The “Other” section of Xiaomi’s smartphone memory is a real “black hole” for gigabytes of data. You delete photos, clean the app cache, and the space is still melting away? The problem lies in hidden system files, update remnants, logs and fragmented data that MIUI does not show in the standard file manager. According to our tests, on Redmi Note 12 Pro+ and Xiaomi 13T devices, the “Other” section can take up from 5 to 20 GB – and this is despite the fact that the user has not installed new applications for a long time!
In this article, we will discuss 7 ways to clean up, including hidden MIUI functions, commands via ADB, and even manual garbage removal via Root (for advanced ones). Importantly, not all methods are safe - some can cause failures if performed incorrectly. We have marked the risky steps with special warnings so that you can choose the best option without harming the system.

1.What is the “Other” in Xiaomi’s memory and why it takes up so much space
The Others section (or "Other" in English) is a container for all files that the system cannot categorize as standard (photos, videos, apps, etc.) and includes:
- 🔄 Remains of updates MIUI OTA — time-file 3-4 GB that is not always removed after installation
- 🧹 Cache system services (com.android.systemui, com.miui.home) – can weigh up to 1-2 GB
According to our tests, Xiaomi 13 Ultra took 12.7 GB after a year of using Others — while the standard memory cleaner in MIUI found only 1.2 GB of garbage, the difference arises because the system hides from the user critical files, the removal of which can disrupt the phone.
The main problem: MIUI doesn't provide built-in tools for deep cleaning of this partition. Even the Deep Clean function in Settings → Memory only removes surface debris. To make room, you'll have to use workarounds.
2. Safe ways to clean “Other” without Root rights
If you don't have a superuser (Root) right, start with these methods. They don't require technical skills and are suitable for most users.
2.1 Cleaning through the built-in file manager
Step 1: Open the Files app (folder icon) and go to the Cleanup tab.
Step 2: Click Deep Clean → Other → Clean. The system will show files that can be deleted without risk.
Limitation: This method only removes the 10-15% The rest of the trash is left untouched.
Removal of the cache of system applications
Some MIUI applications (e.g., Topics, Security, Music) accumulate gigabytes of unnecessary data to clean them up:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Sort by size (click on the three dots in the upper right corner).
- Select applications with a large cache (from 500 MB) and click on Clear cache and Delete data (if possible).
Warning: Do not clear data in Settings, Phone or Google Services apps – this could cause crashes!
Use of third-party cleaners
Apps like Files by Google, SD Maid, or CCleaner can find additional junk, such as SD Maid detects:
- 🗑️ Remnants of Remote Applications (/data/app-lib)
- 🔍 Empty folders and unnecessary.nomedia files
- 📁 Duplicate files in different folders
💡
Before using cleaners, back up important data. Some programs (such as CCleaner) can delete files necessary for MIUI to work.

3. Advanced methods: Cleaning through ADB and hidden menus
If the standard methods didn't work, try these techniques, which require you to connect your phone to your computer or activate your developer mode.
Cleaning through ADB (without Root)
With ADB (Android Debug Bridge), you can delete hidden files that are not available through the interface.
- 🖥️ Computer with Platform Tools installed
- 📱 Included mode “Debugging by” USB» (Settings → The phone. → Version. MIUI → 7 times press → Additionally. → For developers)
Cleaning commands (do one at a time!):
adb shell pm clear com.miui.cleanmaster # Cleaning up a standard cleaner
adb shell rm -rf /data/local/tmp/* # Delete temporary files
adb shell rm -rf /cache/* # Cleaning the cache systemWarning: Rm -rf without specifying the correct path can erase critical data!
Hidden menu of engineering mode
MIUI has a hidden diagnostic menu where you can reset some system logs to get there:
- Open the phone app.
- Enter the code: ##4636###.
- Go to Usage Statistics» → «Clear App Data».
This will remove the app usage statistics, which sometimes take up to 1-2GB.

4. Cleaning "Other" with Root Rights: Full Control
If you're willing to take the risk of getting Root access, you can remove up to 90% of the garbage from the Others section, warning: this will void the warranty and can lead to a phone "brick" if you act carelessly.
Removal of unnecessary system folders
With Root Explorer or FX File Manager, go to the following directories and delete their contents:
| The way to the folder | What's stored | Is it safe to remove? |
|---|---|---|
| /data/log | Logs of error and dumps | ✅ Yes (releases) 1-3 GB) |
| /data/local/tmp | Temporary update files | ✅ Yes, up to 500MB) |
| /data/system/package_cache | Cache installed by APK | ⚠️ Partially (may slow down application installation) |
| /data/misc/apexdata | Project Mainline Module Data | ❌ No (critically for Android 12)+) |
⚠️ Note: Never delete files in folders /system, /vendor or /boot — This will make it impossible to load the phone!
4.2 Disabling unnecessary system services
Some MIUI services are constantly logging and taking up space, and you can turn them off via Titanium Backup or ADB:
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.analytics # Disables Analytics Gathering
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.xiaomi.midrop # Disables Mi Drop (if not used)5. How to prevent the growth of "other" in the future
To prevent the “Other” section from getting clogged again, follow these tips:
- 🔄 Turn off automatic theme loading in Settings → Topics → Settings → Auto-update themes.
- 📱 Set a limit on background processes (Settings) → Battery → Limitation of background activity).
- 🚫 Do not use Fast Charging constantly – it speeds up memory wear and fragmentation.
- 🔍 Regularly check memory with Storage Analyzer (app shows hidden files).
💡
Even after it's completely cleaned, the Others will grow over time, which is normal, as long as it doesn't exceed its volume. 10-15% total cellphone memory.
6. Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
Many users make the problem with “Other” worse by making these mistakes:
- They use Factory Reset as a panacea, and when you reset, update files and logs remain, and some data is stored in /data/misc.
- Delete files manually without backup, for example, cleaning the /data/data folder will result in the removal of all applications and their data.
- Ignoring updates MIUI. In newer versions, firmware often optimizes memory management (for example, in the MIUI 15 added automatic log cleaner).
⚠️ Warning: If after cleaning the phone started to brake, restart it in Safe Mode (press the power button). → «Restarting in Safe Mode. This will help identify a problem application.
7. Alternative solutions: what to do if nothing helps
If the “Other” is more than 10 GB and is not cleaned by any method, consider these options:
- 🔧 Fastboot Firmware Re-installation. MIUI Delete all hidden files, but require unlocking the bootloader.
- 📱 Replacement of memory module: On some models (for example, Redmi Note 10 Pro) the problem is associated with a defect in flash memory (eMMC).
- ☁️ Transfer of data to SD-The map. → Memory. → Default storage can be selected memory card as the main storage.
💡
Before flashing, check if the warranty has expired. Unlocking the bootloader resets all data and can result in the blocking of the Mi Account for 7 days.
