Xiaomi Redmi 8 series smartphones have long been a popular budget choice, but over time, built-in storage of 32 or 64 GB begins to be catastrophically lacking. Android system grows, messenger cache takes up gigabytes, and installing new games becomes impossible without removing old ones. Users often look for ways to throw applications to the SD card to free up precious internal space for important data.
Unfortunately, modern versions of the MIUI shell and Android 9, on which Redmi 8 is based, have significantly limited the ability to directly migrate programs to an external drive. Standard methods that worked on older versions of the system are now often hidden or completely blocked by developers for the sake of stability, but there are proven workarounds that allow you to partially or completely solve the problem of overflow of memory.
In this guide, we will take a look at all the ways to expand the functionality of an external memory card, learn about native system settings, hidden features through the engineering menu and third-party utilities. It is important to understand that each method has its own risks and limitations that must be considered before you start manipulating the file system.
Features of the MIUI file system and the limitations of Android
Since Android 6.0, Google has introduced Adoptable Storage, which allows you to turn the device into a new version. SD-However, many manufacturers, including Xiaomi, have abandoned this feature in their shells. On Redmi 8, the memory card defaults to portable mode, which means that only media files and documents can be stored, but not the applications themselves.
The file system plays a key role in this process: the smartphone’s internal memory is formatted in ext4 format, which provides the high read and write speeds required for programs to run. Memory cards typically use FAT32 or exFAT formats, which are less efficient for constantly overwriting these applications, which can lead to interface brakes.
The system limitations of MIUI also prohibit the movement of heavy game cache and system components, and even if you can circumvent the standard restrictions, some of the data will still remain in internal storage, so that the user does not face a complete failure of the device when the card is removed or damaged.
⚠️ Attention: Forced movement of system applications can lead to unstable smartphone operation, cyclical reboots or complete interface failure.
Understanding these limitations will help you choose the right strategy. You don’t expect all 64GB of internal memory to be freed up completely, but moving some of the data will make life much easier for the device.
Preparation of SD-card and smartphone for work
Before attempting to port data, you need to make sure your drive meets the speed requirements. Applications, even in limited mode, require high write speeds. Cheap Class 4 or Class 6 cards won’t work, as they will become a performance bottleneck.
It is recommended to use UHS-I cards with a write speed of at least 20-30 MB / s. Before installing in Xiaomi Redmi 8, it is better to format the card on your computer to eliminate file system errors.
☑️ Preparation of the storage device
Once you physically put the card into the slot, the system will suggest you set it up, and at this point it's critical to choose the right type of use, so if you're going to store only photos and music, choose Portable Storage, and if you want to install apps, you'll need to set up the additional setup, which I'll talk about later.
Make sure that the battery is at least 50%, the process of formatting and transferring data is energy intensive, and a sudden power outage can damage the file table, which will lead to loss of information.
Native way to transfer through Android settings
The safest, though not always available, method is to use the system's built-in tools. Some firmware versions for Redmi 8 still allow individual applications to be moved unless the developer has banned it in the program manifesto.
To check for portability, go to the Settings menu → Annexes → All applications. Select the app you want from the list and find the item "Storage." If the button "Move to" SD-The card is active (not grey), you are lucky, and you can safely transfer the program with one click.
However, in most cases, on modern versions of MIUI, this button is missing or inactive, which means that the standard means to move the application, in which case users often resort to changing the developer's settings, which is a more advanced method.
⚠️ Note: Moving messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram) through standard settings can lead to loss of correspondence history.
If the standard method doesn't work, don't try to use questionable software from the Play Market that promises to "speed up" the process, most often they just duplicate system functions or contain advertising, and use proven methods of system configuration.
Activation of the Default function for external memory
There is a hidden setting in the developer menu that forces the system to count SD-This won't carry the programs that are already installed, but it will allow new games and utilities to be installed immediately on the map.
To activate this feature, first turn on the developer mode. Go to Settings → About phone and quickly click 7 times on the MIUI version. After you appear, "You became a developer", go back to the main settings menu.
In the section Additional → For developers, find the option “Remember the default path” or “Force allow apps to write on external storage.” Enabling this option may require rebooting the device, and then when installing new applications, the system will prompt you to select the installation location.
What if there is no item in the developer menu?
It's worth noting that this is no guarantee, and many modern applications ignore this flag and still install it in internal memory, but for older games and simple utilities, this method is often effective.
Use of the ADB-command-transfer
The most effective way to get around the limitations of MIUI is to use the Android debugging bridge (ADB), which requires connecting the smartphone to a computer and executing multiple commands, and allows you to force the attributes of applications to be changed, allowing them to move.
To start, you need to download the Platform-tools package from the official Google website and install drivers for Xiaomi. Connect your phone to your PC in USB debugging mode (the item is included in the developer menu). Then open the command line in the folder with ADB and enter the command to check the connection: adb devices.
Once you've successfully connected, you can use a command to change the settings of a particular application.
adb shell pm set-install-location 2Here, 2 represents an external drive. 0 returns the setting to internal memory, and 1 leaves the system to choose from. Once you have completed the command, restart your smartphone and try moving the apps through the standard settings menu.
It’s important to understand that even after these commands are executed, some applications may refuse to move, because app developers explicitly prohibit installation outside of internal memory in their product code.
Alternative methods and data management
If you can't move the app, you can move the data, and many programs, like navigation (Yandex Navigator, Google Maps) or instant messengers, allow you to specify the path to the memory card in your internal settings to store cache and downloaded cards.
For example, in the Telegram settings, you can specify the path to SD-This frees up a lot of storage space in the internal storage, although the application is technically still installed in the system.
For files that are not applications but take up a lot of space (documents, downloads), you can use the feature “Symbolic Links”. This is a more complex method that requires the presence of Root rights, which we do not recommend to ordinary users, as it violates the warranty and can lead to “bricking” of the device.
| Type of data | Can we move it? | Transfer method | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos and videos | Yes. | Camera settings/Gallery | Minimum |
| Cash card (Navigator) | Yes. | Internal settings of the application | Low. |
| Games (OBB files) | Partially. | Manual folder movement | Medium (startup errors) |
| System applications | No. | Not recommended | High (system failure) |
| Messengers (base) | No. | Media files only | Middle (loss of history) |
Use file managers like MI File Manager or Total Commander to clean up download folders regularly. Often users forget about downloaded APK installers and archives that take up space for years.

Use the Cleanup feature in Xiaomi’s Security app. It automatically finds large files and duplicates that can be safely deleted or moved.
