Why download contacts from Xiaomi Cloud and when you need them
Xiaomi Cloud Cloud automatically syncs contacts, photos and other data between brand devices. However, there are situations when you need to manually export contacts – for example, when you switch to another smartphone (not Xiaomi), reset your phone to factory settings or create a backup in case of loss of the device. Without first saving contacts in a local file, you risk losing important numbers when you change your account or turn off sync.
Another common reason is that syncs are not working properly, and users sometimes find that contacts are lost after a MIUI update or duplicated due to conflicts between Google and Xiaomi accounts, in which case downloading an archive from the cloud helps to recover data manually, and exporting is useful if you want to transfer contacts to another service (for example, iCloud or Yandex) or print a phone book.
In this article, we will analyze all the current ways to download contacts from Xiaomi Cloud: through the mobile application, the web version of the cloud, as well as using a PC. Separately, we will focus on typical errors (for example, “Customs failed to synchronize contacts”) and how to fix them.
Method 1: Export contacts via the Xiaomi Cloud app on your smartphone
The easiest method is to use the official Mi Cloud app, pre-installed on all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones, which is suitable for devices on MIUI 12-14 and does not require a computer connection. Importantly, before you start, make sure that your phone is connected to the Internet (preferably via Wi-Fi to avoid the consumption of mobile traffic).
Step instructions:
- 📱 Open the "Mi Cloud" app, if it's not on the home screen, search the system.
- 🔒 Sign in to the same Xiaomi account that your contacts are linked to. If you forget your password, restore it via mi.com.
Check your internet connection
Make sure that contact sync is enabled in Mi Cloud settings
Free up space in your phone’s memory (a.vcf file can weigh up to 50MB)
Remember the folder where you save the file-->
The finished.vcf file can be opened in any contact manager (including the standard Google Contacts app), mailed or uploaded to another cloud. Please note that if you have duplicate contacts in Xiaomi Cloud, the exported file will save all copies – they will have to be manually cleaned.
💡
If the exported file does not contain photos of contacts, try to enable the option “Sync photos” in the Mi Cloud settings before exporting.
Method 2: Download contacts through the web version of Xiaomi Cloud
If you don't have access to a Xiaomi smartphone (for example, it's broken or lost), contacts can be downloaded through the browser version of the cloud, which works on any device - a PC, Mac, tablet or even someone else's phone, the main condition is to remember the username and password from your Mi Account.
Step-by-step:
- Open your browser and go to i.mi.com (the official Xiaomi Cloud portal).
- Sign in by entering email/phone and password. If two-factor authentication is enabled, confirm the sign-in via SMS or Mi Security app.
- In the main menu, select the Contacts (or Contacts) tab.
In the web version, additional options are available:
- 🔍 Contact search is convenient if you only need to export a part of the numbers.
- 🗑️ Removing duplicates – the tool automatically finds and combines repeated records.
- 📥 Contact Import – You can upload a previously saved.vcf file back to the cloud.
What to do if the Xiaomi Cloud web version does not open?
A downloaded.vcf file can be immediately imported into Google Contacts, Outlook, or another service. If the file weighs more than 100MB (which is unlikely for contacts), break it down using online tools like VCF Splitter.
Method 3: Synchronize your contacts with your Google Account (alternative method)
If you don’t need to download contacts to a file, but just transfer them to another service, you can use synchronization with Google, which is suitable for users who plan to switch to a smartphone not from Xiaomi (for example, Samsung or iPhone), the advantage of the method is automatic update of contacts when changes to Xiaomi Cloud.
How to set up synchronization:
- Open Settings → Accounts and sync on your Xiaomi smartphone.
- Add a Google Account (if not) or select an existing one.
- Activate the slider opposite the Contacts** in the Synchronization section.
- Return to Settings → Applications → Application Management → Contacts.
- Select Contacts to Display and set a priority for Google (this will prevent duplicate entries).
After that, all contacts from Xiaomi Cloud are automatically copied to Google Contacts to check the result:
- 🌐 Go to contacts.google.com.
- 🔍 Make sure all numbers and names are displayed correctly.
- 📥 If necessary, export contacts from there to a.vcf or.csv file.

Important: If you turn off sync with Google after the transfer, contacts in Xiaomi Cloud will remain unchanged, and new records will only be saved to Google. This method is not suitable for one-time export - it is designed for constant sync.
Method 4: Exporting contacts to PCs via Mi PC Suite
For users who prefer to work from a computer, Xiaomi offers the official Mi PC Suite utility, which allows you to manage smartphone data, including contacts, messages and multimedia, which is convenient if you want to download contacts in a format compatible with Outlook or Excel (for example,.csv).
Instructions for using Mi PC Suite:
- Download and install Mi PC Suite from the official website (available for Windows 7/10/11).
- Connect your smartphone to your PC through USB-cable (it is recommended to use the original cable for stable connection).
- Turn on the phone mode "File Transfer"** (notification will appear in the curtain after connecting).
- Run the Mi PC Suite and wait for the program to identify the device.
- Go to the “Contacts” section.
| File format | Advantages | Deficiencies |
|---|---|---|
| .vcf | Universal format, supported by all smartphones and email clients | Inconvenient for manual editing (special programs required) |
| .csv | You can open in Excel or Google Sheets for mass editing | When importing back, photos of contacts may be lost. |
| .xls | Convenient for data analysis (e.g. group filtering) | Not all services support imports from Excel |
If the Mi PC Suite doesn’t recognize your smartphone, try:
- 🔄 Reinstall Xiaomi drivers through the official website.
- 🔌 Use the other USB-port (preferably) USB 3.0).
- 📱 Include in the settings of the phone "Debugging by USB» (in the section "For developers»).
💡
Mi PC Suite is the only official way to export contacts in Excel (.xls) format, which is convenient for business users.
Typical errors and their solutions
When working with Xiaomi Cloud, users often face problems synchronizing or exporting contacts, and consider the most common errors and ways to fix them.
Error 1: “Not synchronizing contacts”
This problem usually arises from:
- 📶 Unstable Internet connection – check for Wi-Fi or mobile network connection.
- ⏳ Server crashes – visit Downdetector to see if Xiaomi Cloud is lying.
- 🔄 Account Conflict – If you have both Google and Xiaomi accounts, turn off synchronizing contacts in one of them.
⚠️ Note: If sync doesn’t work for more than a day, try removing your Xiaomi account from your phone’s settings and adding it again!
Error 2: Exported file is empty or corrupted
Causes and solutions:
- 📂 Not enough space on the device – free up memory and repeat export.
- 🔍 Filters in Mi Cloud – Check if group contacts are hidden (e.g., Workers or Family»).
- 📥 Download failure – download the file again using another browser.
Error 3: Duplicate contacts after importation
This happens if you have imported the same.vcf file several times.
- Open Google Contacts or Mi Contacts.
- Select “Find and combine duplicates”**.
- Confirm the merger of the same records.
If the automatic connection doesn’t work, use third-party apps like Contacts Optimizer (available on Google Play).
Security and Privacy: What You Need to Know
When working with contacts in Xiaomi Cloud, it is important to keep in mind the protection of personal data.
- 🔐 Two-factor authentication (2FA) — Enable it in your Mi Account settings to prevent unauthorized access.
- 📡 Public Wi-Fi Networks – Avoid logging into Xiaomi Cloud via open access points (risk of data interception).
- 🗃️ Local backups – store the.vcf file not only in the cloud but also on a physical medium (such as a flash drive).
- 🚫 Third-party services – Do not upload contacts to unknown sites for “optimization” or “cleaning up».
If you are selling or transferring your Xiaomi smartphone to another person, make sure to follow these steps:
- Make a backup of your contacts (as described above).
- Delete your Xiaomi account in your phone settings (Settings → Accounts → Mi Account → Delete your account).
- Perform a reset to factory settings (Settings → About phone → Reset settings).
⚠️ Note: After deleting your Xiaomi account, all data from Mi Cloud (including contacts, photos and notes) will be deleted from the device!
If you suspect that your Mi Account has been hacked, immediately:
- Change your password at account.xiaomi.com.
- Turn off all active sessions in the security settings.
- Check the activity log for suspicious logins.
