Why Xiaomi Backup on PC is Not a Luxury, Itβs a Necessity
Smartphone data loss is a situation that almost every user has experienced. A virus attack, accidental formatting, device theft, or a simple firmware failure can take away photos, correspondence, and important documents overnight. Xiaomi, despite its built-in backup tools, does not always guarantee 100% security when recovering information through the cloud, which is why a full backup on a computer remains the most reliable way to protect data.
Unlike cloud services, local copying on a PC gives you complete control over files: no volume limits, no extra space, and the recovery speed depends only on your hardware. This is especially true for owners of flagship Xiaomi 13/14 series or Redmi Note 12, where the amount of user data can exceed 100 GB. But how to make such a backup correctly so as not to lose a megabyte? In this guide, all the current methods with the latest updates MIUI 14/15.
Method 1: Official backup via Mi PC Suite (for Windows)
Mi PC Suite is Xiaomiβs proprietary software that allows you to backup with minimal settings. The program automatically determines the phone model (from Redmi 9A to Xiaomi 14 Ultra) and offers optimal backup options. The main advantage is that it supports password encryption, which is critical when storing sensitive data.
To take advantage of this method:
- π₯ Download the latest version of Mi PC Suite from the official website (avoid third-party sources - the risk of catching a virus).
- π Connect your phone to your PC through the original USB-cable (use the port) USB 3.0 to speed up the process).
- π On the phone, allow access to the data in the window that appears USB-debugging (if the request does not appear, check the developer settings).
- πΎ In the program, select the Backup section. β specify the folder to save (preferably on the system disk C: do not store - there may not be enough space).

Charge your phone at least 50% |
Disable VPNs and firewalls |
Close background applications on PC-->
The copying process will take 10 to 40 minutes depending on the amount of data. Importantly, if the backup is interrupted, the restart will start from the beginning β so don't turn off the cable or restart the PC. Once completed, the program will generate a file with the.mbk extension, which can only be restored through the Mi PC Suite.

If the Mi PC Suite doesnβt see the phone, try changing USB connectivity mode to File Transfer (MTP) in the smartphone notification curtain.
Method 2: Manual backup via ADB (for power users)
For those who donβt trust proprietary utilities or need to selectively copy system partitions, Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is a good option, requiring minimal command line knowledge but full control over the process, such as copying only /data/app (installed apps) or /sdcard/DCIM (photos and videos), saving disk space.
Instructions:
- Install ADB and Fastboot Tools from Google.
- Activate Developer Mode on Xiaomi: go to Settings β About Phone β 7 times tap on the MIUI version.
What do flags mean in the ADB team?
Please note: some applications (e.g. banking) may block the reservation of their data through the ADB. In this case, the logs will be a warning Backup failed for [package_name]. Also backup through ADB It does not capture data from protected folders. MIUI (For example, "Black List" or "Notes").
β οΈ Note:.ab file created through ADB, You can't open it as an archive. You'll need an adb restore command to recover it.
Method 3: Manually copy files (for beginners)
If you donβt need system settings and only copy personal files (photos, music, documents), you can do without specialized software, which works on all Xiaomi models, including POCO and Black Shark, and does not require root rights.
Algorithm of action:
- Connect your phone to your PC through USB-cable.
- In the phone notification curtain, select File Transfer (MTP) mode.
- On your computer, open This computer β find the Xiaomi device in the Portable Devices section.
- Copy the right folders: π· DCIM β photo-and-video π΅ Music, Movies, Downloads β Multimedia and Downloads π Documents - Word files, PDF, Excel π± Android/data β save games (requires root for full access)
Up to 5G.|
5-20 GB |
20 GB |
More than 50GB-->
The main advantage of this method is speed: it takes about 15-20 minutes to copy 30 GB of photos (using USB 3.0). However, there are disadvantages: system settings, SMS and call log will not be saved this way, you will need to additionally use Google Account or third-party applications like SMS Backup & Restore to back up them.
Method 4: Backup via TWRP (for sewers)
If your Xiaomi is unlocked and has a custom TWRP recap, you can create a complete system image, including the boot partition and application data, which is the only way to ensure that the phone is restored to its exact state at the time of the backup β even if you were refashioning to another version of MIUI.
Step-by-step:
- Load the phone into TWRP mode (usually by clamping Power + Volume up).
- Go to the Backup section.
- Check the sections: π Boot - Boot section π± System - System files ποΈ Data - user data π§ EFS β IMEI Network settings (critical for reconnection!)
Select a storage location (internal memory or storage). SD-map) and start the process.
Backup files will have a.tar extension and weigh between 8GB and 20GB (depending on the model) and can be copied to a PC for long-term storage.Warning: Restore via TWRP will reset all current data on the phone!
β οΈ Note: Some new Xiaomi models (e.g. Xiaomi) 13T or Redmi K60) Protected against changing the section EFS. Incorrect recovery of this section may result in loss of IMEI!
Method 5: Cloud + PC (Hybrid Method)
If you don't want to store all the data on your hard drive, but you just have to rely on the cloud, you can combine both.
- π± Photos and Videos β sync with Google Photos (unlimited space for compressed files).
- π Documents β Manually copy to PC (as in Method 3).
- βοΈ Settings and apps β Backup via Mi Account (enable option in Settings) β Xiaomi account β Cloud. β Backup).
- π¬ Correspondence β export via Telegram Desktop or WhatsApp Web.
This approach distributes the workload: critical data (like work documents) is stored locally, and the rest is in the cloud, and the downside is that it takes several steps to fully recover, but you are protected from data loss if one of the storages fails.
| Method | Speed. | Full backup | Difficulty | Need root? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mi PC Suite | Medium | High (except for some system files) | Low. | No. |
| ADB | Low. | Medium (depending on teams) | Tall. | No. |
| Manual copying | Tall. | Low (user files only) | Low. | No. |
| TWRP | Low. | Maximum (full image of the system) | Tall. | Yes. |
| Hybrid | Different. | Tall. | Medium | No. |
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
Even when following instructions, users often face problems, and here are the most common ones and ways to fix them:
1 Mi PC Suite doesn't see the phone
- π Check the cable β use the original from Xiaomi (cheap analogues may not support data transfer).
- π Reinstall drivers: download Mi USB Driver and install manually.
- π± On the phone, turn on the debugging. USB and select File Transfer Mode (MTP).
2. ADB issues a "device unauthorized" error
That means the phone doesn't trust your PC.
- Turn it off and plug it back in. USB-cable.
- On the phone in the window that appears, Allow debugging? tick Always allow from this computer.
- If the window doesnβt appear, check to see if the antivirus (such as Avast or Kaspersky) is blocking access.
3. backup via TWRP takes up too much space
By default, TWRP creates uncompressed images to reduce the size:
- π¦ In the settings TWRP Enable the Compression option (compression).
- ποΈ Eliminate unnecessary partitions (such as Cache or Vendor).
- πΎ Break the backup into pieces: First save Data, then System.
π‘
If the backup is interrupted by half, don't continue it -- delete the incomplete file and start over. Partially copied data can lead to recovery errors.
