7 Proven Cleaning Methods
Viber

MIUI
Not everyone knows that Viber stores three types of data: app cache (temporary files), media files (photos, videos, stickers) and a messaging database (chats and correspondence). Cleaning each type requires different actions, from simply pressing a button to manually deleting folders through the file manager. We will show you how to do this as safely as possible so you do not lose access to your account or important messages.
If your Xiaomi Redmi is slower and you see Viber taking several gigabytes in your memory settings, donβt rush to buy a new phone. 90% of the time, the problem is solved with 10-15 minutes of cleaning using built-in Android and MIUI tools. The main thing is to follow the instructions in order and not miss important steps, such as creating a backup before mass deletion of files.
1. Clear Viber cache through Android settings
Viber cache is a temporary file that speeds up the messenger, but over time accumulates and takes up extra space. On Xiaomi Redmi, you can clear the cache directly from the app menu without going to Viber itself. This method is the fastest and most secure, since it does not affect your correspondence or media files.
Open Settings β Applications β Application Management and find Viber in the list. Tap it, then select Storage. Here you will see two options:
- π Cache β temporary files (can be deleted without risk)
- ποΈ Data β correspondence, settings, media (not recommended to be deleted!)
Click Clear cache, which will free up 100MB to 1GB of storage depending on usage activity, and if the button is inactive, the cache is already empty.
β οΈ
Warning: Do not click Clear Data β this will result in a complete reset of Viber to a state of βas after installationβ, and you will have to re-enter the phone number and restore chats from the backup (if any).
2. Delete media files directly in Viber chats
The main memory eater in Viber is photos, videos, voice messages and stickers that are saved automatically, and even if you haven't downloaded them manually, the messenger can store them in hidden folders. You can clean media in two ways: via the Viber interface or manually through the file manager.
Open any chat in Viber, tap the name of the person (or group) and select Chat Information. Scroll down to Media, Files and Links, which displays all files sent and received. Click Show All, then:
- πΌοΈ For photos and videos: highlight unnecessary files with a long tap, then click Delete (basket in the upper right corner).
- π€ For voice messages: swipe left on message and select Delete.
- π For documents: Click on the file, then Delete for everyone (if you need to delete and from the interlocutor).
Note that deleting files from the chat does not free up space on the phone if they are already saved in the gallery. To completely clean, you also need to delete them from the Viber folder in the file manager (more about this in the next section).
π‘
To prevent Viber from saving media files automatically, go to Settings Viber β Media β Autoboot and turn off options for mobile data and Wi-Fi. This will save up to 50% of memory!
3. Manual deletion of Viber folders through file manager
If previous methods didnβt work, then Viberβs media and other data are stored in hidden folders on the internal drive. On Xiaomi Redmi, they can be found through the standard File Manager (or Mi File Manager).
/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.viber.voip/Here you'll see the folders:
- πΈ Viber Images - all photos from chat rooms
- π₯ Viber Videos - Videos and GIFs
- π΅ Viber Audio β Voice Messages and Audio
- π Viber Documents - Files PDF, Word, Excel
You can delete the contents of these folders completely, which won't hurt Viber's work, but it will free up a significant amount of space, for example, in the Viber Videos folder, there are often duplicate videos sent in different chat rooms.
β οΈ
Note: Do not delete the entire com.viber.voip folder, this will cause a malfunction of the messenger. Only delete the contents of the attached folders (Images, Videos, etc.).
| Type of file | Size (example) | Can I remove it? | How to repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat photos | 500MB - 2GB | Yes. | Resend or restore from backup |
| Videos and GIFs | 1 GB - 5 GB | Yes. | Download again (if saved in the cloud) |
| Voice communications | 100MB - 1GB | Yes. | Not restored (unless saved in chat) |
| Documents (PDF, DOC) | 200 MB - 2 GB | Yes. | Re-send or download from the cloud |
| Cash and temporary files | 50 MB - 500 MB | Yes. | Automatically recovers when used |
4. Clearing the history of messages (chats) without deleting the account
If you need to make room, but you don't have to save the correspondence, you can delete old chats or completely clear the message history. This will not delete your Viber account, but you can not return messages (if there is no backup copy).
- Open the chat room you want to clean.
- Tapping by the name of the interlocutor (or group) β Information about the chat.
- Choose Clear History (for groups, Delete and Leave).
- Confirm the action.
For mass removal of chats:
- π± Go to Viber Settings β Account. β Confidentiality β Clear history.
- ποΈ Choose Clear Everything β this will delete all messages in all chats, but save contacts and settings.
β οΈ
Warning: After clearing the history, Viber can temporarily run slower, which is normal, as the app will re-index the remaining data, and the speed will return to normal in 5-10 minutes.
Create a backup copy of important correspondence|Check if there are any important files in the chats|Make sure you have access to cloud storage (if you use it)|Tell your interlocutors about the planned cleaning (if necessary)-->
5. Reset Viber to factory settings (full cleaning)
If Viber is slow enough to interfere with your phone, or you want to completely delete all of your messaging data (including your account), reset your Android settings, which is a good option if you no longer plan to use Viber or want to start with a clean slate.
Instructions for Xiaomi Redmi:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management β Viber.
- Press Warehouse. β Clear the data.
- Confirm the action (this will delete all Viber data, including your account).
- Reboot the phone.
After resetting, Viber will be as just installed - you will have to reset:
- π± Enter the phone number and confirm it through SMS.
- π Restore chats from backup (if any).
- βοΈ Set up notifications and confidentiality.
On Redmi models with MIUI 13/14, Viber may request permission to access contacts and storage after reset β do not forget to provide them, otherwise the messenger will not be able to synchronize correspondence.

6.Viber Optimization to Save Memory on Xiaomi
To prevent Viber from bloating again in a week, set it to minimal memory consumption. Here are the key options to change on Xiaomi Redmi:
Turn off autoload media:
- π₯ Go to Viber Settings β Media β Autoboot.
- π« Turn off Photos, Videos and Files for Mobile Data and Wi-Fi.
- β Leave only audio if you use voice messages.
Limit media storage:
- ποΈ In the same Media section, select Media Warehouse.
- π Install Delete in 30 days for photos and videos (this will automatically clean old files).
Turn off unnecessary notifications:
- π Viber settings β Notifications β Turn off notifications for groups and channels that are not important.
- π΅ This will reduce the amount of data loaded in the background.
π‘
Even after all the settings, Viber will consume memory, but now you control what is stored and how much, the main thing is to regularly clear the cache and check the folders with media.
7. Alternative methods: transfer Viber to a memory card
If the internal memory Xiaomi Redmi catastrophically lacks space and Viber takes several gigabytes, you can transfer some data to the memory of the company. SD-But there are nuances:
- β Media files (photos, videos) can be transferred manually through the file manager.
- β The app and message base cannot be moved β Viber does not support this feature on Android.
How to move media:
- Put it in. SD-card to phone (if not, buy a class at least below) A1 or UHS-I speed).
- Open the File Manager and go to /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.viber.voip/.
- Select the Viber Images, Viber Videos, etc. folders, click Cut.
- Go to the SD-map, /storage/1234-5678/) And insert the folders.
- In Viber, go to Settings β Media β Download folder and point the way to SD-map.
β οΈ
Note: After the media transfer to SD-Viber card can work slower when opening old files, and do not remove the memory card while using the messenger - this can lead to loss of access to chats.
