MicroSD cards are an indispensable accessory for Xiaomi Redmi owners, especially if the internal memory is sorely lacking for photos, videos or applications. However, over time, the drive begins to βbrakeβ, give out read errors or completely cease to be recognized by the system. In 90% of cases, the problem is solved by banal formatting - but how to do it correctly so as not to lose data and not spoil the card?
In this article, we will analyze all formatting methods on Redmi smartphones (including Note 12 Pro models).+, Redmi 10C, Redmi A2 And others, we will find out which file system to choose (FAT32, exFAT or NTFS), And we can learn to recover the map if the phone doesn't see it, and we can also unlock the hidden formatting mode through the engineering menu. MIUI, which is not even written in official documents.
When should I format a memory card?
Formatting is not just a file cleaner, but a complete rewriting of the drive's file system.
- π± The card is detected but not opened (the error is "damaged drive" or "Put the disk inΒ»)
- π’ The speed of writing / reading fell by 2-3 times (files are copied βforeverβ, the video lays down)
- π« Phone asks to format the card with each connection
- π You want to use the card as an internal memory (Adoptable Storage function in the computer). MIUI)
- π The card is new, but the phone does not see it (initialization is required)
Important: if the card is physically damaged (for example, a broken contact or scratches), formatting will not help - it will have to be replaced. How to distinguish a software error from a hardware one? Try inserting the card into another phone or computer. If it is not detected anywhere, it is a hardware failure.
β οΈ Note: Format permanently deletes all data from the card. If it has important files, try to restore them first with programs like Recuva or DiskDigger (more in the backup section).
Preparation for formatting: 5 mandatory steps
Before you click Format, do these steps β they will save you nerves and data:
Backup data | Check the card for errors via PC | Make sure the card is not used as internal memory | Charge the phone at least 50% | Take the card out of the slot and wipe the contacts with a dry wipe-->
If you have previously configured the card as an extension of the main storage (the Adoptable Storage function in MIUI), it cannot be formatted in the standard way.
- Go to Settings β Memory β Memory Map.
- Slip on the three dots in the top right corner and select Storage Settings.
- Click Format as a portable drive (this will return the card to the status of a removable disk).
If the card is used as internal memory, and you format it through the computer, the phone will not see it at all β you will have to reset MIUI settings to factory.
Method 1: Formatting through phone settings (most secure)
This method is suitable for most Xiaomi Redmi models (including Redmi Note 11, Redmi 9A, Redmi K50 and others) and guarantees compatibility with the MIUI file system.
- Put the card in the slot (if it is not already inserted).
- Open the Settings β Memory.
- Tap on the name of your card (for example, SD-128GB card).
- In the upper right corner, click on three dots and select Storage Settings.
- Select Format β Clean and format.
- Confirm the action (a password or pattern lock may be required).
By default, MIUI will offer an exFAT file system, which is the best choice for cards with a capacity of 64 GB. If you have a card of 32 GB or less, the system will automatically select FAT32.
| File system | Max. File size. | Max. Map size. | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAT32 | 4GB | 32GB | All devices, but file size limit |
| exFAT | 16 EB (virtually unlimited) | Up to 128 PBB | Modern smartphones, cameras, PCs |
| NTFS | 16 EB | Up to 16 EB | Not supported by most smartphones |
β οΈ Warning: If the card fails again after formatting, check for counterfeit. Fake microSDs often have an understated real capacity (for example, instead of 128 GB, only 16 GB). H2testw PC-only.
π‘
If the phone doesn't see the card after formatting, try restarting the device or pasting the card into another slot (if any). SIM-cards and microSD in places (if the slot is hybrid).
Method 2: Formatting via computer (for power users)
If the phone refuses to format the card (e.g., it gives a Team Not Filed error), you can do it via Windows or MacOS. This method is also useful if you want to choose a file system that MIUI does not offer (e.g., NTFS for working with >4 GB files on a PC).
Instructions for Windows:
- Connect the card to your computer via card reader (not your phone!).
- Open this computer (My computer), find your card and remember its letter (e.g., D:).
- Press Win + R, enter diskpart and press Enter.
- Enter the commands in order: list disk select disk X (where X is your card number) clean create partition primary format fs=exFAT quick (or fs=FAT32) assign letter=D (the letter must match the original) exit
For macOS:
- Connect the card through the adapter.
- Open the Disk Utility (Applications β Utilities)
- Select the card in the left menu, click Erase.
- Enter the exFAT or MS-DOS (FAT) format and press Erase.
If Windows says βWindows fails to complete formatting,β try:
- π§ Use the utility SD Formatter (official instrument of the SD Association)
- π₯οΈ Formatting through Disk Management (Win) + X β Disk management)
- π Restart your computer and try again
What to do if the computer does not see the card?
Method 3: Hidden Formatting through MIUI Engineering Menu
Few people know, but Xiaomi Redmi has a hidden engineering menu through which you can format your memory card bypassing standard settings.
- π΅ The phone doesnβt see the card, but it works on other devices.
- π Standard formatting ends in error
- π οΈ You need a βdeepβ formatting (not fast)
Instructions:
- Open the Phone app and enter the combination: ##4636##.
- In the menu that opens, select Testing.
- Go to the Storage section.
- Slip on the SD card and select Format.
- Confirm the action (reboot may be required).
This method works even on persistent cards that refuse to be formatted in other ways, but beware: the engineering menu allows you to change system settings, and sloppy actions can cause MIUI to fail.
π‘
The engineering menu is a powerful tool, but you should only use it if the standard methods don't work. Don't change the other options on this menu without understanding their purpose!
What to do if the card is not formatted?
If all the methods have been tried and the map stubbornly does not want to be formatted, the reasons may be as follows:
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Phone/PC doesn't see the card | Controller or contacts damaged | Try another card reader or take it to the service |
| Error "Disk is protected from recording" | Lock switch activated on adapter | Switch the lever on the adapter to the Unlock position |
| Formatting "hangs" by 0% | Damaged sectors or a fake map | Check H2testw or replace the card |
| After formatting, the map broke again. | Wear of memory cells (many write cycles) | Replace the card - its resource is exhausted |
If the map is defined but not formatted, try low-level formatting through utilities:
- π» HDD Low Level Format Tool (for Windows)
- π₯οΈ Disk Utility in Full Erase (for MacOS)
- π± SD Maid (Android app with root rights)
If nothing works, the card is likely to be physically defective, in which case it can be disposed of, and further attempts at recovery will only make the situation worse.
How to recover data after formatting?
If you formatted the card by mistake and it had important files on it, do not despair - the chances of recovery are there, but they depend on two factors:
- Formatting type: With a βquick formatβ, data recovery is easier than after full format.
- Post-formatting actions: If you wrote new files to a map, they could overwrite old data.
The best recovery programs:
- π Recuva (free, easy management)
- πΎ DiskDigger (there is a version for Android)
- π₯οΈ R-Studio (paid, but most powerful)
- π± Undeleter (works directly on the phone)
Instructions for recovery through Recuva:
- Install the program on your PC and connect the card through the card reader.
- Select the file type (e.g., βImagesβ or βAll Filesβ).
- Specify the path to the memory card and start the scan.
- After completion, mark the desired files and click Restore.
- Save the data to the hard drive (not to the card!).
β οΈ Note: Do not save recovered files back to the memory card, this may result in their re-loss. Use another drive (for example, a PC hard drive).
