Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones often face a shortage of internal storage, when in fact gigabytes can simply be reserved for deleted files. The Android system, as well as the proprietary MIUI shell or the new HyperOS, are equipped with a security mechanism that does not delete data instantly, but moves it to a special buffer section. This section, known as the Recycle Bin, allows you to recover accidentally erased pictures or documents for 30 days, but still occupies a valuable place in the deviceβs memory.
Many users donβt realize that after a standard deletion procedure, files donβt disappear physically until the storage is completely cleaned. Freeing up space requires additional actions in the Gallery, Explorer or Files system applications. Ignoring this procedure can cause the phone to start running slower and notifications of memory shortages will appear at the most inopportune time.
In this article, we will take a look at all the ways available to clean up the clipboard on Xiaomi devices, learn how to selectively delete data, clean the storage completely and configure automatic deletion so that your smartphone always works quickly and efficiently.
The principle of the basket in the shell of MIUI and HyperOS
The file system architecture in Xiaomi smartphones is designed so that standard file deletion is only logical. When you press the delete button in any system application, the operating system marks the file space as available for overwriting, but the data itself remains on the disk until it is physically erased. MIUI and HyperOS use a dedicated partition of memory where these "remote" objects are placed for temporary storage.
This is done to protect against the accidental loss of important information. The files in this buffer are usually stored for 30 days, after which the system automatically erases them, starting with the oldest ones. However, if you delete a large video or a package of photos, they will take up space for all those 30 days unless you take action to force them to be deleted.
β οΈ Attention: Physically removing files from the recycle bin makes it impossible to recover them as standard means. Before cleaning, make sure that there is nothing important among the objects being deleted.
It's important to understand that the Recycle Bin is not a single system storage for all applications at once. Every system service β whether it's a gallery, voice recorder or file manager β has its own isolated buffer, so cleaning the Recycle Bin in the gallery won't free up space occupied by deleted files in the Downloads folder.
Technical details of the file system
Cleaning the basket in the Gallery appendix
The most common memory-scarcity scenario involves media content: photos and videos. Xiaomiβs Gallery app has its own built-in remote-storage album that works independently of other system storage, and you need to open the app and go to the Albums section to access it.
Scroll down the album list, and you'll find Deleted, and inside this section, you'll find all the photos and videos you've deleted in the last 30 days, and you'll see the time you have left before they're automatically destroyed by the system.
- πΈ Open the Gallery app and go to the Albums tab at the bottom of the screen.
- ποΈ Find and click on the Deleted folder located at the bottom of the album list.
- β For a complete cleanup, click the βCleanβ button or select βDelete Allβ from the menu (three dots in the corner).
- π For selective removal, pinch your finger in one photo, then mark the rest and click the basket icon.
Note that if you synced the gallery with the Xiaomi Cloud or Google Photos cloud, deleted files can also be stored in cloud services. Cleaning the local cart on your phone does not always instantly reflect in the cloud, and vice versa. Sync can bring deleted files back if you do not turn this feature off.

Delete files through System Explorer
For working with documents, APK-Files, archives and other data that are not media files, the system uses the Explorer application (or Files), the mechanism of the basket is implemented similar to a gallery, but has its own navigation features. The interface may differ depending on the shell version, but the logic remains the same.
With the newer versions of HyperOS and MIUI 14, the interface is more minimal. To find a shopping cart, you need to look at the top of the screen or the side menu. In some versions of the system, access to deleted files is hidden under the profile icon or settings menu.
β οΈ Note: Files deleted through third-party file managers (e.g., Total Commander or ES File Explorer, may not fall into the system basket Xiaomi, and remove immediately or get into the basket of a particular application-conductor.
The cleaning process is also divided into mass and selective, so you can sort files by deletion date to find the oldest or the latest, which is convenient if you accidentally deleted a work document a couple of minutes ago and want to return it, or vice versa, want to delete the old application installers.
Cleaning the cart in Google Photos and cloud services
Many Xiaomi users use Google Photos by default to store media files. It is important to understand that this service has its own shopping cart that is not associated with the Xiaomi system gallery. Even if you cleared the Deleted in the MIUI gallery, space in the Google cloud and on the account can remain occupied.
To clear Google's storage, open the Google Photos app. Go to the Library section in the lower right corner, then select Recycle Bin. Here, files are stored for 60 days if it's a camera photo, or 30 days for the rest of the files, and the cleanup here is instantaneous and frees up space on your Google account.
Also, check the Mi Cloud. If you have sync enabled, deleted files can be duplicated there. Go to your Mi Account settings, select Mi Cloud, and check the Gallery or Files section, and deleting from there also requires separate confirmation.
Automatic cleaning and storage settings
Modern versions of Xiaomi firmware have introduced an automatic shopping cart cleaner that helps keep the cart in order without user intervention, but by default it can be set to a maximum shelf life (30 days), and you can change these settings to make room faster.
To set up, go to Settings on your phone, then select About Phone or Advanced Settings (depending on the version of MIUI). Find the storage or memory section. Some versions have a separate Memory Cleanup option where you can set auto-delete options.
And you should also look at the Safety app, which is a green lightning icon, and inside it is a Cleanup tool, and if you click on it, it will prompt you to remove the garbage, including the contents of the application baskets, which is the fastest way to do a comprehensive cleaning.
| Type of data | Positioning of the basket | Storage period | Cleaning method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Gallery β Albums β Deleted | 30 days | Manual or car |
| Documents | Conductor β Remotely | 30 days | Manually. |
| Google Photo | Library β Basket | 60/30 days | In the Google appendix |
| Downloads. | The conductor β Downloads | No (right away) | Deletion of the file |

Using the built-in Security tool allows you to clean the baskets of all system applications with one click, which saves time.
Problems in cleaning and restoring data
Sometimes users are faced with a situation where the shopping cart is not cleaned, the deletion process is hanging or the space is not released even after completing all the actions. This can be due to an error in indexing media files or a malfunction of the system cache.
If you cleaned the cart by mistake, you can't recover it with standard methods, but if you've had sync enabled, you can find files in the cloud, and there are some special programs for data recovery, but their performance on Android with superuser rights (Root) is extremely low because of encryption.
To prevent such situations, it is recommended to regularly back up important data to an external hard drive or to a reliable cloud storage.

To speed up the system after a mass cleaning of the basket, it is recommended to restart the smartphone, which will allow the system to recalculate the free memory index.
