Why Standard Removal Is Not the Solution
Have you ever faced a situation where you need to urgently hide a photo from prying eyes, but to delete it forever is too radical? Xiaomi smartphones (including Redmi and Poco) have several ways to hide photos, and most users do not even know about half of them. Simply removing it in the basket will not save โ photos are easy to recover through any application like DiskDigger or Recuva. But correctly hidden files will remain inaccessible without special knowledge.
In this article, we'll look at 5 working methods, from embedded MIUI functions to hidden folders to encryption. It's important to understand that not all methods are equally reliable. For example, hiding through a standard gallery Gallery โ Albums โ Hidden protects only from random viewing, not from targeted search. But creating an encrypted archive or using Second Space gives a much higher level of privacy.
Before you get to the instructions, check out the version of your shell: Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version. Some features (like the Private Album) only appeared in MIUI 12 and later. If you have old firmware, update it or use alternative methods from this article.
Method 1: Built-in "Private Album" in MIUI
The easiest and fastest method is to use the built-in Private Album feature, which is available on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 12 and later, including the Redmi Note 11, Xiaomi 12T and Poco F4. The main advantage is that you do not need to install third-party applications, and the minus is that protection only works at the password level from the lock screen.
To hide the photo:
- ๐ฑ Open a standard gallery (not Google Photos!).
- ๐ Select the right pictures, click More (โฎ) โ Move it to a private album.
- ๐ When you first use the system, ask PIN-code or use a fingerprint.
- ๐ To return the photo, go to the albums. โ Private album, log in and press Management โ Bring it back.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If you reset your phone to factory settings, all files from the Private Album will be permanently deleted.Be sure to transfer them back to the main gallery before resetting.
Remember. PIN-code (not the same as the pattern lock!)

Method 2: Hidden folders through the file manager
If you want to hide your photos from other people, but also from system applications (like Google Photos), use hidden folders. This method works on any version of MIUI, but requires knowledge of the structure of the file system.
Instructions:
- Open Files (the standard file manager of Xiaomi).
- Go to the Inner Memory โ DCIM (or SD-map, if there's a photo).
- Create a new folder with a dot at the beginning of the name, for example.hidden_photos.
- Move the necessary photos through Select โ Move.
- Return to the root directory and enable the display of hidden files: โฎ โ Settings โ Show hidden files.
Now the folder will not be displayed in the gallery, so you can see the photo again.
- ๐ Enable the display of hidden files in the manager.
- ๐ Move to the.hidden_photos and move the pictures back to DCIM/Camera.
What if the file is still visible in the gallery?
Method 3: Second Space โ a separate profile with a password
Second Space allows you to create a completely isolated workspace with your own applications, files and settings, ideal if you want to not just hide a photo, but completely separate personal data from your main profile.
How to set up:
- Go to Settings โ Special Options โ Second Space.
- Click Create Second Space and follow the instructions.
- After creation, switch to a new profile through the notification panel (icon) ๐ค).
- Copy the photo to the second profile gallery or take new pictures โ they will not be visible in the main space.
| Advantages | Deficiencies |
|---|---|
| Complete file isolation | Takes up extra space on the disk |
| Individual applications and settings | You need to switch between profiles. |
| Password/fingerprint protection | Some system updates reset settings |
โ ๏ธ Note: If you delete Second Space through settings, all data inside it (including photos) will be lost without recovery.
Method 4: Password Archive (ZIP/RAR)
One of the most reliable ways is to pack a photo into an encrypted archive, and even if someone finds a file, you can't open it without a password, and that's what RAR or ZArchiver apps do.
Step-by-step:
- ๐ฑ Install ZArchiver from Google Play.
- ๐ Open the app, find a folder with a photo (usually) DCIM/Camera).
- ๐ Select files, click Archive and select format ZIP or 7z.
- ๐ In the Encryption section, set a password (minimum 8 characters with numbers and letters!).
- ๐๏ธ After creating the archive, delete the original photos (they will remain in the archive only).
To get access again:
- Open the archives at ZArchiver.
- Enter the password.
- Take the photo to any folder.
๐ก
Use a password manager (like Bitwarden or KeePassDX) to keep your archive password in mind. Store your archive backup in the cloud (like Mega with client-side encryption).
Method 5: Third-party applications for hiding photos
If integrated functions MIUI You don't like it, you try specialized applications, they offer additional features: calculator masking, fake. PIN-Emergency code, cloud backup.
Top.-3 tested applications:
| Annex | Features | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| KeepSafe | Encryption, Fake PIN, Backup | Advertising in the free version |

The app side is handy, but remember that their databases can be vulnerable to hacker attacks. Never use simple passwords like "1234" or date of birth.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Many Xiaomi users have trouble hiding photos, and here are some of the most common mistakes and solutions:
- ๐ Photos return to gallery after reboot โ Make sure you move them to the.nomedia folder, rather than just renaming them.

- ๐ฑ Second Space is not being built. โ Check if there is enough disk space (at least 1 GB of free space is required).
- ๐ Archives won't open. โ Try another archiver (for example, 7-Zip for PC) or check the correct password.
Another common problem is syncing with Google Photos, and even if you hid the photos in the Xiaomi gallery, they can stay in the cloud.
- Open Google Photos.
- Go to Photos โ Albums โ Basket and clean it.
- Turn off autoboot: Settings โ Backup and Synchronization โ Off..
