Why is Redmi 7 slowing down and what does it have to do with memory?
Your Xiaomi Redmi 7 has started to hang, applications spontaneously close, and the notification βNot enough memoryβ appears almost every hour? The reason lies in the peculiarities of the architecture of the smartphone. the 2019 model is equipped with only 2/3 GB of RAM and 16/32 GB of ROM (depending on the modification), and the MIUI system by default reserves up to 6-8 GB for your needs. This means that even with βcleanβ firmware, the user is available no more than 20-25 GB of the declared 32.
To make matters worse, MIUI aggressively caches data: temporary application files, image thumbnails, system logs, and even duplicate media created by a gallery. For example, one Facebook app can eat up to 1.5 GB of cache per month when used actively, and considering that Redmi 7 does not support adoptable storage, each megabyte counts.
But the good news is that up to 70 percent of the space you occupy can be freed up without root rights or loss of identity, and we'll go from the simplest (hand-disposal) to the most radical (factory reset).
1. The analysis of occupied memory: what exactly eats the place?
Before you clean, you need to figure out which files are taking up memory. MIUI has a built-in tool for this β Settings β Phone β Memory. Here you will see a diagram of the distribution by category: System, Applications, Media, Cash and Others.
Pay attention to the points:
- π± System - here is the volume occupied by firmware MIUI And pre-installed applications. Norm for Redmi. 7: 8-12 GB: If the number is larger, it is possible that updates that did not clear after installation have been installed.
- ποΈ Cache: Temporary application files. More than 1 GB of cache signals need to clear.
- π΅ Media - photo, video and music. Redmi 7 automatically creates thumbnails (.thumbnail) and backups of media in the folder MIUI/Backup.
- π The other is the most insidious partition (/data/log), Error dumps and files of Xiaomi debugging services.
If the "Other" section is more than 3 GB, it's a reason for deep cleaning.
- π Logs of the system (/data/anr, /data/tombstones) β Created when applications fail.
- π Update files (/cache) β remain after the patches have been installed MIUI.
- ποΈ Duplicate databases (.db-wal,.db-shm) β created by messengers and social networks.
2. Cleaning the application cache and system
The safest way to release 1-3 GB is to remove the cache, and in MIUI, you can do it in two ways: for individual applications or globally for the entire system.
Clearing the cache of individual applications
Go to Settings β Applications β App Management. Select the most voracious app (like YouTube or TikTok) and click Clear Cache. For convenience, sort the list by size:
- Slip three points in the top right corner.
- Select Sort. β By size.
- Clear the cache from applications that are larger than 100MB.
Global cache cleanup
For mass cleaning:
- Go to Settings. β Warehouse.
- Click on Clear in the section "Cached data".
- Confirm the action.
This method removes the cache of all applications, but does not affect personal data (logins, messages, media).
Close all active applications
Connect your phone to charge (if charge < 20%)
Backup of important data (optional)
Do not interrupt the cleaning process-->
β οΈ Warning: After clearing the cache, some apps (like Google Maps or Instagram) will take longer to load when they first run.
3. Removal of unnecessary applications and duplicates
Redmi 7 comes with Xiaomi apps (Mi Browser, Mi Video, Mi Music) that cannot be removed by standard means, but can be turned off so they donβt take up memory or waste resources.
Disabling system applications
Instructions:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select an unneeded app (such as Mi Browser).
- Click Disable (the button will appear if the application cannot be removed).
- Confirm the action.
Disabled applications will not be updated and take up space in memory, but their icons will remain on the menu (become gray).
3.2. Removal of duplicate media files
MIUI has an unpleasant feature: when editing a photo or video in the gallery, the original file is not replaced, but stored next to the edited copy, as a result, after a year of use, 2-5 GB of duplicates can accumulate on the phone.
To find and remove them:
- Open the Gallery and go to the album Recently Deleted (there may be files that you erased long ago, but they still take up space).
- Use an app to find duplicates, like Files by Google or CCleaner.
- Manually check folders: /storage/emulated/0/DCIM/.thumbnails /storage/emulated/0/Pictures/Screenshots/ There are often thumbnails and old screenshots.
π‘
Before you delete duplicates, sort files in the gallery by size (click three dots β Sort β Size) so you can quickly find the heaviest media that can be transferred to a memory card or to the cloud.
4. Cleaning the "Other" section (logs, dumps, temporary files)
The "Other" section of memory analysis is the real Redmi 7 black hole, and it's a collection of files that are not visible to the user through standard Explorer, but take up gigabytes.
| Type of file | Location. | How to clean up |
|---|---|---|
| System logs (.log,.txt) | /data/log, /data/anr | Root rights or ADB are required |
| Error dumps (.dmp,.tombstone) | /data/tombstones | Removed via Storage Analyzer or ADB |
| Temporary update files | /cache | Cleaning through Recovery Mode |
| Cash Dalvik. | /data/dalvik-cache | Only through TWRP or reset |
Without root rights, it is difficult to clean these files, but you can use workarounds:
Cleaning through Safe Mode
Restart your phone in Safe Mode (press the power button β long tap on "Stop" β "Reboot in Safe Mode"). In this mode, all third-party apps are disabled, and you can:
- π§Ή Delete files from the folder /storage/emulated/0/Download (often lie there forgotten APK archives).
- ποΈ Clean the Recycle Bin in Gallery and File Manager.
- π Check the folder. /storage/emulated/0/Android/data β here applications store their data (game cache, instant messenger downloads).
4.2.Use of ADB (without root)
If you are ready to use ADB, follow the following commands to clean Dalvik cache and temporary files:
adb shell pm trim-caches 1G
adb shell rm -rf /data/local/tmp/*
adb shell rm -rf /cache/*These commands are secure and do not require superuser rights.
β οΈ Note: Do not delete files in folders /system or /vendor β This will lead to a device blink (completely inoperable). -rf / β It erases the entire file system.
5. Transfer data to memory card and cloud
Redmi 7 supports microSD cards up to 256 GB, but with a caveat: not all data can be transferred. For example, applications are installed by default in internal memory, and you can transfer them to SD only with root rights or through ADB.
What can be transferred without root:
- π· Photos and videos - through the Gallery (select files) β Move it β Select a memory card).
- π΅ Music and podcasts β through any file manager (e.g. Files by Google).
- π Documents β manually or through Google Drive/Mi Cloud.
To automate the transfer:
- Install FolderSync or Automate from Google Play.
- Set up the task of transferring new files from the folder DCIM/Camera on SD-map.
- Activate sync with Google Photos (settings β Backup and Sync).

6. Reset to factory settings (last measure)
If all previous methods failed and there is less than 1 GB of free memory, you will have to resort to hard reset, which deletes all data, including applications, settings and media, so first:
- π Make a backup copy through Settings β Additionally. β Backup and reset.
- π± Transfer photos and contacts to a memory card or cloud.
- π Write down logins and passwords from accounts (they will erase!).
Resetting instructions:
- Go to Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Choose to erase all data.
- Enter a pattern lock or PIN-code.
- Confirm the action.
The process will take 5-10 After the reboot, the phone will be like new, with 10-12 GB of free memory.
β οΈ Attention: Redmi 7 with firmware MIUI 12+ After the reset, you may need to link to your Mi Account if you have previously activated the Device Protection feature!
π‘
Factory reset is the only way to get back the 10-12GB of memory, but it erases everything, including the hidden files of the system. Use it only if other methods have failed.
7.Memory optimization after cleaning
To prevent memory from getting clogged again, follow these rules:
- π΅ Limit the background activity of applications: Settings β Battery and productivity β Battery management β Choice of applications β Set "Limit background activity".
- π Turn off automatic app updates in Google Play (settings) β Auto-update of applications β "Never").
- ποΈ Regularly (once a month) clean the Download folder and the gallery basket.
- π« Avoid Google Play memory cleaners β they often create more trash than they remove.
It is also useful to disable unnecessary system services:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management β Three Dots β Show all applications.
- Find and Disable: MiuiDaemon AnalyticsCore MSA (Mobile Security Agent) These services collect data for Xiaomi, but are not critical to the phoneβs performance.
