Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone owners often face a lack of built-in storage, especially on budget models with 32 or 64GB of free space. The MIUI system accumulates a huge number of temporary files, and modern applications take up more gigabytes, turning overflow notifications into a daily routine.
Fortunately, most devices support MicroSD card installation, which allows you to significantly expand the available space, but simply inserting the drive is not enough β for games and programs to work correctly, you need to properly configure the file system and resource allocation.
In this article, weβll break down all the available ways to transfer data, from standard Android settings to advanced methods through ADB. Youβll learn how to safely move files and optimize your device without losing performance.
Preparation of the storage device and compatibility check
Before you start any data manipulation, you need to make sure that your memory card meets the requirements of the system. Read and write speed directly affects the speed of applications, so using old or cheap Class 4 cards can lead to lags and long downloads of programs.
It is recommended to use UHS-I or higher drives from trusted manufacturers such as Samsung, SanDisk or Kingston.Put the card into the slot when the phone is off, then turn the device on and wait for the notification of the new media to appear.
β οΈ Note: If there are important files on the memory card, copy them to your computer before formatting, as the system will completely clean the drive when you set up.
After installation, go to Settings β About Phone β Storage and click on your card name. You need to select the formatting option. The system will offer two options: use as portable storage or as internal memory.

For application installation, cards with a write speed of at least 30 Mb / s (marked A1 or A2 on the case) are best suited.
Formatting a map as an internal memory
To be able to install applications directly to an external drive, you need to format it as internal memory, a feature known as Adoptable Storage that encrypts the card and binds it to a particular device.
The integration process is as follows:
- π± Go to Settings. β Warehouse and select yours SD-map.
- πΎ Click Format and select Use as internal storage.
- π Wait for the process to be completed, which can take a few minutes depending on the volume.
- β Confirm the data transfer if the system prompts you to do so automatically.
Once the procedure is complete, some of the smartphoneβs internal memory will be reserved for system needs, and most applications will start writing to the card, which solves the problem of space shortage, but makes the card unreadable on other devices without re-formatting.
Manual transfer of installed applications
Even after formatting, not all programs automatically move to a new medium; in the MIUI shell, managing this process often requires manual intervention through the application management menu.
To transfer already installed programs, perform the following actions:
- Open Settings β Applications β All applications.
- Find the program you want (for example, a heavy game or a navigator).
- Press Warehouse.
- If the button is active, click Change and select SD-map.
It is worth noting that some system applications and critical services of Google do not support the transfer by developers, in which case the change button will be inactive or absent.

Using ADB to Expand Opportunities
If standard methods do not allow you to transfer the desired application, you can use debugging over USB and the ADB command line. This method gives deeper access to the file system, but requires caution.
First, activate the developer mode. To do this, go to Settings β About Phone and quickly click on the MIUI version seven times. Then, in advanced settings, turn on USB Debugging.
Connect your phone to your computer and enter a command to force the default installation location to change:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2A value of 2 indicates that external memory is a priority, but this method may not work well on newer versions of Android, where Google has restricted such capabilities for security reasons.
What if the ADB canβt see the phone?
Transfer of multimedia and application cache
The bulk of memory is often occupied not by the apps themselves, but by their cache and downloaded files: music in Spotify, offline maps in Yandex.Navigator or TV series in Netflix.
Use the built-in Explorer Explorer or third-party file managers (Total Commander, MiXplorer). Find Android/media folders or application root folders and move their content to the map.
The settings of the apps themselves also often have the option of choosing a save path. For example, in Telegram, the path changes to Settings β Data and memory β Path to files.
| Type of data | Where it's stored | Can I reschedule? | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | DCIM / Pictures | Yeah, totally. | No. |
| Cash messengers | Android/media | Yeah, with the loss of history. | High-pitched |
| Offline maps | Application folder | Yeah, through the settings. | Low. |
| System files | System / Data | No. | critical |
Possible problems and ways to solve them
Sometimes, after transferring applications, they can run slower or fly out, which is because the memory card reads faster than the built-in flash drive of a smartphone, and in such cases, it is better to return the application to internal memory.
There's also a mistake "SD-card is corrupted" or files disappear suddenly. This may indicate physical wear on the drive or problems with contact in the slot.
β οΈ Note: Do not remove the memory card while the phone is on unless the Safe Retrieval feature is activated β this may result in data loss or file system damage.
If the applications stopped updating, check if the space on the drive itself has run out. SD-The card over time reduces its performance, so every six months it is recommended to backup and format.

The speed of the application depends on the speed class of your SD-Maps; Cheap Cards Can Slow Down Games.
