Owners of Xiaomi smartphones with a MIUI shell or HyperOS often face a lack of built-in storage. Apps take up gigabytes and system files are growing, forcing the user to look for ways to expand the available space. One of the most effective solutions is to use a microSD memory card to store media files and, more importantly, to redirect downloads from the Google Play store.
Unfortunately, modern versions of Android and Chinese-made shells have significantly limited the ability to directly install applications on an external drive, in order to ensure security and stability, but there are proven methods to bypass these limitations and force the phone to default to save new files, music and even some applications to an external medium.
In this guide, we will take a look at all the ways you can configure your data storage paths, learn how to change system settings, what hidden features are available in the engineering menu, and how to format your drive properly to work as internal memory. Following the instructions will allow you to free up valuable gigabytes on the main drive without losing the functionality of the device.
Features of the MIUI and HyperOS file system
The MIUI shell that is installed on Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones has a specific file architecture. Unlike pure Android, it has hard-coded directory paths, and prioritizes internal memory for program installation. This provides speed but creates problems when filling up storage. Understanding these constraints is the first step to managing data properly.
Since Android 6.0, Adoptable Storage has been introduced, allowing you to combine an external card with internal memory. However, many manufacturers, including Xiaomi, often hide or completely block this feature in their firmware, because memory cards are usually slower than embedded eMMC or UFS chips, which can lead to slowdown of the interface.
β οΈ Warning: Forced activation of the memory unification function can lead to a decrease in the overall speed of the smartphone. UHS-I or higher to minimize delays.
However, for downloading files from the browser, saving photos and installing game cache, an external drive is ideal. The system allows you to flexibly configure paths for most standard operations without requiring root rights. It is only important to prepare the media correctly and choose the right formatting method depending on your goals.
Preparation SD-maps to work as a repository
Before trying to redirect downloads, you need to make sure that the memory card is properly formatted and recognized by the system. Insert a microSD into the slot of your Xiaomi device and wait for the notification of the connection of the new drive. If the card has been previously used in other devices, it is recommended to clear it to avoid file system conflicts.
To format, go to the settings menu. Find the storage section and select your card. The system will offer two uses: as portable storage or as internal memory. The first option makes it easy to transfer the card between devices, the second one encrypts the data and links it to a particular smartphone.
- π± Go to Settings. β The phone. β Storage (or simply Settings) β Storage in new versions).
- πΎ Choose yours. SD-map from the list of available disks.
- π§Ή Click the Format button and confirm the action by agreeing to the deletion of all data.
- π Select the type of use: Portable storage for files or Internal storage for system extension.
If you choose formatting as internal storage, the system will transfer some of the system data and allow some applications to be installed on the map. This process can take several minutes. Once completed, the phone may reboot. Make sure the battery is at least 50% charged to avoid damaging the file spreader in the event of a sudden shutdown.

Use SD Insight or similar to check the actual size and speed of your memory card before buying. Often cheap cards have understated specs, which will lead to write errors.
Changing the download path in Google Play and browser
The most frequent request of users is to transfer downloads from the app store. Unfortunately, Google Play itself does not have a built-in setting for choosing the default installation path in modern versions. It always seeks to install the application in internal memory. However, we can influence where the files that the applications download additionally (cache, maps, resources) are stored.
There is a service in MIUI to manage this process, go to settings and find Advanced Settings, there may be a Memory option where you can switch the write priority, and if you don't have one, which is common for global firmware versions, you'll need to use third-party file managers or change the settings of specific applications.
Consider setting up on the example of the Chrome browser or MI Browser, as it is through them that installation files are often downloaded APK. Open the browser settings, find the Downloads section and indicate the path to SD-All downloaded files will now be automatically saved to an external medium, freeing up space in the system partition.
For games with a lot of data (like PUBG or Genshin Impact), many of them ask themselves when you first install them where to save additional files. Carefully monitor the messages on the screen during installation. If the game does not ask a question, it uses internal memory by default, and you can only change this without special logins by manually moving the Android/obb and Android/data folders.
Using an engineering menu to change paths
For advanced Xiaomi users, access to a hidden engineering menu is available, where you can change the default system paths. This method does not require superuser rights, but requires caution (CIT) or by entering a code in a call.
Type ##6484## or ##3646633## in your phone app. If the code doesn't work (it's often blocked on global firmware), install the Engineer Mode MTK app from the Play Market. In the menu that opens, go to the Common tab, then select Storage Debugging or Default Write Disk.
In the list that opens, you'll see the options for choosing the main drive. Internal Storage is the default. Change the value to the SD Card. Then you need to reboot the device. This parameter causes the system to try to write the default data to an external medium if the application does not have a hard-coded path.
| Parameter | Description | Recommended value |
|---|---|---|
| Default Write Disk | Main recording disc | SD Card |
| Storage Debugging | Debugging the vault | Enable |
| Mass Storage | Storage mode | Auto / SD Card |
| Preload App | Preloading of applications | Internal (for speed) |
β οΈ Warning: Changing the system settings in the engineering menu can cause some applications to work in an unstable way. If after the reboot the phone starts to behave strangely, return the Default Write Disk value back to Internal Storage.
Transfer of installed applications to a memory card
Even if you can't automatically install it, many of the apps you already have can be moved manually, and this is true for social networks, messengers, and some games that have been allowed to do so, and moving them allows you to free up space by leaving only the necessary system files in the app's internal memory.
Go to Settings. β Annexes β All applications. Select the program you want from the list. If the developer has made portability possible, move to the button. SD-The card will be active. Press it and wait until the process is complete. If the button is gray or missing, porting for this application is impossible without root rights.
βοΈ Verification of portability
Itβs worth noting that widgets and some background services of displaced applications may run less stable or stop updating in real time, due to the power management features of MIUI, which can βsleepβ external drives to save battery life. Critical applications such as alarm clocks or messengers for work, it is better to leave on the internal drive.
You can use a built-in cleaning tool to mass-manage applications. Go to Security, select Cleanup, and find the application management section. The system will tell you which programs take up a lot of space and can be moved or deleted. It's a convenient way to quickly diagnose memory occupancy.
Working with cache and multimedia files
The bulk of the data in a smartphone is often not the apps themselves, but their cache and downloaded media files. Messengers like Telegram and WhatsApp have their own save path settings. Open the settings of a particular messenger, find the Data and Storage section and change the way you save photos and videos on the Internet. SD-map.
For navigation applications such as Yandex.Navigator or Google Maps, maps take up gigabytes of space. In the settings of these applications, you can also specify an external drive for storing offline maps, which significantly speeds up the navigator and keeps the internal memory free for system updates.
The secret to cleaning the cache
Regularly reviewing DCIM, Download and Bluetooth folders also helps keep order. Set up automatic sync with the cloud (Google Photos or Mi Cloud) with the option βFree up space.β Once uploaded to the cloud, the originals will be deleted from the phone, and only the files you choose to save manually will remain on the memory card.

Comprehensive approach: the combination of transferring media files, setting up paths in messengers and periodic cleaning of the cache give a better result than trying to install all applications on the map.
