Moving from Samsung to Xiaomi Redmi 9 is not just about changing the brand, but also the need to transfer all the important data: contacts, photos, messages and even app settings. Many users face the challenge of how to do it quickly without losing a single file or spending hours on manual transfer. In this article, we will discuss 5 working ways to migrate data, including official tools from Xiaomi and universal solutions, and also explain how to avoid typical errors in transfer.
Redmi 9 features support for its Mi Mover app, which makes it easier to move data from Android devices. However, not everyone knows that it doesnโt work equally well with all Samsung models. We tested all of these methods in practice and found out which one is guaranteed to carry even a call history and notes from Samsung Notes without using a computer. If you need to save not only files, but also account settings or data from messengers, read on.
1.The official way: Mi Mover by Xiaomi
Mi Mover is an application built into Redmi 9 that is designed specifically for migrating data from other Android smartphones, and it supports transferring contacts, messages, photos, videos, audio, calendars, and even some settings for system applications, with the main advantage of not requiring a computer or cloud, but transferring directly over Wi-Fi.
To use Mi Mover, follow the following steps:
- ๐ฑ On Redmi 9, go to Settings โ The phone. โ Mi Mover (or find the app in the menu).
- ๐ Download Mi Mover from Google Play (if itโs not in your model).
- ๐ถ Run the app on both devices and select modes: Redmi 9 โ New Phone, Samsung โ Old Phone".
- ๐ Connect to a single Wi-Fi network or create an access point on Samsung.
- ๐ค On Samsung, select data to transfer and confirm the transfer.
It can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the amount of data. It's important that you don't interrupt the connection or lock the screen on both devices. If the transmission freezes during the connection phase, try restarting the application or changing the network type (from Wi-Fi to the access point).

โ ๏ธ Note: Mi Mover does not port data from some proprietary Samsung apps, such as Samsung Health or Samsung Pay.
2. Transfer through Google account (synchronization)
If you've used Google services on Samsung, most of the data is already synced to the cloud, a method that can transfer contacts, calendars, notes (from Google Keep), photos (from Google Photos), and even some app settings, and the main advantage is that you don't have to connect your phones to each other, just log in to Redmi 9.
Synchronization instructions:
- On Samsung, check that sync is enabled: Settings โ Accounts and Archiving โ Account Management โ Select Google โ Sync data Make sure Contacts, Calendar, Disk and Photos are included.
- On Redmi 9, when you first turn on, select โRestore from Backupโ and log in to the same Google account.
- If the phone is already set up, go to: Settings โ Accounts โ Google โ Sync and enable all the necessary options.
Photos and videos from Google Photos will appear on Redmi 9 automatically if you have the option "Backup and Sync" enabled. To save traffic, we recommend downloading media files only over Wi-Fi:
- ๐ธ Open Google Photos on Redmi 9.
- ๐ง Go to Settings. โ Backup and synchronization.
- ๐ถ Select "Only via Wi-Fi".
๐ก
If contacts are not automatically synced, check to see if they are duplicated in your Samsung account. To do this, export the contacts to a VCF file on Samsung, then import it manually to Redmi 9 via the Contacts app.
| Type of data | Synced through Google | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts | โ Yes. | Only if saved to a Google account, not a phone memory |
| Photos and videos | โ Yes (via Google Photos) | Original quality takes its place in the cloud |
| SMS messages | โ No. | Third-party application (e.g. SMS Backup & Restore) |
| Annexes | โ Partially. | Restore from Google Play, but no data inside |
| Notes (Samsung Notes) | โ No. | You need to export manually to PDF or text. |
3. OTG cable transmission (for large data volumes)
If you have a lot of heavy files (video) 4K, RAW-Photos or archives, the fastest way is to connect directly through the OTG-That's gonna take a cable. USB-C OTG-Adapter (if on Samsung microUSB connector or cable) USB-C to USB-C. The transmission speed in this case reaches 40-60 MB/s, that in 5-10 faster than Wi-Fi.
Step-by-step:
- Connect Samsung to Redmi 9 via OTG-The Redmi 9 screen will be notified "USB-plug-in".
- On Redmi 9, open Files and select the tab "USB-accumulator".
- Copy the required files (folders) DCIM, Downloads, Pictures, etc.) in internal memory or on SD-Redmi 9 map.
- Use the application to transfer applications APK Extractor on Samsung to save APK-Files and then install them on Redmi 9.
An important caveat: some of Samsung's system folders may be hidden, so in Explorer on Redmi 9, turn on the hidden file display:
Explorer โ โฎ (menu) โ Settings โ Show hidden filesโ ๏ธ Note: When copying photos and videos through OTG Date and geolocation tags can get lost if files were edited in the Samsung Gallery. To avoid this, use the original files from the folder DCIM/Camera.

4. Wireless transmission via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct
If you don't. OTG-cable, and the amount of data does not exceed 1-2 GB, you can use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct. These methods are slower, but do not require additional accessories. Bluetooth is suitable for transferring contacts, small photos or documents, and Wi-Fi Direct is for larger files (up to large ones). 10 GB, but at speed. ~5-10 MB/s).
How to transfer data via Bluetooth:
- ๐ต Turn on Bluetooth on both phones and pair them.
- ๐ On Samsung, select files (such as in Gallery or Explorer) and click "Send" โ "Bluetooth".
- ๐ฅ On Redmi 9, confirm your file acceptance.
How to transfer data via Wi-Fi Direct:
- ๐ถ On Samsung, activate Wi-Fi Direct in Settings โ Connections โ Wi-Fi โ Wi-Fi Direct.
- ๐ On Redmi 9, enable device search in Settings โ Wi-Fi โ Additionally. โ Wi-Fi Direct.
- ๐ค Connect to Samsung and use Explorer to transfer files.
To speed up the process, we recommend archiving files in ZIP before transferring. For example, all photos from the DCIM folder can be packaged into one archive using the RAR or ZArchiver application.
Why is Wi-Fi Direct faster than Bluetooth?
5. Computer transfer (for full control)
If you need to selectively transfer data or back up before a Samsung reset, the best way to do that is to use a computer, which ensures that all files are safe and sorted before transfer. USB-cable ~10-15 minute.
Instructions for Windows/macOS:
- Connect Samsung to your computer via USB and select File Transfer (MTP) mode.
- Copy the folders you need (DCIM, Pictures, Music, etc.) to your hard drive.
- Turn off Samsung and connect Redmi 9, also in MTP mode.
- Transfer the stored files to internal memory or SD-Redmi 9 map.
To transfer messages, call history and applications, use specialized programs:
- ๐ฌ SMS Backup & Restore โ Retains SMS and MMS into XML-The file is then restored to Redmi 9.
- ๐ Super Backup & Restore โ Exporting Call History and Contacts.
- ๐ฆ Titanium Backup (requires root) โ transfers applications along with their data.
โ ๏ธ Note: When connecting Redmi 9 to your computer for the first time, you may need to install Mi drivers PC Download them from Xiaomiโs official website to avoid device recognition issues.
๐ก
Use a computer if you need to transfer more than 20GB of data or back up before selling Samsung, the only method that gives you 100% control over the process and allows you to verify the integrity of files.
6.Transfer data from Samsung proprietary applications
Some Samsung apps (e.g. Samsung Health, Samsung Notes, Samsung Pay) are not directly comparable to Xiaomi and are not portable via Mi Mover or Google.
Samsung Health:
- ๐ Open the app on Samsung and go to Settings โ Export of data.
- ๐ Select the format (usually.csv or.tcx) and save the file.
- ๐ฒ Transfer the file to Redmi 9 and import it to Mi Fitness or Google Fit.
Samsung Notes:
- ๐ In the Samsung Notes app, select a note โ Exports โ PDF or a text file.
- ๐ Send the file to yourself by mail or via messenger.
- ๐ฑ On Redmi 9, open the file in Mi Notes or Google Keep.
Samsung Pay: Unfortunately, card data and transaction history cannot be exported, so you will have to re-add the cards to Mi Pay or Google Pay on Redmi 9.
๐ก
To transfer data from the Samsung Internet (bookmarks, history), use sync with your Samsung account, and then export the book icons to the Samsung account. HTML-This file can be imported into Mi Browser or Google Chrome on Redmi 9.
Solving Typical Problems in Data Transfer
Even with official methods, users often encounter errors, and here are the most common problems and solutions.
