How to save a photo to a memory card in Xiaomi Redmi Note: all ways

Xiaomi Redmi Note smartphones are some of the most popular devices with support for microSD cards. But many users face the problem: the default photos are stored in internal memory, quickly filling it. SD-card – from camera settings to manually moving through the file manager.

The Redmi Note (especially the 10 Pro, 11 Pro+, 12 Pro) is that MIUI can restrict external storage because of Android security policies, and we'll show you how to get around those restrictions legally, without rooting rights, and why sometimes photos aren't saved to the map even when everything is set up correctly -- and how to fix them.

Important: the instructions are current for MIUI 12/13/14 and Android 11/12/13. If you have an older version of the firmware, some menu items may differ - we will warn you about this separately.

1. Setup of the camera to save the photo on SD-map

The easiest way is to change the default save location right in the camera app, which works for all Redmi Note models starting with the Note 8.

Open the standard Camera app, then:

1. Touch the gear badge (⚙️) top-right.
2. Scroll down to the Save Place section.
3. Select Memory Card (SD). If the option is inactive, see the next section.

⚠️ Attention: On the Redmi Note 10S Note 11 Pro with MIUI 13+ This item may not be available. In this case, use the file manager method (section 3).

If the camera still saves the photo to internal memory after changing the settings, restart the smartphone. Sometimes MIUI resets the settings after the update.

2.Why is the Save to SD option inactive?

If the camera settings item Memory Map gray and it can not be selected, the reasons may be as follows:

• 📱 Memory card is not formatted as internal storage. MIUI requires this to be done by recording application data.
• 🔒 No recording rights for the camera (relevant for Android 11)+).

To fix the formatting problem:

1. Go to Settings → Storage → Memory Map.

3. Manually move photos through the file manager

If the camera is stubbornly ignoring the settings, you can manually transfer the photo.

1. Open the Files app (or Mi File Manager).
2. Go to the Inner Memory → DCIM → Camera.
3. Select the desired photos (long press → ticks).
4. Click Move and select Memory Map → DCIM → Camera.

🔹 Important: Folder DCIM on SD-The map must exist in advance. If it's not there, create it by hand.

⚠️ Note: When moving through Mi File Manager, sometimes the photo timestamps are lost. To avoid this, use Google Photos (section 5).

4. Automatic Save via Google Photos

If the system methods do not work, set up automatic upload of photos to Google Photos and then save to SD:

1. Install Google Photos from the Play Market.
2. Enable Backup and Synchronization in the application settings.
3. After uploading the photo to the cloud, open the files → Google Photos.
4. Select the pictures. → Save it to the device. → choose SD-map.

📌 Plus, the photo is saved in its original quality, and the time stamps are not lost.

5.Use of ADB for forced retention on SD

For advanced users: if MIUI blocks a card entry, you can force a change in the save path through ADB. This works even on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ with the latest firmware.

You'll need:

• 💻 Computer with installed ADB Tools.
• 🔌 USB-cable (preferably original).
• 📱 Included Debugging by USB on the phone (Settings) → The phone. → Version. MIUI → 7 times press → return to → For developers).

Then enter in the command line:

adb shell


setprop persist.camera.hal1.enable 1




setprop persist.sys.camera.sdcard 1

After the reboot, the camera should save the photo to SD. If it didn't work, try an alternative command:

adb shell dumpsys media.camera --set-save-path=/storage/XXXX-XXXX/DCIM/Camera

(Replace XXXX-XXXX with your card ID, which can be recognised by adb shell ls /storage).

6. Frequent errors and their solutions

"I couldn't save the photo on the SD-map is the most common mistake. Causes and solutions:

• 🚫 Card is Write-Protected: Check the physical switch on the adapter (if any).
• 🗑️ Not enough space: MIUI Requires at least 10% free space on the map.
• 🔄 Conflict with other apps: Close the gallery, photo editors and instant messengers before shooting.
• 🛡️ Limitations MIUI: On some firmware, the camera can save on SD It's just a photo, not a video.

💡 Tip: If photos are saved to the card, but then disappear – check the settings of Optimization of memory in Settings → Features → Optimization. MIUI Sometimes it automatically cleans the "unnecessary" files from the SD.

On the Redmi Note 11 and later with Android 12+, the camera can only save to SD in HEIF (HEIC) format. To save to JPG, you will need to use a file manager or ADB.

7. Alternative applications for saving photos

If the standard camera refuses to work with SD, install third-party applications:

• 📸 Open Camera: In the settings there is a save folder → choose SD.

⚠️ Note: When using Open Camera on Redmi Note 10 Pro, you may experience lag when shooting in the Redmi Note 10 Pro. 4K. In that case, lower the permit to 1080p.

🔧 Technical nuance: Some apps (like Snapchat or Instagram) ignore save settings and always use internal memory.
