A microSD card is an easy way to expand Xiaomiβs memory without buying a new device. However, many users have difficulty connecting for the first time: the phone doesnβt see the card, requires formatting, or offers uncomfortable use cases. In this article, weβll look at all possible scenarios, from physical installation to customization in MIUI, including nuances for different Redmi models, POCO and flagship lines.
It's important to understand that the process of activating the memory card depends on the firmware version and device model. For example, on the Xiaomi 12T Pro with MIUI 14, the algorithm differs from the Redmi Note 10 on MIUI 12.5. We took these differences into account and put together universal solutions that work on 90% of the brand's devices. If your smartphone does not see the card even after all the manipulations, there is a section on the diagnostics of malfunctions at the end of this article.
1. Physical installation of memory card in the smartphone Xiaomi
Before you can set up a card in the system, you need to insert it correctly into the slot. Xiaomi has two types of designs:
- π± Hybrid slot (on most Redmi models) POCO): It's a place for nano-SIM and microSD. You have to choose the second. SIM memory-card.
- π± Separate slot (on flagships like Xiaomi 13 Ultra): allows you to use two SIM-map + MicroSD simultaneously.
To insert a map:
- Turn off your phone (required! otherwise you risk damaging the slot contacts).
- Find a card tray β it is usually located on the top or side of the device.
- Use a paper clip or a special key from the kit to remove the tray.
- Place the microSD in the appropriate groove (contacts down, beveled corner to yourself).
- Carefully push the tray back before the click.
π‘
If the tray is not inserted to the end, check if the card is skewed. Forced pressure can break the mechanism!
Once the phone is turned on, the system must automatically identify a new storage device, and if that doesn't happen, move on to the next section.
2. First connection: what to do if the phone does not see the card
If there is no notification of a new drive after installing the microSD in the status bar, follow these steps:
Check if the card is inserted correctly (turn it over)
Reboot the phone.
Try another card (to rule out the malfunction of the microSD itself)
Clean the slot contacts with a dry soft brush
-->
If the card is physically correct, but the phone does not recognize it:
- Open Settings β About Phone β MIUI version and tap 7 times on the line with the version to activate the developer mode.
- Go back to Settings β More β For developers and find the Debugging by USB (enable it).
- Connect your phone to your PC and check if your computer sees the card through MTP-protocol.
Critical information: On some models (e.g. Redmi 9A), the memory card slot can be locked at the software level if the device was purchased in certain regions (e.g. for telecom operators), in which case only the flashing will help.
3. Formatting a memory card in MIUI: step-by-step instructions
When the phone first detects a microSD, it suggests formatting it, which is a must if you want to use the card as an internal storage (extension of memory for applications) or a portable storage (for files), and we'll take a look at both.
To start formatting:
- After finding the card, tap on the notification "Setting up new" SD-map".
- Choose one of the modes: π± Internal storage: the map will become part of the system (applications can be transferred to it! π Portable storage: the card will only be used for files (photos, music, documents) and can be safely retrieved.
"Clean and format"
Wait for the process to be completed (it can take up to 5 minutes depending on the size of the card).
Internal storage (for applications)
Portable storage (file only)
I haven't decided yet.
Another option-->
If you have chosen internal storage, the system will suggest moving some of the data from the main drive to the card, and we recommend doing this later, after you have fully configured the phone, to avoid crashes.
4. Set up a memory card as an internal storage
Using microSD as internal memory allows you to install applications on the card, but has limitations:
- β οΈ The card will be encrypted and will only work on this phone.
- β οΈ Application speed may drop if class map UHS-I U1 lower.
- β οΈ Some system applications (such as Mi Home) are not portable to the map.
To move applications to the map:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select the desired application (such as WhatsApp or Telegram).
- Slip the Storage" β "Change" β choose SD-map.
- Confirm the transfer (the application data will be copied and the original deleted from the internal memory).
What applications can not be transferred to the memory card?
For optimal performance, we recommend using A2 or UHS-I U3 cards (such as SanDisk Extreme or Samsung EVO Plus) that provide read/write speeds of at least 90/40 MB/s, which is critical for running applications.
5. Optimization of portable storage
If you've chosen portable storage mode, the card will be available as a removable disk to make the most of it:
| Action. | How to execute | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Saving photo/video on the map | In the annex of the Chamber β Settings β Memory. β choose SD-map | Save space in internal memory |
| Transfer of media files | Use Files β Select Files β Move β Select a Map | Frees up to 50% of internal memory |
| Auto-saving downloads | In the browser (Chrome or Mi Browser) β Settings β Downloads β Specify the path to the map | APK-Files and documents do not occupy the system space. |
| Encryption of the map | Settings β Security β Encryption SD-map | Data protection in case of card loss |
For convenience, you can create folders on the map by category:
SD- Map/
βββ Photo/
βββ Video/
βββ Music/
βββ Documents/
βββ Loading/This will make it easier to find files and prevent chaos in the root directory. Remember: regularly clean the card of unnecessary files (for example, app cache or duplicate photos) to avoid overflowing.
6. Frequent errors and their solution
Even after you set it up properly, users face problems, and here are the most common ways to fix them:
β οΈ Note: If the memory card suddenly becomes βdamagedβ or the phone requires it to be formatted every time you connect, this may indicate physical wear and tear (especially if the card is more than 3-4 years old.
- π "Map removed incorrectly": Connect your phone to charge and restart it. If the error persists, check the card on another device.
- π« "SD-Card protected from writing": SanDisk and some others have a physical lock switch - move it to Unlock position.
- π’ Slow card operation: Check the speed class (should be no lower than the speed limit) U1 Or Class 10. Use the utility. A1 SD Bench for speed testing.
- π Phone can't see files on the map: They may be hidden. Connect the card to your PC and enable the display of hidden files in Explorer (View) β Hidden elements).
If the card is detected but not opened, try scanning it for viruses using Malwarebytes or the built-in MIUI antivirus. Some malicious files (such as.lnk viruses) can block access to folders.
7 How to safely remove the memory card
Misremoving the microSD can cause data loss or file system damage. Always use the Safe Retrieval feature:
- Open the notification panel and tap the icon "SD-card".
- Select "Extract" (or "Out" in some versions of MIUI).
- Wait for the "Safely Extract" notification.
- Only then do you physically remove the card.
If you forgot to safely disable the card and it stopped working:
- Connect it to the PC through the card reader.
- Run Command Prompt on behalf of the administrator.
- Enter the command: chkdsk E: /f (replace E: with the letter of your drive).
- Wait for the check to be completed and reconnect the card to the phone.
π‘
Never retrieve a card while writing files (e.g. while shooting videos or copying data) and this can result in sector loss and the drive being completely inoperable.
8. Diagnostics of malfunctions: when the card is not working
If none of these methods worked, the problem could be hardware.
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The phone doesnβt see the card, but it works on other devices. | Faulty slot or contacts | Contact the service center for cleaning/replacement of the slot |
| The map is defined but not formatted | The file system is damaged. | Use the SD Formatter utility on PC |
| The phone freezes when you connect the card | Firmware conflict | Update MIUI to the latest version |
| The card heats up when used | Fake or defective card | Check with H2testw for authenticity |
To verify the authenticity of the memory card:
- Download the H2testw utility (free, works without installation).
- Connect the card to the PC through the card reader.
- Start H2testw, select the drive letter and click "Write + Verify".
- If the actual volume is less than the declared, the card is fake.
On the market, up to 30% of microSD cards are fakes. Samsung EVO and SanDisk Ultra models are especially often counterfeited. Buy cards only from official dealers or in trusted stores (for example, Svyaznoy, M. Video, Xiaomi Store).
