Xiaomi’s smartphones, including the popular Redmi line, are famous for their functionality and affordable price. However, even the most powerful devices eventually start to work slower, and free space in memory disappears for no apparent reason. Often the culprit of this behavior is accumulated cache — temporary files that applications create to speed up their work.
Understanding how to manage this data is key to keeping your gadget running for a long time and stable. Unlike junk files, cache isn’t always harmful, but too much can lead to program conflicts and a lack of space for new photos or videos. In this article, we’ll take a look at all the cleaning methods, from simple embedded tools to advanced methods.
It's not just about mindlessly deleting everything, it's about understanding the difference between application data and their temporary files. Cache deleting doesn't erase your logins, passwords, or game saves, unlike completely cleaning up your data. It's a safe procedure that should be done regularly to maintain optimal performance for MIUI or HyperOS.
What is cache and why you need to clean it
Cache is a buffer memory that stores temporary data from frequently used programs. For example, the browser stores copies of visited pages so that when you re-enter the site loads instantly. Social networks cache the images and thumbnails viewed so that the news feed scrolls smoothly and without delay.
The problem arises when the size of such files becomes too large or they get corrupted. Instead of speeding up work, an outdated cache begins to slow down the system, causing display errors or forced closure of applications. On Xiaomi devices with their aggressive memory optimization, a crowded cache can even block the launch of new programs.
Regular cleaning helps free up precious gigabytes of internal memory, which is especially true for models with low storage capacity, and it solves a lot of software glitches when the application is not working correctly. If you notice that the phone is starting to heat up or the battery is shorter, checking the cache is the first step of diagnosis.
⚠️ Note: Do not confuse cache cleaning with data cleaning. When you delete the data, the application will return to state immediately after installation, and you will have to re-enter all settings and authorization data.
There is a myth that cache needs to be cleaned every day, and in fact, for most users, it's enough to do this once a week or when the system itself signals a shortage of space, and overzeal can lead to the opposite effect: the processor will have to recreate temporary files, using up battery power and resources.
Cleaning the cache through the built-in Security app
The easiest and safest way to free up space on Xiaomi Redmi is to use a regular tool from the developer. Security is already preinstalled in the system and has access to all necessary system functions, which ensures that temporary files are deleted correctly.
To get started, look for an icon on your desktop or in the Tools folder called Security and a green shield. When you run the program, you'll see a large green button with an optimization percentage, and clicking on it will start scanning the system for junk files, including app cache, remnants of remote programs and advertising files.
Once the scan is complete, the system will suggest removing the debris found. Press the Clean to start the process. This action is safe and will not affect your personal photos, contacts or documents. The built-in MIUI algorithm determines which files can be deleted without harming the operating system.
☑️ Verification through the Security Application
It's worth noting that this method only removes surface cache. Some applications, like Telegram or YouTube, store huge amounts of media files in their internal folders, which a standard scanner can find important data and skip. Deep cleaning will require manual intervention, which we'll discuss below.
💡
Use the “Accelerate” function in the Security app to close the background processes, which also helps reduce the load on RAM and reduce the heating of the case.
Manually cleaning the cache of specific applications
If a memory or work problem occurs in just one particular program, it makes no sense to clean the entire phone. Android allows you to manage the storage of each application separately, which is especially useful for "heavy" programs such as navigators, social networks and instant messengers.
To get to the management menu, go to Settings → Applications → All apps. In the list that opens, find the desired program, such as Instagram or Yandex.Maps. Tap by name to open the application information page, where you will see the space occupied and control buttons.
At the bottom of the screen, you'll find two important buttons: Clear and Delete. We're interested in the "Clean" button. When you click on it, the system will offer two options: Clear cache and Clear all (or Reset), and select the first option to delete only temporary files.
| Annex | Cache type | Recommended cleaning frequency | Impact on data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser (Chrome) | Copies of pages, scripts | Once every 2 weeks | Re-entry to the sites is required |
| Telegram | Photo, video, voice | Once a month | Media will be rebooted |
| YouTube | Miniatures, video buffer | If necessary, | No loss of subscriptions |
| Google Maps | Area maps, routes | For navigational errors | Offline card reset |
Sometimes the "Clear Cache" button may be inactive (gray), which means that the application is currently running or updating. Try forcefully stop the program through the Stop menu in the same settings window, after which the cleanup will be available.
⚠️ Warning: If you accidentally choose Clear Everything or Reset, the app will return to factory settings. Make sure you remember your login passwords, as you will have to log in again.
Delete temporary files through the developer menu
For more advanced users of Xiaomi smartphones, there is access to hidden functions of the system. The developer menu allows not only to debug applications, but also to manage processes in more detail, although there is no direct button to clear all cache there, you can manage the state of services.
To activate this mode, you need to go to Settings → About Phone and quickly click on the MIUI version (or OS version) 7 times. Once the notification “You became a developer” appears, you can move to advanced settings. The path to these is usually in the Additional → For Developers section.
Here, you should pay attention to the partition related to background processes. Limiting the number of processes can indirectly affect the rate of cache accumulation, since applications will be less likely to remain in memory in a folded form. However, be careful: incorrect settings here can lead to unstable interface operation.
Should you use ADB for cleaning?
You can also find a "Do Not Activity" feature on the developer menu, which if you turn it on, the system will destroy the application as soon as you leave it, which is a radical method of cache control, but it will significantly increase battery consumption, since applications will be loaded from scratch every time you start.
Cleaning the cache in Recovery mode
The deepest level of cleanup is available through Recovery Mode, a method that removes temporary system files that are not available during normal Android booting, which is a “heavy artillery” that should be used if the phone is malfunctioning, freezes or there are errors after the system update.
To enter this mode, you need to turn off your smartphone completely, then press the Volume+ button and the Power button simultaneously, hold them until the Mi logo or Recovery menu appears, and some models may require a charger connection.
In the Recovery menu, you can navigate with volume buttons (up and down), and the power button confirms the choice. You need to find Wipe Data or Wipe Cache. It's important not to confuse it: Wipe Cache will only delete temporary files, and Wipe All Data will erase everything from your phone, including photos and contacts.
⚠️ Attention: In new versions MIUI HyperOS access to Recovery Mode can be blocked by the screen unlock password or Mi Account. Make sure you remember the password or you won’t be able to clean or log out of the menu.
Once you've selected a cleanup, the system will request confirmation. Select Confirm and wait until the process is over. When you're done, select Reboot. The first run after that cleanup may take longer than usual -- that's OK, the system reassembles the necessary temporary files.
💡
Recovery Mode is a powerful diagnostic and repair tool, but only use it when standard cleaning methods don’t help solve performance issues.
Automation and third-party utilities
Manual cleaning can get boring, so many users are turning to automation. Xiaomi smartphones already have a built-in "Planner" feature in the Security app, where you can set up automatic garbage cleaning at a set time, for example, at night when the phone is not in use.
There are many third-party apps from Google Play, such as CCleaner or Files by Google. These can be useful if the built-in tools don’t seem functional enough, but it’s worth remembering that installing an additional antivirus or cliner on Android is often redundant and can even slow down the device.
When choosing third-party software, pay attention to the permissions that the program requests. A good cleaner should not require access to your contacts, microphone, or geolocation.
- 📂 Files by Google – the official application with a smart algorithm for finding duplicates and large files.
- 🧹 SD Maid is a powerful tool for advanced users, able to find the tails of remote applications.
- 🚀 Clean Master is a popular but heavyweight option with a lot of advertising features that can be superfluous.
Using MIUI embedded tools is still a priority, the system knows better what files can be deleted without risking breaking firmware integrity, and third-party programs should be considered as an auxiliary tool for finding large forgotten files.
