Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones know how quickly built-in storage is filled, especially if you like to shoot high-resolution videos or take pictures in RAW format. Modern cameras of flagship and mid-budget models create large files, and the standard 128 or 256 GB ceases to be enough in just a few months of active shooting. Fortunately, many of the brand’s devices support the installation of microSD cards, which allows you to significantly expand the available space.
Unfortunately, by default, MIUI or HyperOS doesn’t offer a single “magic button” to transfer all future images to an external medium.This often comes as a surprise to users who expect the feature to work automatically. However, there are proven ways to get around this limitation and configure automatic media saving directly to an external drive, which we will discuss in detail below.
Preparation of a memory card for working with the camera
Before you set up the software, you need to make sure that the physical media is ready for intense recording. The smartphone camera works with data specifically: it creates temporary buffers and records streaming video, which requires a high speed of card response. Using cheap C10 cards without U3 or V30 labeling can cause video recording to be interrupted and photos to be stored with a delay.
Insert the card into the slot and wait for the system to notify you of the connection of the new device. Android will offer to use the drive as a portable storage or internal memory. For the purpose of saving photos and videos, it is better to choose the option of portable storage, as this will allow you to easily remove the card to transfer files to your computer without losing data or the need for formatting.
Once connected, the system may suggest formatting the map. Agreed to format, but pre-copy important data if there was any. The file system must be Android compatible, usually exFAT or FAT32. If the map is new, this process will go quickly and prepare the folder structure necessary for the gallery to work properly.
It's important to check the amount of space available. Go to the storage settings and make sure the system sees the full volume of the card, not just a portion of it. Sometimes cheap cards have less real capacity than the stated capacity, which will lead to cyclical overwriting or save errors.
⚠️ Note: Do not remove the memory card during the process of shooting or saving a series of photos. This can damage the file system of the drive and lead to the loss of just taken pictures.

Use memory cards labeled A1 or A2 – they are optimized to run applications and quickly work with a lot of small files, which will speed up the gallery.
Set up a standard Camera application
The easiest and most reliable way to move storage is to use the Camera app's built-in settings. In recent versions of MIUI and HyperOS shells, this functionality is often hidden or renamed, but the algorithm of actions remains similar for most models. Open the camera app and find the settings menu, usually represented by three horizontal bars or a gear in the corner of the screen.
In the list of parameters that opens, you need to find the item that is responsible for the priority of the record. SD-You activate this switch, and then all the new images will be automatically sent to the external drive, bypassing the internal memory of the device.
It’s worth noting that some shooting modes, such as 8K Video, Slow Motion, or real-time AI modes, can ignore this setup, because UFS’ internal memory is faster than memory cards, and the system requires maximum write speed to process heavy video streams without losing frames.
If you don’t find a switch in the standard menu, your version of the camera app may not support this directly, so you can try clearing the camera app data through your Android settings to reset to factory settings, after which the item may reappear.

Use of third-party applications for shooting
If a regular app doesn't work, or you want to have more control over the process, installing third-party software is a great solution. App stores offer a lot of cameras that can flexibly manage the ways you save, and one of the best options is Open Camera, a free, open-source, advertising-free app.
Once you install Open Camera, you need to go to the settings (cogs), select the Settings section, and find the option “Images folder” or “Preferred storage location.” Here you can explicitly indicate the path to your memory card. The app will remember this choice and use it by default for all future shots.
The advantage of third-party cameras is that you can set up separate folders for different types of shooting, use manual exposure and focus settings, and use real-time filters, which makes the shooting process more professional and convenient for mobile photography enthusiasts.
Another popular option is the Google Camera (GCam) app ported to Xiaomi devices. Many GCam builds also have the option of selecting storage, although it can be hidden in the "Additional" menu or require activation via a configuration file.
Transfer of existing photos
Set up future shooting is only half the solution, and it often happens that the internal memory is already packed with an archive of old photos that need to be released, and you can use the built-in File Manager Explorer or the more advanced Mi Explorer.
Find the DCIM/Camera folder in internal memory. Select all the files or folders you need by date. Click on Copy or Move (usually available in the More menu or by long press) and then go to the memory card root (often designated as /storage/sdcard1 or the card manufacturer name) and create a similar folder structure there by inserting files.
Using the Move feature is safer, as it will automatically delete the originals after a successful copy, freeing up space. However, if the process is interrupted due to battery drain or error, you risk losing files. So for large amounts of data (over 10 GB), it is better to use the Copy feature, make sure that the files have opened in a new place, and only then delete the originals.
Alternatively, you can use a computer: connect your smartphone over USB, select file transfer mode (MTP), and drag the DCIM folder from the internal drive to the memory card drive via the Windows or macOS interface. This is often faster and more stable for transferring thousands of files at once.
What to do if the files are not copied?
Solving Saving Problems on SD
Even after you set it up correctly, you can have errors, and one of the common problems is that you can't save it, and this can be because the memory card is in the background for other processes, like recording a voice recorder or caching cards, and then you can reboot your smartphone, which resets all the time processes and frees up access to the file system.
Another cause is damage to the recording sector or file system error. Android can block the recording to a suspicious medium to protect the data. Check the card for errors by connecting it to your computer and running the standard disk check procedure, or use diagnostic applications SD-card right on the phone.
App permissions are also worth paying attention to. In modern versions of Android (11 and above), access to the file system is strictly regulated. Make sure that the Camera or Explorer app is given permission to access all files, not just media files. This can be checked in Settings → Applications → Application Management → Camera → Permissions.

The stability of the camera depends on the quality of the memory card, and cheap drives often cause data loss and smartphone freezes.
Optimization of the gallery with external memory
When using a memory card to store media, the standard MIUI gallery can run slower, because it has to index files on an external medium that reads faster than internal memory, and to speed up the work, it is recommended to periodically clear the cache of the Gallery and Mediaservice applications.
To do this, go to Settings → Apps → All apps, find Gallery, select Storage and click Clear Cache. Don’t confuse it with the Clean All button, which will delete the app’s settings but not your photos. This procedure is safe and helps eliminate hangovers when you scroll through albums.
If you use third-party galleries like Google Photos or Simple Gallery, make sure their settings also include scanning of external memory cards. SD-Cards to save traffic or battery by reading only cloud copies or local memory.
Check the integrity of your data regularly, connect your phone to your PC every few months, and run a check for broken links or corrupted files, to avoid the situation where important photos stop opening at the most inopportune time.
⚠️ Note: When formatting a memory card through your phone's settings, all data on it will be permanently deleted. Always back up important photos on your computer or in the cloud before any formatting.
