Xiaomiβs MIUI or HyperOS smartphones offer several ways to hide personal photos from prying eyes, from built-in gallery features to third-party encryption applications. However, not all methods are equally reliable: some simply hide files from public access, while others password-protect them or even remove traces from the system. In this article, we will discuss 5 working methods, including little-known tricks for advanced users.
It's important to understand the difference between "hiding" and "protecting." For example, moving photos to the.nomedia folder will make them invisible to the gallery, but any file manager will show them without restrictions. At the same time, password-encrypted archives or hidden sections in Mi Gallery require authorization to access. We tested all methods on current versions of firmware (2026) and indicated the limitations of each.
1. Built-in "Hidden Album" feature in Mi Gallery
The easiest way to do this is to use the hidden album available in the standard Gallery app, which works on all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones with MIUI 12+ or HyperOS, but has an important limitation: hidden photos remain in the deviceβs memory and can be found through the file manager.
To activate the hidden album:
- π± Open the Gallery app and select the photos/videos you want to hide.
- π§ Click on three dots in the upper right corner β Hide (or Add to a Hidden Album).
- π Enter your password (if you have not previously set it) or confirm your fingerprint.
- ποΈβπ¨οΈ To see hidden files, go to Albums β Hidden album and log in.
π‘
If the Hide option is not on the menu, update Mi Gallery via Google Play or App Store β in older versions, the feature could be called Block.
β οΈ Note: The files hidden through the gallery are not protected from access via PCs or file managers like Total Commander. They are simply excluded from the gallery indexing.
2.Folder.nomedia: how to hide photos from the gallery forever
The.nomedia folder method works at the system level: Android ignores the media files in these folders when scanning. This does not protect files with a password, but makes them invisible to Mi Gallery, Google Photos and other applications.
Instructions:
- Open any file manager (e.g., Mi File Manager or Solid Explorer).
- Go to the folder where the photos are stored (usually /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/ or /Pictures/).
- Create a new folder called.nomedia (a point at the beginning is mandatory!).
- Move all the files that you need to hide into it.
- Reboot your smartphone or manually update your media base through Settings β Apps β Gallery β Memory β Clear the data.
What to do if the.nomedia folder is not working?
| Method | Gallery visibility | Password protection | Access via PC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hidden Album at Mi Gallery | β No. | β Yes. | β Yes. |
| Folder.nomedia | β No. | β No. | β Yes. |
| Password archive (ZIP/RAR) | β No. | β Yes. | β No (no password) |
| Third-party applications (such as KeepSafe) | β No. | β Yes. | β No. |
Password Archive: Strong Protection Without Third-Party Applications
If you need to not only hide photos, but also protect them from viewing even when you connect to a computer, the best way is to pack files into a password-enabled archive. This does not require root rights or special programs: the standard Archivator application (or RAR from Google Play) is enough.
Step-by-step:
- π Select a photo in the file manager, click More β Archive.
- π Choose the format ZIP or RAR (The latter supports more reliable encryption).
- π Set a password (minimum 8 characters, with numbers and letters).
- ποΈ Delete the original photos (optional if you want to cover the tracks completely).
β οΈ Note: If you forget your password, you canβt restore access to files, even through Xiaomi service centers. Store your password in a safe place (for example, in Google Keep with two-factor authentication).

Third-party applications: maximum protection with additional features
For users who need advanced features (e.g., false ones) PIN-We've tested 3 popular solutions and we've selected the best ones:
- π KeepSafe β encrypts photos and videos, supports fingerprint, there is a function of βfeign modeβ (shows fake files when entering the wrong password).
- π± GalleryVault β hides files and masquerades as a standard application (for example, the Camera), there is a built-in browser for downloading content directly to the storage.
- π Private Photo Vault β syncs to the cloud, supports albums with different levels of access (for example, for family and personal files).
How to set up KeepSafe:
- Download the app from Google Play and launch it.
- Create the lead PIN-code (or use biometrics).
- Import photos through the menu Add β From the gallery.
- Activate the Remove from the Gallery option to make the originals disappear from the standard viewer.
Make sure the app has more than 1 million downloads |Read reviews of data breaches |Check permissions (should not ask for SMS or contacts) |Configure backup password-->
β οΈ Note: Some applications (e.g. Gallery Lock) can save thumbnails in the system cache. To completely remove traces, after importing photos, clear the gallery cache through Settings β Annexes β gallery β Memory. β Clear the cache.
5. Hidden folders via TWRP (for advanced users)
If your Xiaomi has custom restore installed (TWRP), you can create a hidden folder that will not be accessible even through a file manager without root rights.
Instructions:
1. boot into TWRP (turn off the phone, then pinch Power + Volume up).
2. Go to Advanced β File Manager.
3. Create a folder with a name, such as.secret, in /data/media/0/.
4. Move the files to it.
5. Go back to the main TWRP menu and select Reboot β System.β οΈ Note: Delete or modify files through TWRP It can cause data loss or system failures. Before manipulation, back up through Backup in the same TWRP.
π‘
The TWRP method is the most reliable, but it requires an unlocked bootloader and risks cancelling the Xiaomi warranty. Use only if you are confident in your actions.
6. Masking for system files (for experienced users)
This method involves renaming files so that they look like system or cache applications. IMG_2026.jpg can be renamed com.android.system.cache_2026.dat. Most users and even viruses will ignore this file.
How to do this:
- π Use a file manager with renaming support (e.g., file manager, FX File Explorer).
- π€ Give the file a name that mimics the system (examples: libandroid_runtime.so.bak, dalvik-cache.x86_64.data).
- π Move the file to a type folder /Android/data/com.example.cache/ (Create it manually).
β οΈ Note: Do not use system file extensions (.so,.odex) as this can cause errors in the Android experience. cache_ or temp_.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even experienced users sometimes make mistakes when hiding photos.
- π Incomplete Hiding: Files remain in Recent Files or app cache Solution: Clear history in the gallery and cache via Settings β Memory. β Clean up.
- π Weak passwords: PIN-Codes like 1234 or 0000 are broken in seconds. Use combinations of letters, numbers and symbols.
- π± Cloud Sync: If backup is enabled in Google Photos or Mi Cloud, hidden photos may end up in the cloud.
Another problem is that you lose access after resetting your settings, so if you hide your photo through third-party apps, make sure that:
- π§ Password saved in a secure place (not in phone notes!).
- βοΈ Enabled backup of encryption keys (if supported by the application).
- π Check the availability of files periodically (e.g. once a month).
