If your smartphone Xiaomi suddenly stopped recognizing SD-You've swallowed it as part of your internal memory, and you're not alone. MIUI, where Adoptable Storage is activated automatically or by mistake, and as a result, files are tied to the card, and it becomes impossible to extract it in the standard way - the system simply does not see the option of safe extraction.
The problem is that Xiaomi doesn't always provide an obvious interface to reverse this mode "SD-The good news is that you can return the card to its original state without losing data, if you follow a clear algorithm. In this article, we'll discuss 5 working methods, including hidden settings. MIUI, team ADB, Recovery through PC.
⚠️ Note: If critical data (photos, documents) is stored on the card, first create a backup copy through Settings. → Memory. → Backup: Forced retrieval of the card without canceling Adoptable Storage mode can damage the file system.
The methods in the article are tested on smartphones Redmi Note 10 Pro, Poco X3 Pro, Xiaomi 11T with MIUI 12.5-14. On older versions (for example, MIUI 11), some methods may not work – we will warn about this separately.
1.Cancel the "Inner Memory" mode through the MIUI settings
The easiest way is to use the built-in tools of the system, which is suitable if the card is still displayed in the memory menu, but not retrieved.
Open the Settings. → Memory (or Storage in New Versions) MIUI). Find the section "SD-map" -- there should be an active option "Use as internal memory." Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select "Storage settings".
- 🔍 Item 1: In the list of drives tap on your SD-card (it may be called "Portable storage" or "Inner memory" marked "SD").
- ⚙️ Item 2: Select "Format as a portable device" (or "Cancel internal storage" in MIUI 13+).
- ⚠️ Item 3: Confirm action, the system will warn you that all data on the map will be erased. This is the only official way to do this without losing functionality, but with deleting files.
If you don't have a "Format as a portable device" option, Xiaomi has blocked this option for your model.
⚠️ Note: On some devices (e.g. Redmi) 9A s MIUI 12.0.8) After formatting, the card may not be redefined, in which case it will help to reboot the smartphone or connect the card to another device for initialization.
2.Use of ADB forced-off SD-map
If MIUI doesn't cancel internal memory, Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a PC debugging tool, can help, and it saves data on the map, but requires care.
First, turn on USB debugging on your smartphone:
- Go to Settings → About the phone and tap on the “MIUI version” 7 times (the notification “You became a developer”) will appear.
- Return to Settings → Additional → For developers and activate “Debugging by USB”.
- Connect your phone to your PC via cable (use Xiaomi’s original cord for a stable connection).
Now download ADB Tools for your OS and execute commands in the terminal (or Command Prompt):
adb shell
sm list-disksThe system will display a list of disks - remember your ID SD-maps, for example, disk:179,64) Then enter:
sm partition disk:179,64 privateReplace 179.64 with your ID. Once you have completed the command, restart your smartphone and the card will be removable.
☑️ Preparation for work with ADB
⚠️ Attention: MIUI 14 sm partition may return the "Operation not allowed" error, in which case try an alternative method via Fastboot (described in section 4).
3. Formatting a card via PC (if Xiaomi doesn't see SD)
If the smartphone doesn't recognize the card at all, but it's detected on the computer, you can return it to its original state through Disk Utility (macOS), which erases all data, but restores the drive to work.
Connect. SD-card to PC via card reader and follow the steps:
- 🖥️ For Windows: Press Win + R, enter diskmgmt.msc. Find yours. SD-card (usually marked as a "Removable Disk" with a file system) RAW or FAT32). Right-click. → "Format" → choose FAT32 (or exFAT for cards >64GB).
For macOS:
- Open the "Applications → Utilities" tool.
- Choose. SD-left-hand-menu → "Erase" → format MS-DOS (FAT).
After formatting, insert the card back into Xiaomi, and the system should suggest using it as a portable storage device.
| File system | Max, card size. | Compatibility with Xiaomi | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | 32GB | Yes. | Older models (Redmi 4X, Mi A1) |
| exFAT | 2 TB | Yes (starting with MIUI 10) | Modern smartphones (Poco F4, Xiaomi 12) |
| NTFS | limitlessly | No (root requires) | Only for PCs |
💡
If the map is not defined in Xiaomi after formatting, try formatting it again via your phone: → Memory. → SD-map → Formatting as an internal → Cancellation (yes, it works!).
4. Resetting settings to factory (extreme case)
If none of the methods worked, you'll have a hard reset, which will delete all the data from your phone, including your Adoptable Storage settings, and return it. SD-It's guaranteed to work, but you only have to use it when you're absolutely sure that all the data is backed up.
Instructions:
- Go to Settings → About the phone → Reset settings.
- Select “Erase all data” (or “Restore factory settings”).
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot (it will take 5-10 minutes).
After discharge, insert SD-The card will be re-carded, and the system will prompt you to select the mode of use".
⚠️ Note: On some models (Redmi Note 8 Pro, Mi) 9T) After reset, slots may need to be re-activated SIM-Write down the maps in advance. IMEI phone number (dial *#06#).
What if the card is not determined after resetting?
5. Data recovery from formatted SD-map
If you format a map by mistake or the system erased data during a regime change, you can try to restore it with specialized programs, and note that the fewer write operations you have after formatting, the higher the chances of success.
Recommended tools:
- 💾 Recuva (free, for Windows) – recovers photos, videos, documents.
- 🖥️ Disk Drill (paid trial version) – supports exFAT and NTFS.
- 🍎 EaseUS Data Recovery (for macOS) - interface in Russian.
The recovery algorithm:
- Connect. SD-card to PC via card reader.
- Start the program and select a deep level scan (Deep Scan).
- After analysis, mark the files you need and save them to your hard drive (not to a card!).
⚠️ Important: Do not save the recovered files back to SD-map – this can overwrite the remaining data.
💡
Recovery software only works with files that have not been overwritten by new data, and if you take a photo or download music to a map after formatting, the chances of returning old files are near zero.
Why Xiaomi is Automatically Integrated SD-memory-card?
Adoptable Storage, which is implemented in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, allows you to use removable drives as part of the main storage. Xiaomi actively uses it in MIUI, but often without explicit user notice.
- 📱 Small internal memory: If less than 10% of the phone’s space is available, the system may offer to expand the storage by adding more space to the phone. SD-map.
- ⚡ Quick setup: When you first connect the card MIUI Sometimes, you automatically select the internal memory mode, especially on budget models (Redmi). 7A, Poco C3).
- 🔄 Firmware update: After major updates (for example, with MIUI 12 on MIUI 13) storage settings may be reset.
To avoid such a situation in the future:
- Always select Portable Storage when you first connect. SD-map.
- Turn off automatic formatting in Settings → Memory → Additional → Store Autoset (not available on all models).
- Use A1 or A2 cards – they are optimized to work as internal memory and are less likely to cause crashes.
