Xiaomi Redmi 9
microSD cards
Many users face problems: the phone does not recognize the card, gives out a formatting error or simply does not see it in the file manager, most often due to improper installation, incompatible format or mechanical damage to the slot, we will show how to avoid these errors and make the most of the additional space for photos, videos and applications.
Unlike flagship models, where a memory card slot is often paired with a SIM tray, Redmi 9 uses a hybrid slot. This means that you can use either two nano-SIMs or one SIM + microSD at the same time. Keep this in mind before buying a card - if two SIMs are critical to you, expanding memory will become impossible without sacrifices.

1. Which memory card to choose for Xiaomi Redmi 9
Not every microSD is right for your smartphone. Redmi 9 supports microSDXC memory cards up to 512 GB (officially stated up to 256 GB, but tests show performance and 512 GB from some manufacturers).
Key card requirements:
- πΉ Speed class: minimum Class 10 (UHS-I U1), videotape 4K β U3 or V30
- πΉ File system format: exFAT (for cards) >32 GB) or FAT32 (32GB)
- πΉ Manufacturer: SanDisk, Samsung brands are recommended EVO, Kingston (cheap no-name cards are often forged)
Note that if you plan to use the card as internal memory (for installing applications), its speed should be at least UHS-I U1. Otherwise, the applications will slow down or refuse to install at all.
| Characteristics | Minimum requirements | Recommended option |
|---|---|---|
| Volume. | up to 512GB | 128β256 GB (optimal for price/volume) |
| Class speed | Class 10 (U1) | UHS-I U3 / V30 (for 4K-video) |
| File system | FAT32 (up to 32 GB), exFAT (above) | exFAT (supports files >4 GB) |
| Manufacturer | Any known brand. | SanDisk Ultra, Samsung EVO Plus |
β οΈ Note: MicroSDHC (up to 32GB) and microSDXC (over 64GB) memory cards are visually identical, but Redmi 9 doesn't support the outdated microSD standard (up to 2GB!
2.Where is the memory card slot in Redmi 9
In Xiaomi Redmi 9 slot memory card and SIM-It's on the left end of the case, and it's hidden under a little plastic cover that you have to remove with a special tool called a paper clip. SIM (comes complete with a phone).
If you lose a paper clip, any thin metal needle or pin will do, the main thing is not to use too sharp objects, so as not to damage the O-ring (it protects the slot from dust and moisture).
How to open the tray:
- Turn off your phone (but not necessarily).
- Find a small hole on the left side next to the volume buttons.
- Put the paperclip in the hole before clicking - the tray will be pushed out a little.
- Carefully pull the tray over yourself and remove it completely.
In the tray you will see two nests:
- π± Upper - for nano-SIM 1
- π± Medium β for nano-SIM 2 or microSD (hybrid slot!)
What if the tray is jammed?
3. Step-by-step instruction: how to insert a memory card
Now, to the installation process itself, follow the instructions carefully so as not to damage the contacts of the card or slot.
Step 1: Preparation of the memory card
- π οΈ If the card is new, unpack it without touching your fingers (fat and sweat can worsen contact).
- π If the card has already been used, back up the data as the phone may require formatting.
Step 2: Installation of the card in the tray
- Place the tray on a flat surface with contacts upwards.
- If you use one SIM + microSD, insert the nano-SIM into the top socket and the memory card into the middle socket (metal contacts down).
- If you only need a memory card (without SIM), insert it into the middle socket.
- Make sure the card sits tightly in the slots and does not protrude beyond the edges of the tray.
Step 3: Return the tray to the phone

| Internal memory. | β You can install applications.β Expands the main storage | β The map cannot be removed without being reset.β Slower than internal memory |
Important: If you've chosen internal memory mode, you can't just take the card out and paste it into another phone or computer, and the system will encrypt the data and it will become unavailable on other devices. β Memory. β SD-map β Extract.
π‘
If you often connect your phone to your computer to transfer files, it is better to use the card as a portable drive. In internal memory mode, access to it via USB will be limited.
Typical problems and their solutions
Even if you install the memory card correctly, there can be errors, and let's look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
Problem 1: The phone doesn't see the memory card
- π Check the contacts: remove the map and inspect it for contamination or damage.
- π Restart your phone β sometimes the system doesnβt recognize the card immediately after installation.
- π οΈ Check the slot: insert the card into another phone or computer (through the card reader). If it does not work everywhere, the card is faulty.
Problem 2: The map needs formatting
- πΎ Back up your data as formatting will remove everything from the card.
- π§ Format the card via phone: Settings β Memory. β SD-map β Format.
- π₯οΈ If the phone refuses to format, do so via your computer (select exFAT file system).
Problem 3: The card is slow or slow
- β‘ Check the card speed class β applications require a minimum UHS-I U1.
- ποΈ Clean the card of unnecessary files (especially if it is filled with more than 90%).
- π Try reconnecting the card: Remove it, restart the phone and paste it back in.
β οΈ Warning: If your phone becomes very slow after formatting your card as internal memory, go back to portable storage mode. Cheap or slow cards are not designed to install applications and can seriously slow down your system.
π‘
If the memory card is no longer detectable after a phone drop or moisture hits, do not try to remove it yourself - contact the service center.
6. How to transfer data to a memory card
Once you have successfully installed the card, you can free up the phone's internal memory by transferring photos, videos and other files to it, and you can do this in a number of ways.
Method 1: Through a File Manager
- Open the Files app (or any other file manager).
- Go to the folder with the files you want to transfer (for example, DCIM β Camera for photo).
- Select files with a long tap, click "More" β "Move".
- Choose. SD-map and specify the target folder.
Method 2: Automatically save to the map
To make sure that new photos and videos are immediately saved to the memory card:
- Open the Camera app.
- Press on. βοΈ "Settings" (cog in the top corner).
- Select "Camera Memory" β "SD-map".
Method 3: Application portability (for internal memory only)
If the card is configured as an internal memory:
- Go to Settings β Applications β All applications.
- Select the application you want to transfer.
- Press "Storage" β "Change" β "SD-map".
Note that not all applications support memory card porting. System applications and some games (such as PUBG Mobile or Genshin Impact) may refuse to work with an external drive.
7 How to safely remove the memory card
Failure to remove the memory card by the rules can lead to data loss or damage to the file system.
If the card is used as a portable drive:
- Open the Settings. β Memory. β SD-map.
- Click "Extract" (or "Safe Retrieval").
- Wait for the notice "SD-map can be safely removed".
- Remove the card tray.
If the card is used as an internal memory:
- π Restart your phone before retrieving (this will reduce the risk of data corruption).
- π Do not remove the card while applications are running or file transfers!
If you retrieve the card without safely shutting down and it stops working, try:
- Put it back in and wait for the phone to check for errors.
- Connect to your computer and run the verification through Properties β Service β Check (Windows).
π‘
If you frequently retrieve your memory card, turn off automatic backups in apps (like WhatsApp or Telegram) to prevent data loss from being suddenly retrieved.
