The downloadable content on Xiaomi smartphones is not only the obvious files from the Download folder, but also hidden application data, browser cache, temporary messenger files and even system log files that take up gigabytes of memory. Many users face a situation where the phoneβs memory is filled with βunknown whatβ: MIUI shows that 20-30 GB is occupied, but manually find and delete these files does not work. In this article, we will analyze all possible sources of downloadable content on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO, including hidden folders, cache of system applications and garbage from updates.
Feature of firmware MIUI β Aggressive caching of data to speed up work, but often it leads to overflow of memory. For example, the Gallery application can store thumbnails of photos in a hidden folder.thumbnails, and Mi Browser can download media files in the background. We will not only look at standard cleaning methods through Settings. β Memory, but also manual methods using a file manager, ADB-commands and even reset partition cache through recovery mode.
It is important to understand: simply removing files from the Download folder solves the problem only on the Internet. 10-15%. The bulk of the:
- π Cache applications (including system applications, such as com.miui.gallery)
- π Temporary update files (folder.OTA)
- π₯ Hidden downloads of messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber)
- π΅ Media files from notifications (for example, previews from TikTok or Instagram)
- π§ Log files of the system (log folders, bugreport)
If your Xiaomi gives you a notification βMemory is almost fullβ but you donβt find large files, this article will help you find and delete everything you donβt need, including data that isnβt displayed in the standard interface.
1. Standard cleaning through MIUI settings
To start with, the simplest method that works for most users, MIUI has a built-in memory cleaner, but it often skips hidden files. Here's how to use it correctly:
Open Settings β Memory. Here you will see a diagram of occupied space. Click on Clean at the bottom of the screen. The system will scan the device and prompt you to delete:
- ποΈ Application cache (temporary files that can be safely deleted)
- π Downloaded files (Download folder)
- π Duplicate files (if the function of searching for duplicates is enabled)
However, this method has limitations:
β οΈ Note: Standard cleaning does not remove the cache of system applications (such as Mi Video or Music), as well as files from hidden folders such as.thumbnails or.OTA. Removal of these will require the manual methods described below.
After cleaning, restart the phone to help the system correctly recalculate the free space, and if after rebooting the memory again shows full, move to the next partition.
2. Manual deletion of files through the file manager
Deep cleaning requires a file manager with access to system folders, and we recommend using a built-in Files or third-party applications like Solid Explorer (with root enabled if you have superuser rights).
Open the file manager and go to the root directory (/storage/emulated/0/).
- π Download is the standard download folder. Delete all unnecessary files, especially files with extensions.apk,.zip,.rar.
- π DCIM/.thumbnails β Photo and video thumbnails. You can delete all content (files will be restored automatically).
- π.OTA β update-file MIUI. If the update is already installed, the folder can be cleaned.
- π Android/data β cache of games and applications. Delete the folders of applications that you have not used in a long time.
- π MIUI/Backup β backups of the system. If you don't need backups, delete them.
The Android/obb folder often takes several gigabytes to store game data (such as Genshin Impact or Call of Duty Mobile) only if you are sure that the game will no longer be needed.
For convenience, use size sorting: in Solid Explorer, click three dots β Sort by size β Size (in descending order) so you can quickly find the largest files.

3. Cleaning the cache of system applications
Many MIUI applications (e.g. Gallery, Music, Mi Browser) store gigabytes of cache that are not removed by standard methods.
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select an app (e.g. Gallery).
- Press Warehouse. β Clear the cache.
- For complete cleaning, click Clear Data (β οΈ This will remove all application settings!).
Pay particular attention to the following annexes:
- πΌοΈ Gallery (com.miui.gallery) β cache of thumbnails and edited photos.
- π Mi Browser (com.android.browser) β uploaded files and cache of pages.
- π΅ Music (com.miui.player) - cache of album covers.
- π± Topics (com.android.themes) β downloaded themes.
β οΈ Attention: Clearing the data of the Settings app (com.android.settings) may reset some system settings (such as Wi-Fi or sound settings.
To speed up the process, use batch cleaning:
- In Application Management, click on three dots β Sort by size.
- Select applications with a large cache (from 100 MB) and clean them one by one.
π‘
If after cleaning the cache, the application is slower, restart the phone - the system will restore the necessary temporary files.
4. Deletion of hidden files of messengers and social networks
Messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp, Viber) and social networks (TikTok, Instagram) are actively downloading media files in the background. These files take up space, but do not appear in the gallery.
| Annex | The path to files | What can be removed |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram | /storage/emulated/0/Telegram/Telegram Images | All media files except important ones |
| /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp/Media | WhatsApp Images folders, WhatsApp Video | |
| Viber | /storage/emulated/0/Viber/media | All files except chat backups |
| TikTok | /storage/emulated/0/TikTok/cache | All cache (video previews, thumbnails) |
| /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.instagram.android/cache | Cash stories and video previews |
To prevent automatic downloading of media in the future:
- In Telegram: Settings β Data and Memory β Media Autoboot β Turn off download for mobile data.
- On WhatsApp: Settings β Storage β Storage Management β Delete unnecessary files.
β οΈ Attention: Deletion of folder WhatsApp/Databases This will lead to the loss of chat history! WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt14 β It is not recommended to touch them.
How to recover deleted files from messengers?
5. Cleaning through Recovery Mode (for power users)
If standard methods didnβt help and memory is still filled with invisible files, try clearing the partition cache through Recovery Mode, which doesnβt delete user data, but resets the system cache, which can take up to 1-2 GB.
Instructions for Xiaomi with MIUI Recovery:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the Volume Up + Power buttons before the Mi logo appears.
- Select the language from the recovery menu (if there is one).
- Go to Wipe & Reset β Wipe Cache.
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion.
- Reboot the phone (Reboot) β Reboot to System).
If you have custom Recovery installed on your device (such as TWRP), the process is slightly different:
- In TWRP, select Wipe β Advanced Wipe.
- Check Cache only (do not touch Data or System!).
- Swipe to Wipe (Swipe to Wipe) with your finger.
β οΈ Warning: Don't confuse Wipe Cache with Wipe Data! The second option will completely reset the phone to factory settings, deleting all your files and apps.
π‘
Clearing the cache through the recavators does not delete user data, but can speed up the system by removing temporary update files and logs.
6.Use of ADB for deep cleaning (advanced method)
For users familiar with ADB (Android Debug Bridge), there is an option to remove system debris that is not available through standard settings, a method that requires connecting the phone to a computer and enabling debugging over USB.
Steps to clean through ADB:
- Turn on Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone and click on MIUI Version 7 times.
- Return to Settings β Additional β For developers and enable USB debugging.
- Connect your phone to your PC and open the command line (Windows) or terminal (macOS/Linux).
- Enter the command to check the connection: Adb devices should appear the name of your device.
- Delete the cache of all applications with one command: adb shell pm trim-caches 1000000000 (this will clear the cache up to 1 GB).
- To delete temporary update files, do adb shell rm -rf /data/local/tmp/*
Additional useful commands:
- π View the list of large files in /data: adb shell du -ah /data | sort -rh | head -n 20
- ποΈ Delete the system log files: adb shell rm -rf /data/log/*
β οΈ Attention: Rm teams -rf If you don't specify the right path, you can delete critical system files.
7. Cleaning automation: applications and scripts
To avoid manually clearing memory, you can use third-party applications or scripts to automatically clean it.
Cleaning applications:
- π§Ή SD Maid β removes unnecessary files, duplicates and cache (requires root for full functionality).
- ποΈ Files by Google is a simple tool for finding large and unnecessary files.
- π Storage Analyzer β visualizes occupied space by folders.
Automatic scripts (for root users):
- Install Tasker and create a task for weekly cache cleaning.
- Use the script for Termux: pkg install termux-api termux-storage-setup cd ~/storage/shared rm -rf Download/.thumbnails rm -rf *.apk rm -rf *.zip
MacroDroid is suitable for users without root rights - the application allows you to create automatic rules, for example, clean the Download folder once a week.
8 What to do if the memory is still full?
If after all the manipulations, the phoneβs memory still shows full, the problem may lie in:
- π Hidden sections (e.g, /data/app or /system), which are not displayed in the file manager.
- π οΈ A damaged file system β in this case, only a reset to factory settings will help.
- π± Mistakes. MIUI, when the system does not calculate free space (solved by flashing).
Extreme measures:
- Reset to factory settings (Settings) β The phone. β Resetting settings). β οΈ Delete all data!
- Fastboot flashing (if the reset didn't help). For instructions for your model, look at the XDA Developers forum.
- Replacement of the memory module (relevant for older Xiaomi models with memory controller problems).
If you suspect that the problem is in the hardware (for example, the phone shows "memory is full", but in fact there are few files), contact the service center. This may be a sign of wear and tear of flash memory.
