Why does Redmi 6A run out of memory so fast?
Xiaomi Redmi 6A, with its modest 16 or 32 GB of internal memory, is a true champion in storage filling speed. Even with a minimal set of applications, users are faced with a notification โNot enough memoryโ after a couple of months of active use. What is it?
The reason lies in the architecture of MIUI and hardware limitations of the budget device. the system by default reserves up to 3-4 GB for your needs (including updates), and the remaining space is quickly eaten:
- ๐ธ App cache (especially YouTube, Facebook, instant messengers)
- ๐ Hidden files from MIUI (Logs, dumps, time data)
- ๐ต Media files in messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram automatically download photos / videos)
- ๐ Duplicates and debris after system updates
For example, after updating MIUI 12 โ MIUI 13 on Redmi 6A, up to 1-1.5 GB of unnecessary files can appear in memory - the system does not always clean old data correctly. And if you are actively using Google Photos or Xiaomi Gallery, then thumbnails and previews take up hundreds of megabytes imperceptibly.
Method 1: Cleaning the application cache manually
The fastest way to free up 500MB to 2GB of storage is to remove the app cache. On Redmi 6A, this is especially true for social networks and instant messengers that actively cache media.
How to do this:
- Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Slip on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Sort by size.
- Open the app (like Facebook or Chrome) and click Clear Cache.
- To clean up completely, click Clear Data, but note: this will reset the application settings (you will log out of accounts).
| Annex | Average cache size | Can it be cleaned without loss? |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 300-800 MB | Yeah (cash video) |
| 500 MB - 1.5 GB | Yeah (miniatures, stories) | |
| Telegram | 200 MB - 1 GB | Partially (media chat) |
| Google Play Services | 100-500 MB | No (risk of failure) |
โ ๏ธ Note: Do not clear the cache of Google Play Services, MIUI System and Android System โ this can lead to errors in the smartphone. Also avoid cleaning data in Settings and Phone.
โ๏ธ Safe cleaning of the cache
Method 2: Transfer of data to SD-map
The Redmi 6A supports microSD cards up to 256GB, but not all files can be transferred automatically.
What can be transferred:
- ๐ท Photos and videos (via Gallery or Google Photos)
- ๐ต Music and podcasts (by hand or through) MIUI Music)
- ๐ Documents (PDF, Word, Excel)
- ๐ฎ Some games (only if the developer has provided support) SD)
What I CAN'T move:
- โ Appendices (on Redmi) 6A No Adoptable Storage function)
- โ System updates and cache MIUI
- โ Data messengers (WhatsApp, Viber)
Instructions for transfer:
- Put it in. SD-Format as a portable storage, not internal memory!).
- Open Files (app) MIUI File Manager).
- Select the files โ More. โ Move it โ SD-map.
- To automatically save new photos to the map: Camera settings โ Preservation site โ SD-map.
โ ๏ธ Attention: If you pull out SD-card without safe extraction (Settings) โ Warehouse โ Extract SD-Also, don't use cards below Class 10, they slow down your phone.
๐ก
Before transferring important files to SD-You can copy it to your computer. Cheap memory cards often fail without warning.
Method 3: Delete unnecessary system files
MIUI creates a lot of hidden files that are not visible in standard Explorer, and can be found and deleted using third-party tools.
Steps for cleaning:
- Install Files by Google or SD Maid from the Play Market.
- Start the storage analysis (in Files by Google: Cleanup โ Analysis).
- Delete: ๐๏ธ Temporary files (.tmp,.temp) ๐ฆ Empty folders (remain after deleting applications) ๐.log and.dump files (error logs) MIUI) ๐ผ๏ธ Miniatures (.thumbnail) from a folder DCIM
Pay special attention to the folders:
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/ โ cache of games and applications
/storage/emulated/0/MIUI/ - Temporary system files
/storage/emulated/0/DCIM/.thumbnails - miniaturesHow to find hidden files without root rights?
Method 4: Optimize MIUI and disable unnecessary functions
The MIUI on Redmi 6A, by default, includes many background processes that eat up memory.
What can be safely disabled:
- ๐ก Auto-update MIUI: Settings โ The phone. โ Updating the system โ Three points. โ Settings โ Downloading (turn off).
- ๐ Background synchronization: Settings โ Accounts. โ Google โ Account sync (disable unnecessary items).
- ๐ Statistics MIUI: Settings โ Additionally. โ Confidentiality โ Send usage data (turn off).
- ๐จ Topics and Wallpaper: Remove Unused Themes in Settings โ Topics.
What can I not turn off:
- โ Google Play Services (will lead to the collapse of applications)
- โ MIUI Daemon (system process)
- โ Android System WebView (required for browsers)
It is also useful to limit the background activity of applications:
- Go to Settings โ Battery and Performance โ Battery Management.
- Select Background Limitation for unnecessary applications (such as games or rarely used programs).
๐ก
Disabling MIUI auto updates and background synchronization can save up to 1 GB of storage per month by reducing temporary files.
Method 5: Reset to factory settings (last resort)
If you have less than 1 GB of free space, and the previous methods didn't work, you have a hard reset, which will completely clean up your phone, but delete all the data. Make sure you back up!
How to reset Redmi 6A:
- Copy important files to your computer or SD-map.
- Go to Settings โ Additional โ Recovery and Reset โ Resetting.
- Choose Delete all data and confirm.
- After the reboot, the phone will look like new.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On Redmi 6A Reset via Recovery Mode (Power buttons) + Volume Up) can cause a "No command" error. Use only a reset from the settings menu!
After discharge:
- ๐ง Do not restore backup copy through MI Cloud โ It will return the garbage files.
- ๐ฅ Install applications selectively, not all at once.
- ๐ Clean the cache regularly (once a week).
Method 6: Using Cloud Storage
If you're running out of physical memory, you can move some of that data to the cloud. Redmi 6A works best.
| Service | Free seat | What to store | Autoboot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Photo | 15GB (common with Gmail) | Photos, video | Yes. |
| MI Cloud | 5GB | Contacts, notes, SMS | Yes. |
| Yandex Disc. | 10GB | Documents, music | No. |
| Telegram | Unlimited* | Files up to 2 GB | Yes (in "Saved Messages") |
* When using Telegram Premium or bot @SaveToCloudBot.
How to set up autoload in Google Photos:
- Install an app from the Play Market.
- Open Settings โ Backup and Synchronization.
- Enable Backup and select High Quality (unoriginal size saves space).
- In Settings โ Free up space, delete the already uploaded photos from your phone.
Important: After uploading files to the cloud, do not manually delete them from your phone โ use the Free up space feature in the app itself to avoid duplicates.
Method 7: Alternative firmware (for advanced)
If you are willing to take drastic measures, installing custom firmware (such as LineageOS or Pixel Experience) can free up to 3-4 GB due to:
- ๐๏ธ Removing embedded applications MIUI (music, video, themes).
- ๐ง Optimization of system processes.
- ๐ฆ No duplicate services Xiaomi.
Risks:
- โ ๏ธ Loss of guarantee.
- โ ๏ธ Possible bugs (camera, sensors).
- โ ๏ธ Difficulty returning to standard firmware.
If you decide, follow the instructions:
- Unlock Bootloader through the official Xiaomi website.
- Install TWRP Recovery for Redmi 6A (the version should match the model!).
- Download the firmware (for example, with XDA Developers) and install it via TWRP.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On Redmi 6A with a MediaTek Helio processor A22 Some custom firmware may not support VoLTE (calls on the Internet) 4G). Before installing, check user reviews with your model (cactus for the 16 GB cactus_global for 32 GB).
