Transferring photos to a memory card in Xiaomi smartphones is a challenge that most users face after filling up internal memory. Despite the seeming simplicity, the process has nuances: from choosing the right format to choosing the right one. SD-maps to the features of working with the file system MIUI. In this article, we will analyze all the current ways to move photos, including manual transfer, automatic saving to the map and the use of third-party applications.
Itβs important to understand that not all memory cards are equally compatible with Xiaomi devices. For example, cheap microSDs without speed class A1/A2 can slow down the camera or gallery. Also, in the latest versions of MIUI 14, the algorithm for working with external drives has changed, so the system now more actively caches files in internal memory, even if you specified the card as the default storage location.
We have tested all methods on Redmi Note 12 Pro+, POCO X5 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Lite models with the latest firmware updates. The instructions are universal, but older devices (like Redmi 5 or Mi A2) may need additional steps due to stripped down MIUI features.
1. Preparation of a memory card: which format to choose
Before transferring the photo, make sure your SD-The map is properly formatted. Xiaomi supports two main formats:
- π Portable storage (FAT32/exFAT) β The card works like a flash drive, files are available on any device, suitable for temporary storage of photos.
- π Adoptable Storage: The card becomes part of the system, the files are encrypted, optimal for permanent use, but the card cannot be read on another device.
For most users, we recommend choosing the exFAT format with a 32KB cluster - it supports files larger than 4GB (unlike FAT32) and works faster than NTFS on mobile devices.
- Insert the card into the slot (some Xiaomi models require a reboot).
- Go to Settings β Memory β Memory Map.
- Click Format β as portable storage (or βinternal memoryβ if you want to expand the main storage).
- Select the exFAT file system (if available) and confirm.
β οΈ Warning: Formatting as internal memory irreversibly erases all data on the card and binds it to the current device. Once removed, the card cannot be used on another phone without completely erasing it.
Method 1: Manual transfer through the "Conductor"
The most reliable, but time-consuming method is to manually move files through a standard Files by Google (or Files by Google), which ensures that the photos remain in their original quality without compression.
Instructions:
- Open the Explorer application (the folder icon on the desktop).
- Go to Images or DCIM β Camera (there are photos taken on camera).
- Select the desired files with a long tap or click Select in the upper right corner.
- Click Move (not Copy!) and select the target folder on the memory card (e.g. SD Card β DCIM).
- Confirm the transfer. MIUI 14 may display a warning about a "slow card" - ignore it if the card is A2 class.
If you don't have a DCIM folder on the map, you can create it manually, which is important for the gallery to work properly, otherwise the photos may not appear on the Camera album.
Insert a memory card into the slot
Check the free space on the map (at least 10% of the photo volume)
Create a DCIM folder on the map (if it is not available)
Close all applications that work with photos (gallery, editor)
-->
β οΈ Note: Do not use Copy instead of Move if you want to free up internal memory.
Method 2: Automatically save new photos to the map
So that new photos are immediately saved to SD-map, change the camera settings:
- Open the Camera app.
- Put it on the gear (βοΈ) Or swipe from the right edge of the screen to open the settings.
- Find the Save Place (or Warehouse in older versions of MIUI).
- Select a Memory Card (if the option is inactive, the card is not formatted or used as internal memory).
After that, all new images will be automatically saved to the map, but this method has limitations:
- πΈ It doesnβt work for screenshots β theyβre always stored in your internal memory.
- π When connecting to a PC through MTP Photos from the card may not be displayed (you need to use a card reader).
- β‘ In some models (POCO F3, Redmi 10) for fast shooting, the camera temporarily stores the photos in internal memory, and then transfers them to the map.
(1) The card is formatted as a portable storage (not internal memory).
(2) There is sufficient space (minimum 500 MB) on the map.
3) The map supports the speed class A1/A2 (Otherwise, the camera may not see it as a valid storage device).-->
Method 3: Transfer over PC (for large volumes)
If you have to move thousands of photos (like after traveling), it's easier to use a computer, and it's also useful if the phone slows down when you're working with large files.
Step-by-step:
- Connect Xiaomi to your PC via USB-C cable (preferably original).
- On your phone, select File Transfer Mode (MTP) in the connection notification.
- On PC, open This computer - the phone will appear as a removable disk.
- Go to Internal Storage β DCIM β Camera (or Pictures for uploaded photos).
- Copy the files to your computer, then paste them into a folder on your memory card (SD Card β DCIM β Camera).
- After the transfer, remove the originals from the phone to make room.
Advantages of this method:
- π Faster than a mobile phone transfer (especially for 1000s)+ photo).
- π You can sort the photo by date/folder before transferring.
- π‘οΈ Below is the risk of data loss in a crash (there is an intermediate copy on the PC).
β οΈ Note: If the memory card is formatted as βinternal memoryβ, it will not be visible on the PC through the computer. MTP. In this case, remove the card and use the card reader.
5. Mistakes in the transfer of photos and their solutions
Even with the right actions, Xiaomi users face typical problems.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Photos are not displayed in the gallery after the transfer | Gallery cache not updated or incorrect folder | Reboot your phone or manually update the gallery (swipe down on Camera) and the photos should be in SD Card/DCIM/Camera. |
| "Not enough space" during transfer | The card is formatted in FAT32 and does not support >4GB files. | Reformat the card to exFAT (all data will be deleted!). |
| Transfer is interrupted at half | Slow card (C4 or no A1) | Use an A2 class card (such as SanDisk Extreme). |
| Photos are stored in internal memory despite settings | Mistakes in MIUI after update | Reset the camera settings: Settings β Apps β Camera β Storage β Clear the data. |
If the photos are displayed as "damaged" after transfer, check:
- π File format (should be.jpg or.png, not.heic).
- π The path to files (no Cyrillic characters in folder names).
- π οΈ Memory card integrity (scan for errors via PC: Properties) β Service β Check it out).
What to do if the memory card is not identified?
6. Third-party applications for photo transfer
If standard methods don't work, use specialized utilities. We tested 5 popular applications, and the best results were:
- π Files by Google β simple interface, the function βClean upβ automatically finds duplicate photos.
- π Send Anywhere β sends photos between devices over Wi-Fi without loss of quality.
- πΌοΈ Gallery Doctor - optimizes photo storage, offers transfer of old pictures to the map.
Example of transfer via Files by Google:
- Install the app from Google Play.
- Open the Cleanup section β Files.
- Select the images and select the desired photos.
- Press Move Move Move. β Memory map.
The advantage of third-party applications is additional functions:
- π Automatic sorting by date/size.
- ποΈ Removal of duplicates and blurred images.
- βοΈ Synchronization with the cloud (Google Photos, Mi Cloud).
β οΈ Note: Applications like Clean Master or CCleaner often offer compression to βoptimizeβ photos, which unknowingly reduces the quality of your images β only use the proven utilities listed above.
π‘
For maximum transfer speed, use A2-marked memory cards (such as Samsung EVO Plus or SanDisk Ultra) that are optimized for randomly recording small files (like photos), unlike C10-class cards that are designed for video recording.
7. Optimization of photo storage after transfer
Transferring a photo to a map is only half the battle, and to free up your internal memory and avoid refilling, follow these steps:
- Clear the cache of the gallery: Settings β Apps β Gallery β Storage β Clear the cache.
- Remove thumbnails: In MIUI, they take up to 1-2 GB. Use Files by Google ("Other files β.thumbnail").
- Set up automatic cleanup: In Settings β Memory β Cleanup, turn on the option βDelete unused filesβ.
- Turn off cloud duplication: If you use Google Photos or Mi Cloud, check if photos are saved to the map and cloud at the same time.
For models with a small internal memory (16-32 GB), we also recommend:
- πΈ Reduce photo resolution in camera settings (for example, from 48 MP to 12 MP).
- π₯ Disable saving RAW-Photos (unless you are a professional practitioner).
- π Regularly (once a month) transfer photos to your PC or external hard drive.
