Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones face a shortage of internal storage sooner or later. MIUI and HyperOS take up a significant amount of space, and modern applications are becoming heavier, requiring gigabytes of free space to install and caching data. When notifications of space shortages begin to appear constantly, the only logical solution seems to be using a microSD card. However, unlike older versions of Android, modern shells do not allow you to simply move a program with a single click.
This is led by Google’s security policy, which restricts direct access to external drives, which is designed to protect user data and stability. However, there are proven methods to circumvent these restrictions, allowing you to effectively use the external card as a full extension of internal memory, in this guide we will examine all the available methods, from standard settings to advanced manipulation through debugging on USB.
Before you take action, you need to understand the risks and the features of the process. Data transfer is not just copying files, but changing the structure of the system. Wrong actions can lead to data loss or unstable operation of individual programs. So it is important to carefully study each step and choose the method that best suits your device model and level of technical training.
Preparation of memory card and device for work
The first and most important step is to prepare an external drive. Not every memory card will work as an extension of internal memory. You will need a card with high speed write and read, preferably a class of UHS-I or UHS-II. Slow cards will cause strong lags in the applications that will be installed on them. It is recommended to use drives from 32 GB and above, since modern games and social networks take up a lot of space.
Before starting the procedure, be sure to back up all the important data on the memory card. The formatting process necessary to integrate the card into the system will completely destroy all information on the media. Copy photos, documents and videos to your computer or cloud storage to avoid permanent loss of files.
⚠️ Note: Once the card is formatted for internal memory, it will be encrypted and cannot be read on other devices without re-formatting.
Insert the card into the slot of your Xiaomi device. make sure the tray is closed tightly and before the click. If you are using a hybrid slot, make sure the card is installed correctly and does not overlap the SIM card contacts if you are using two SIM cards at the same time.
Basic settings through the smartphone menu
Once you install the map, Android usually detects the new drive itself. In the top notification curtain, you'll see a message about the new device. Click on it or go to Settings → Phone → Storage. The system will suggest using the card as a portable storage or as internal memory. For our purpose, we need the second option, but in the MIUI shell, this feature is often hidden or renamed.
In most cases, you need to select "Use as internal storage"; the system will warn you about formatting; confirm the action; the process can take from a few seconds to a couple of minutes depending on the size of the card; once completed, the system can suggest that you move the already installed applications and media files automatically.
☑️ Pre-formatting verification
If the standard menu does not offer to format the card for internal memory, this means that the manufacturer has blocked this function at the software level for this model, in which case, move to the next section, which describes the method of activation through the debugging engineering menu.
Activation through Developer Mode and ADB
To force the write function to the external drive, you need to activate the developer mode. → About the phone and quickly press 7 times on the item "Version" MIUI» or "Version" OS». You'll see a notification that says, "You've become a developer." Then, in the advanced settings, look for "Developers».
In the menu for developers, you need to find and enable the option “Do not turn off the screen when charging” (optional) and, more importantly, enable “Debugging by USB”. When you connect to your computer, a request for debugging permission will appear on the smartphone screen – be sure to check the “Always Allow” box and confirm.
What is ADB and why is it needed?
Next, you will need a computer with an ADB driver installed. Connect your smartphone with a cable to a PC. Open the command line on your computer in the folder with ADB and enter the command to check the connection: adb devices. If the device is determined, enter a command to force support for external drives: adb shell pm set-install-location 2. The number 2 indicates the priority of an external card, 0 is automatic selection, 1 is internal memory only.
Instructions for the portability of installed applications
Once the map is formatted and the permissions have been changed, you can start migrating. Go to Settings → Applications → All applications. Select the program you want to move. If the function is active, you will see the Move or Change button in the storage section.
However, even with the developer flags included, not all applications support portability: developers decide whether their product can be placed on an external medium. Xiaomi and Google system applications are often not portable, as they are critical to the stability of the OS.
- 📱 Open the settings of a particular application.
- 💾 Find the "Storage" or "Memory" section».
- 🔄 Press the "Move to the button" SD-map».
- ⏳ Wait for the process to end without turning off the screen.
If the movement button is grey or missing, it means that the application is rigidly tied to internal memory, in which case only cleaning the cache or deleting heavy data inside the program itself will help.
Working with multimedia and application files
Even if the app itself is left in internal memory, its “heavy” content (photos, videos, card cache, music) can often be redirected. Many programs, such as Telegram, WhatsApp, Spotify and navigators, have their own settings for the data retention path.
For example, on Telegram, you can go to Settings → Data and Memory → Path to files and select a memory card, which will free up gigabytes of internal space, and do the same with offline maps in navigators and downloaded music on streaming services.
| Type of data | Where to change the path | The effect |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Camera settings | New images are saved on SD |
| Music. | Settings of Player / Spotify | Cash and downloads on the map |
| Offline maps | Yandex settings/Google Map | The cards are stored externally. |
| Documents | Office Application Settings | Save files on SD |
Use a file manager, such as built-in Explorer or MI File Manager, to manually move photo and video folders from internal memory to the corresponding folders on the map. Be careful: don't move Android and obb system folders manually without understanding the structure, this can break the way games work.
Typical problems and ways to solve them
Users often experience applications that stop working or work slowly after transfer, which is due to the slower speed of reading a memory card compared to an embedded flash drive. If you notice severe delays, try transferring the most commonly used programs back to internal memory.
⚠️ Attention: If the memory card fails or is damaged, all applications transferred to it will stop running, and their data may be lost.
Another problem is that widgets or shortcuts disappear after a reboot, which is treated by restarting the launcher or re-creating shortcuts on the desktop, and it is also possible that after a MIUI update, the access rights settings will reset and the ADB procedure will have to be repeated.
💡
Use only trusted brands (SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston) and cheap marketplace cards often have a real capacity 10 times smaller than the declared capacity, resulting in data loss.
If the system constantly writes “App is not responding” after the transfer, then the specific program is incompatible with the external launch on your version of Android, in which case leave it in internal memory, and transfer the less demanding utilities to the map.
Alternative methods of memory optimization
If porting apps is impossible or causing problems, consider other ways to free up space. Cleaning the cache of the system and applications through the built-in Security utility allows you to return hundreds of megabytes. It is also worth checking the Download folder and the basket in the gallery - there is often a lot of excess accumulation there.
Using cloud services like Google Photos or Yandex Drive with autoload and delete from the device, allows you to store media files in the cloud, freeing up local space. This is often a more reliable way than storing on a memory card, which can physically fail.
💡
A memory card is a great solution for storing photos, videos and music, but for the performance of heavy games and instant messengers, it is better to leave them in the internal memory of the smartphone.
At the very least, you can consider resetting the device to factory settings, which is a radical method, but it allows you to completely clean the system of the garbage accumulated over the years of use, and remember to make a full backup of all the data before you do it.
