
Contact Xiaomi Service Center with Proof of Ownership (check)|
Use Fastboot mode to reset (delete all data!)-->
2. Google services: restore contacts, photos and applications
Even if the Mi Cloud was disabled, it is likely that the data was synchronized with Google services, and most Xiaomi users are logged in to Google Account by default, which opens up access to:
- π Contacts: automatically saved to Google Contacts. Check Archive section - there may be older versions.
- π· Photos and Videos: If backup is enabled in Google Photos, all media files are available in original quality (or compressed if you choose to save space).
- π± Apps and settings: a list of installed programs can be seen on Google Play β Library.
How to check the synchronization:
- Open the Google Account Management page.
- Go to Data and Personalization section β Data management.
- Scroll to the Device Sync block β there will be a list of phones and the date of the last sync.
| Type of data | Recovery Service | Maximum storage period | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contacts | Google Contacts | No restrictions. | Only when the synchronization is on |
| Photo/video | Google Photo | No restrictions (unless manually removed) | Original quality takes its place in the cloud |
| SMS | Google Drive (backup copy) | 60 days | Requires manual creation of backup |
| Notes | Google Keep/Mi Notes (if synced) | 30β90 days | Depends on the app. |
Never do |
Once a month |
Only before the firmware update |

3. Search for the phone through "Find the device" and remote lock
If the phone is not just lost but stolen, the first thing you need to do is to remotely lock it and try to track its location.
- Mi Find Device (Mi Cloud feature built-in): Go to i.mi.com β Find the device. The map will show the last known location (if the phone is on and connected to the Internet). You can turn on Lost Mode, which will lock the phone and display your contact number on the lock screen.
- Google Find My Device: Works even if Mi Cloud is disabled, but requires an active Google Account. Go to google.com/android/find. You can lock the device, erase data or play back sound (if the phone is nearby).
Critical information: if the phone is turned off or discharged, its location is impossible to determine, but once it connects to the network, you will receive a notification. SIM-card, so the Call or Message functions may not work.
β οΈ Note: If you decide to delete data remotely (Clean your device in Find My Device), it will not be possible to restore it later - even through the Mi Cloud!
4.Recovery of data from a physical device (if the phone is found)
If you've managed to get your phone back but it's locked or it's not turning on, there are a number of ways to extract the data, and it's important that any manipulation of the firmware or reset causes you to lose unsaved data.
- π Connect to PC in file transfer mode: If the phone is turned on but locked, connect it to your computer via USB. Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro, POCO X3) When you connect, a charge notification appears through USB β tap on it and select File Transfer (MTP). You can copy photos and documents without unlocking them.
- π οΈ Use of the ADB (Android Debug Bridge: If the phone was enabled Developer Mode and Debugging USB, You can try extracting data from the command line. Connect the phone to the PC, open the terminal, and type in: adb pull. /sdcard/ C:\XiaomiBackup\ This command will copy all files from internal memory to disk. C:\ in the XiaomiBackup folder.
If the phone doesn't turn on or requires a password to connect to the PC, it's only a Fastboot reset (deletes all the data!) or a service center, and in some cases, experts can extract data using the chip-off method (direct read from the memory chip), but this is expensive and does not guarantee 100% results.
What to do if your phone requires a password to connect to your PC?
5. Third-party programs for data recovery
If standard methods don't work, you can try specialized utilities that scan the phone's internal memory and recover deleted files. Importantly, the efficiency depends on whether the data was overwritten. The fewer actions you perform on your phone after you lose files, the better the odds.
- π₯οΈ Dr.Fone (Wondershare): Xiaomi supports and can recover photos, messages, contacts. There is a free trial.
- π± DiskDigger: works without root rights, but finds more files with them.
- π EaseUS MobiSaver: specializes in media files and chat rooms WhatsApp/Viber.
How to use (as an example of Dr.Fone):
- Install the program on your PC and connect your phone via USB.
- Select the type of data to scan (e.g. Gallery or Messages).
- Wait for the analysis to be completed (it may take up to an hour).
- View the files found and save them to your computer.
β οΈ Warning: Do not install data recovery software on the lost phone itself β this can overwrite deleted files and make them impossible to recover!
π‘
If the phone is found but not turned on, try charging it from another power source (such as a power bank) - sometimes a problem with a damaged cable or charger.
6 Prevention: How to avoid future data loss
The best way to protect yourself from data loss is to set up automatic backups, which take no more than 5 minutes on Xiaomi phones:
- βοΈ Mi Cloud: Go to Settings β Mi Account β Mi Cloud and enable sync for all categories (contacts, gallery, notes) Make sure you have enough space β 5GB is free.
- π€ Google Backup: In Settings β Google β Backup activate Data Backup option, which will save application settings, call history and SMS.
- π² Local Copy: Use apps like Swift Backup (requires root) or Titanium Backup to create backups on your home. SD-map.
Additional security measures:
Set a password or a pattern lock (at least 6 characters).
Enable Find the device in Mi Cloud and Google.
Make sure that you regularly (once a month) have backups.
π‘
Even if your phone is stolen, sync with Mi Cloud or Google will allow you to recover up to 90% of the data on your new device.
