Have you inserted a microSD into the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro, but the phone can't see it? Or is the card detected but files are not available to write? The problem with accessing an external drive is one of the most common among MIUI users. The reasons may lie in system settings, file system incompatibility or hardware limitations of a particular model.
In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to unlock. SD-cards on smartphones Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO — From basic actions in the settings menu to advanced methods using ADB. You will learn how to properly format the map under MIUI, Why does the system ask for permission to access, and what to do if the card is identified as corrupt, and at the end, answers to frequent questions and a filesystem compatibility table.
Why Xiaomi doesn’t see why SD-card or block access to files
Before you try to hack access, it's important to understand the root of the problem, because 80 percent of the time, it's not hardware faults that are to blame, but MIUI software limitations or user settings that are incorrect.
- 🔹 The map is formatted in NTFS/exFAT — MIUI It only works with default FAT32 (before 32 GB ext4 (storage).
- 🔹 No access rights – with Android 11+ Applications need explicit permission to work with external drives.
- 🔹 The card is connected as internal memory – in this mode it is encrypted and not read on other devices.
- 🔹 Hardware incompatibility – some Xiaomi models (e.g. Mi 11 Ultra) do not support cards larger than 512 GB.
- 🔹 Faulty file system – if the card is retrieved during the recording, it can be defined as “empty».
Also, the problem may be updating MIUI: after you upgrade to a new version (for example, from MIUI 13 to MIUI 14), sometimes application permissions are reset. If you recently updated your firmware, first check the access settings in Settings → Applications → Permissions → Storage.
Method 1: Permit access to the SD-hand-card
Starting with Android 11, applications require separate permission to work with external drives. Even if the card is installed on the system, programs (such as a gallery or file manager) may not see the files.
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Select the application that you want to access (such as Gallery or Files).
- Go to Permits. → Warehouse.
- Activate the “Access to all files” switch (on some firmwares – “Manage all files”).
If the option is not available:
- 📌 Try to update the app through Google Play.
- 📌 Install an alternative file manager (e.g. Solid Explorer or Solid Explorer) FX File Explorer, which supports the work with MIUI.
💡
On some models (such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro) you need to restart your phone after giving permissions to make the changes take effect.
Method 2: Formatting SD-Maps to the correct file system
MIUI does not support NTFS or exFAT for external memory cards, only FAT32 (up to 32 GB) or ext4 (for internal storage). If your card is formatted in NTFS (for example, for use in a camera or on a PC), the phone will not see it, the solution is to reformat the card to FAT32.
Important: formatting will remove all the data from the card! First, copy the files to the computer.
Instructions for Windows:
- Connect the card to the PC through the card reader.
- Open this computer, right-click on SD-map → Format.
- Select the FAT32 file system (if the card size is up to 32 GB) or exFAT (if larger, but then there may be problems with MIUI).
- Click Start and wait until it is completed.
Instructions for MIUI:
If the card is determined by the phone but does not work correctly:
- Go to Settings. → Warehouse.
- Tap it on. SD-map → Format → External vault.
- Confirm the action (the process will take 1-2 minutes).
What if MIUI doesn’t allow you to format the card?
| File system | Max. Map size. | Support for MIUI | PC-compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | 32GB | ✅ Complete. | ✅ Yes. |
| exFAT | up to 128 PB | ❌ No (only on some models) | ✅ Yes. |
| NTFS | limitlessly | ❌ No. | ✅ Yes. |
| ext4 | limitlessly | ✅ Internal storage only | ❌ No (Linux needed) |
Method 3: Setup SD-maps as internal memory
If you want to use a memory card as an extension of internal storage (for example, to install applications), you need to mount it as an internal one.
- 🔴 The card will be encrypted and will not be read on other devices.
- 🔴 After extraction, all data on it will be deleted.
- 🔴 Not all applications can be transferred to SD (depends on the developer).
Instructions:
- Put the card in the phone.
- Go to Settings. → Warehouse → SD-map.
- Tap: Set up» → «Internal memory».
- Follow the instructions on the screen (the phone will prompt you to format the card).
Backup card data | Charge phone at least 50% |Use Class 10 (UHS-I) |Do not retrieve card during process-->
⚠️ Note: On some models (POCO F3, Redmi K40) After mounting the card as internal memory, you can not roll back changes - it will have to be formatted again via PC.
Method 4: Using ADB for forced mounting
If the card is identified in the system, but is not mounted automatically, you can try mounting it manually through ADB.
Preconditions:
- 🔧 Included debugging by USB (Settings → The phone. → Version. MIUI → 7 times to tap according to the version → return to → For developers → Debugging by USB).
- 🔧 Installed drivers ADB on a PC and connected phone.
Instructions:
adb shell
sm list-disks
sm partition disk:XX,XX privateWhere XX,XX — identifier SD-maps (recognize it by command sm list-disks).
If the command is successful, restart the phone. The map should appear in Settings → Warehouse.
💡
The ADB method only works on unencrypted cards, and if you've previously mounted it as internal memory, it doesn't work, you need to flash it or reset it.
Method 5: Checking the card for errors and hardware problems
If neither method worked, it could be a physical damage to the card or the phone slot.
- 🔍 Test on another device: Insert the card into another phone, tablet or PC, if it is not detected, the card is defective.
- 🔍 Slot check: Try inserting another work card into your phone, and if it doesn't read, there's a problem with the slot (possibly contaminated or damaged).
- 🔍 Diagnostics via PC: Connect the card to your computer and run error check: chkdsk E: /f (Replace E: with the letter of your disk).
If the card is damaged, try to recover data with programs like Recuva or PhotoRec, and then replace it with a new one. For Xiaomi smartphones, we recommend A2 or UHS-I cards (for example, SanDisk Ultra or Samsung EVO Plus).
⚠️ Warning: Don’t buy no-name memory cards from brands (e.g. Transcend without class labeling) cheap drives often have low write speeds, which is why they are so fast. MIUI They can be blocked from accessing them as “damaged».
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
Here is a table of typical error messages and how to fix them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| «SD-The card is damaged» | Improper extraction or failure of the file system | Formatting via PC in FAT32 or checking for errors (chkdsk) |
| "A reading-only map" | Physical switch on the map or mounting error | Check the Lock switch on the adapter, remount the card |
| “Not enough space” when moving apps | The map is formatted as portable, not internal. | Reconfigure the card as internal memory (see Method 3) |
| «SD-card not supported» | The card size exceeds the model limit (for example, 1 TB in the Redmi 9A) | Use a card up to 512 GB |
