Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphone owners often face the need to expand their internal storage, so when internal memory becomes insufficient for photos, videos or applications, an external drive comes to the rescue. SD-Not all users understand where to look for files and how to make the system correctly display content.
In Android, especially in the MIUI or HyperOS shell, the process of opening a memory card can involve several actions: it can be a primary configuration (formatting), searching for files through a conductor or solving problems with the invisibility of the drive. Modern versions of Android require the mandatory formatting of the card in the exFAT or NTFS file system to work correctly with large amounts of data.
In this article, we will look at all the steps of external storage, how to properly prepare a map, where to look for hidden system folders, and what to do if the device is silent after installing the memory module, and the instructions cover both software settings and physical aspects of the connection.
Physical installation and primary system response
The first step is always to physically connect the drive correctly. In most Xiaomi models, the slot is for the device. SIM-It's a microSD slot, and it's important not to confuse orientations and not to damage the contacts. The tray is usually extracted with a special clip that comes with a bundle, or a thin needle.
After removing the tray, carefully inspect it. One side has a SIM card space and the other has a memory card recess. When installing a microSD, it is important that the contacts look down (or up, depending on the particular model, usually indicated on the diagram on the tray itself). The card should be snapped with a light click if an adapter is used, or fit tightly if inserted directly.
β οΈ Warning: Never try to remove or insert a memory card while your smartphone is on unless the Hot Replace feature is enabled in the settings. In most cases, Xiaomi requires you to turn off the device or pre-unmount the drive to avoid data loss.
After installing the tray back and turning on the smartphone, the system should emit a characteristic connection sound. USB-You may notice a new drive on the screen, and if you don't, check the density of the contacts, and sometimes it helps to clean the gold contacts of the memory card with a soft wipe or an alcohol napkin.

Configuring and formatting the drive
If you insert a new card or a card you've previously used on another device, Android will likely ask you to configure it.The system will offer two uses: as a portable storage device or as part of internal memory.
To get started, you need to format the drive. This process will completely clear all the data, so make sure that there is no important information on the map. Formatting creates a new file structure that is understandable to your Xiaomi smartphone. Without this procedure, files can not be read or written with errors.
The formatting process takes anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on the size of the card. During this operation, do not turn off the screen or run heavy applications. Interrupting the process can damage the file table, after which the card becomes unreadable.

Use UHS-I or higher (U1, U3) memory cards to record 4K video. Slow cards will cause delays when shooting and opening heavy files.
Where to find files: work with the conductor
Once you've set up a file, the question is, how do you open a memory card to Xiaomi's Android to view files? The MIUI shell is the default File Manager app, which has a yellow folder icon and is usually located in the Tools folder on your desktop.
When you run the app, you'll see the top bar with tabs, and we're interested in a tab that might be called Files, Review, or have a signature folder icon. In addition to Internal Shared Storage, the list of available storages should show a paragraph "SD-card" or the brand name of your card (e.g. Samsung, SanDisk).
Clicking on this, you'll be taken to the root directory of the external drive, where you store folders from applications (e.g. DCIM for photos, Music for tracks, Download for downloads). If you don't see the files you want, check if they're hidden. In the conductor settings (three dots or stripes in the corner), there's an option to "Show hidden files."
| folder | Description of the contents | Systemic? |
|---|---|---|
| DCIM | Camera photos and videos | No. |
| Android | Application data and cache | Yes. |
| MIUI | Screenshots and screen recordings (on older versions) | Yes. |
| Bluetooth | Files obtained via Bluetooth | No. |
| LOST.DIR | Recovered files after failure | Yes. |
Display problems: why the map is not visible
It is not uncommon for Xiaomi phones to not see the memory card, it may be software or hardware reasons, and often the problem is file system incompatibility, and if the card was formatted on a computer in NTFS format without the appropriate drivers on the phone, or in ext4 (Linux) format, the smartphone may not recognize it.
Another common case is the oxidation of contacts in the smartphone slot itself, which can eventually get dust or moisture, which disrupts contact, and itβs also worth checking if your model supports the declared card size. Older devices may not βseeβ cards larger than 128 GB or 256 GB.
If the card is detected but the files are not opened or errors are written, the drive may be corrupted logically. In this case, error checking through the computer will help. Connect the card through the card reader to the PC, right-click on the disk, select Properties β Service β Verification.
β οΈ Note: If the system says that the card is corrupt and requires formatting, and it has important data, do not agree to formatting immediately.First try to read the data through the computer using recovery programs such as Recuva or DiskDigger.
Using the card as internal memory
In some versions of Android, Xiaomi has the Adoptable Storage feature, which allows you to combine internal memory and memory. SD-This is convenient if the built-in storage is critically small, but has its drawbacks.
When this mode is activated, the card is encrypted and linked to a particular device, and you can't open that card on another phone or computer without losing data, and all the applications and their data will be transferred to an external drive.
To activate this function, go to Settings β Memory, choose yours. SD-You can click on "Use as internal storage" and the system will warn you of the risks and the need for high speed card. V30 or higher so that the phone interface does not start to slow down.
Risks of using the card as internal memory
Safe extraction and maintenance
Finishing the drive correctly is a guarantee of the integrity of your data, and software unmounting is required before you physically extract the card, ensuring that all background recording processes are completed.
To do this, go to Settings β Memory. Find your card in the list and click "Extract" or "Disable." Only after you have a message that the card can be retrieved, turn off the phone or remove the tray, ignoring this step can lead to broken files.
Check the card regularly, connect it to your computer every few months and back up important files, and external drives are less reliable than the internal memory of your smartphone, and have limited overwrite cycles.

Always use the Safe Retrieval feature in the settings before physically extracting the card to prevent file system corruption and data loss.
