Xiaomi Redmi smartphones are known for their price-performance ratio, but even the most powerful models eventually start to slow down, because of a clogged system: residual application files, cache, duplicate photos and unnecessary MIUI data. According to our tests, after a year of active use, the garbage volume on the Redmi Note 12 reaches 8-12 GB, and the speed of launching applications drops by 30-40%.
Many users mistakenly believe that it is enough to click โCleanโ in the settings โ but this removes only the tip of the iceberg. For example, the /data/dalvik-cache system cache and temporary com.xiaomi.mipicks files are not cleaned by standard means, although they take up to 3 GB. In this article, 7 proven cleaning methods, from basic to advanced, taking into account the features of MIUI 14/15 and the new Redmi 13C/Note 13 Pro+ models.
We're not going to advise "just reinstall the firmware" -- this is a last resort -- instead, we're going to figure out how to safely delete unnecessary data without affecting personal files, and what tools are best for that, and all of them are tested on Redmi 10, Note 11 Pro, 12R and are relevant for 2026.
1. Built-in tools MIUI: What can be cleaned without third-party programs
The manufacturer has put some optimization utilities in MIUI, but most users don't use them, and let's start with the simplest one, the built-in Cleaner, and open it up:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Cleaner.
- Click Scan and wait for analysis (usually 10-20 seconds).
- Pay attention to the โJunkโ, โCashโ and โBig Filesโ sections.
Important: Don't manually clean up the Downloads section - it can store important documents (like tickets or scans). Instead, sort files by date and only delete files older than 6 months. Our Redmi Note 12 Pro tests have 4.7GB of unnecessary APKs and archives in this section.
Another useful tool is battery and performance:
- ๐ Battery Optimization: Disables background activity of rarely used applications (saves up to 15% charge).
- ๐ System Acceleration: Closes the frozen processes and clears the RAM.
- ๐ Usage statistics: Shows which applications are most loading the processor.
โ ๏ธ Note: Do not use the Deep Clean feature in the Cleaner โ it deletes authorization data in some applications (for example, in Mi Fit or banking services), which leads to the need to re-enter logins and passwords.
2.Cleaning the application cache: what data can be deleted without risk
Cache speeds up programs, but over time grows to giant sizes, for example, YouTube cache on Redmi 11 Prime after six months of use took 1.2 GB, and TikTok โ 2.8 GB.
Method 1: One annex
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Select a program (such as Facebook) and click on Storage.
- Tap โClear Cacheโ (not to be confused with โClear Dataโ โ it will remove all settings!).
Method 2: Mass cleaning (for MIUI 14+)
- Go to Settings โ Memory โ Cash applications.
- Click โCleanโ โ this will remove the cache of all applications at once.
Which apps are the most popular? In our experience, the leaders of the anti-rankings are:
| Annex | Average cache size (over 6 months) | Can you clean it without consequences? |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 2.5โ3.2 GB | Yeah, but the videos will be loaded longer. |
| YouTube | 0.8โ1.5 GB | Yeah, it doesn't affect your viewing history. |
| Facebook/Instagram | 1.0โ1.8 GB | Yeah, but the tape will be updated on the next launch. |
| Mi Video | 0.5โ1.2 GB | Yes, unless you use an offline view. |
| Google Play Services | 0.3โ0.7 GB | No, it may disrupt Googleโs services. |
๐ก
If after cleaning the cache, the application began to work slower, restart the smartphone - this will reset the background processes and accelerate the re-loading of data.
3. System garbage removal: hidden folders and unnecessary files
Even after cleaning the cache, temporary files remain in the system that are not visible through standard Explorer. To delete them, you will need a file manager with root permissions (for example, MiXplorer or Solid Explorer).
Step 1: Enable the display of hidden files
- Open the MiXplorer and tap three dots in the upper right corner.
- Select โSettings โ Display โ Show hidden filesโ.
Step 2: Remove unnecessary folders (for power users only!)
/data/local/tmp # Temporary update files
/cache # Cache system (cleared automatically when restarted)
/data/dalvik-cache # Cash Dalvik (requires root rights)
/sdcard/MIUI/debug_log # Error Logs (can be deleted completely)
/sdcard/Download/.* # Hidden files in downloadsโ ๏ธ Attention: Do not delete folders /data/app and /system โ If you're in doubt, you'd better skip this step.
Step 3: Cleaning the thumbnails folder
This folder stores thumbnails of photos and videos that have long since been deleted. 10C After a year of use, it has been used. 1,3 GB of unnecessary files: /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails
Make a backup copy of important data|Check the battery charge (minimum 50%)|Disable automatic update of applications|Close all operational programmes-->
4.Outload optimization: why the phone brakes after turning on
One of the main reasons for slow work is the autoload of applications, and many programs (especially Chinese ones like Mi Browser or GetApps) are launched when you turn on your phone and hang in the background, consuming memory, and you can turn them off like this:
Method 1: Through the MIUI settings
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Select an app (such as Mi Music) and tap โStopโ.
- Turn off the "Allow Auto Start" slider.
Method 2: Using Greenify (for advanced)
This app freezes unnecessary services, preventing them from running.
- ๐ Add to the list Facebook, Mi Video, Clean Master and other โgluttonousโ programs.
- ๐ต Press Hibernate โ they will stop working in the background.
What apps can you turn off without risk? Here's our checklist for Redmi:
- โ Mi Browser, Mi Music, Mi Video โ Xiaomiโs standard apps that duplicate Googleโs features.
- โ GetApps, Mi Pay โ if you do not use a branded store and payment system.
- โ Google Play Services, Mi Security โ Disabling will cause system errors.
๐ก
Turning off autoboot for 5-7 unnecessary applications increases free RAM by 200-400 MB, which is especially noticeable on Redmi with 4 GB of RAM.
5.Reset partition cache: when it really needs to
If the phone has become very slow after the update or overheats often, resetting the recovery partition cache will help. This method does not delete personal data, but requires rebooting to a special mode. 12/13:
Step 1: Turn off the phone and press the combination:
- For most models: Power button + Volume up.
- For Redmi 10A/10C: Power button + Volume up + Volume down.
Step 2: On the recovery menu:
- Select Wipe & Reset โ Wipe Cache (control โ volume buttons, choice โ power button).
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion (it will take 1-2 minutes).
- Reboot your phone (Reboot โ System)
โ ๏ธ Warning: Do not confuse Wipe Cache with Wipe Data - the second option will completely reset the phone to factory settings! also do not interrupt the cleaning process - this can lead to a cyclical restart of the device.
After this procedure, the system will reassemble the cache, so the first 5-10 minutes of the phone can run slower than usual. That's normal.
What if the phone does not turn on after resetting the cache?
6. Advanced cleaning: ADB-Teams for experienced users
If standard methods donโt work, you can use ADB (Android Debug Bridge), a debugging tool that allows you to remove system debris that is not available through the interface, which is suitable for Redmi on MIUI 12-15.
Step 1: Install ADB on PC
- Download Platform Tools from Google.
- Unpack the archive in the folder C:\adb.
- Turn on the phone Debugging over USB (Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version โ tap 7 times, then go back to Additional โ For developers).
Step 2: Connect your phone and execute commands
Open the Command Prompt in the adb folder and enter it in turn:
adb devices # Checking the connection
adb shell pm trim-caches 1G # Cache Cleanup of all applications (1GB โ threshold)
adb shell rm -rf /data/local/tmp/* # Delete temporary files
adb shell rm -rf /data/system/package_cache/* # Clearing packet cacheStep 3: Reset the device
After completing the commands, enter:
adb rebootโ ๏ธ Note: Do not use the command adb shell rm -rf /data/dalvik-cache/* If you don't have root rights, it can crash the system, and don't clean the folder. /data/app โ it stores the installed applications.
๐ก
If so, ADB-Cleaning the phone is faster, but some apps (like Google Maps) take a long time to load data, just reinstall it through the Play Market.
7.Extreme measures: reset to factory settings without data loss
If none of these methods work, you'll have to do hard reset, which is a complete reset of your phone, but before you do that, you can try a soft reset that saves photos and documents but removes settings and apps.
Method 1: Soft reset (saves media files)
- Go to Settings โ About the phone โ Reset settings.
- Select โResetโ (not โDelete all data!โ).
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot.
Method 2: Complete reset (remove everything)
If the soft reset didnโt help, run Wipe Data through recovery:
- Turn off the phone and press Power + Volume up.
- Choose Wipe Data โ Wipe All Data.
- After resetting, the phone will be like new โ you will need to reset.
How to prepare for the reset:
- ๐ Make a backup copy through Settings โ Google โ Backup.
- ๐ Copy photos on PC or in the cloud (Google Photos, Mi Cloud).
- ๐ Write down logins/passwords from important accounts (they will disappear!).
After reset, donโt restore data from the backup immediately โ check the speed of the clean system first. 80% of the time, the brakes disappear due to old settings or conflicting applications.
