Why Google Storage is Filling with Xiaomi and What to Do About It
Xiaomi smartphone owners often face a notification that says, โGoogle storage is almost full,โ even if there is enough space on the device, because Google Drive, Google Photos and other services sync data in the cloud, occupying your account quota. On Redmi, POCO or Mi, this is especially acute due to the active use of MIUI backups.
The main โeatersโ of space in Google Storage: 1) Automatic MIUI backups (including SMS, contacts, settings). 2) Photos and videos in original quality in Google Photos. 3) Cache applications such as YouTube, Gmail or Google Maps. 4 Deleted files that are still stored in the โRecycle Binโ of Google Drive.
If you donโt clean the storage in time, you risk losing access to sync contacts, photos and other important data. Fortunately, there are several ways to free up space on Xiaomi, from manual cleaning to disabling unnecessary features.
Method 1: Remove MIUI backups in Google Drive
Xiaomi smartphones back up system data in Google Drive by default, which can weigh anywhere from 500 MB to several gigabytes, many of which users donโt even know exist, to delete:
- Open the Google Drive app on your phone.
- Slap the icon. โฐ (three-line) โ select Warehouse.
- Scroll down to Backup, where you will see copies from your Xiaomi marked with the model name (e.g. Redmi Note 12 Pro+).
- Select an unnecessary copy โ press โฎ (three-point) โ Delete backup copy.
If you're afraid of losing data, first check which files are stored in the copy.
- ๐ Open a backup copy in Google Drive โ Check Apps, Call History, Device Settings.
- ๐ Make sure that important contacts and SMS Dubbed in other services (e.g. Mi Cloud).
- ๐๏ธ Remove copies older than 6 months โ they are rarely up to date.
Outdated copies (over 3-6 months)
App cache (Apps folder)
Unnecessary settings (Device Settings)
Duplicate contacts (Contacts)
-->
โ ๏ธ Note: If you delete the backup copy MIUI, It will not be possible to restore the phone settings after resetting. First, save important data manually (for example, export contacts to a.vcf file).
Method 2: Clean Google Photos from Unnecessary Media Files
Google Photos is the main culprit behind Xiaomiโs overcrowded storage. By default, the app uploads all photos and videos in original quality, quickly eating up the free 15GB. Hereโs how to free up space:
- Open Google Photos โ tap on the avatar in the upper right corner โ Storage management.
- Select Clear Place โ the system will automatically find: ๐ธ Blurred or repetitive photos. ๐ฅ Large videos (for example, recorded in the 4K). ๐ Screenshots over 30 days.
Confirm the removal of unnecessary files.
For deeper cleaning:
- ๐ Use the filter by size: in Google Photos click Search โ Files. > 10MB.
- ๐๏ธ Remove videos from the WhatsApp or Telegram folder โ they are often duplicated.
- ๐ฅ Turn off autoboot: Settings โ Backup and synchronization โ Choose High Quality over Original Quality.
| Type of file | Average size | How to clean up |
|---|---|---|
| Photo in original quality | 3-10 MB | Resave in "High Quality" |
| Video 4K | 100-500 MB | Remove or reduce permission |
| Screenshots | 1-5 MB | Remove over 30 days |
| Cash editing | up to 1GB | Clean in Settings โ Clear the cache |

Before mass deletion, download your photos to your computer or external drive. Use the Export function in Google Photos or Google Takeout for archiving.
Method 3: Disable autosynchronization of unnecessary data
Many Xiaomi apps automatically sync data to Google Storage, which is convenient but often redundant, such as Google Contacts can duplicate Mi Account entries, and Google Keep can store unnecessary notes.
To disable unnecessary synchronization:
- Go to Settings โ Accounts and Sync โ Google.
- Select your account โ Synchronization of the account.
- Turn off switches near unnecessary services: ๐ Contacts (if you use Mi Cloud). ๐ Calendar (if you do not keep records). ๐ Google Keep (if you don't use the notes). ๐ต Google Play Music (if you donโt store tracks in the cloud).
Also check the settings of individual applications:
- ๐ง In Gmail: Turn off attachment caching (Settings) โ Data data โ Cash).
- ๐บ๏ธ In Google Maps: Delete offline maps (Settings) โ Offline maps โ Delete).
- ๐ฎ In Google Play Games: Turn off saving game progress (Settings) โ Gambling services).
โ ๏ธ Note: Disabling Contact Sync will cause communication between the phone book and Google to be lost. Before doing so, export contacts to.vcf via Contacts โ Settings โ Imports/Exports.
Method 4: Cleaning up the cache of Google applications
Googleโs app cache (like YouTube, Chrome or Play Store) can take up to 1-2 GB on Xiaomi, which is not synced to the cloud, but affects the performance of the phone.
To clear the cache:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- In the search bar, type the name of the app (such as Google or YouTube).
- Select the application โ Storage โ Clear the cache.
For mass cleaning:

- ๐ Reboot your phone after cleaning it will reset temporary data.
- ๐ Check the free space in the Settings โ Warehouse.

Method 5: Delete files from the Google Drive Recycle Bin

To clear the basket:
- Open Google Drive. โ slip โฐ โ Basket.
- Press. โฎ โ Clean the basket.
- Confirm the action.
If you want to recover something from the Recycle Bin:
- ๐ Find the file. โ press โฎ โ Restore.

- ๐ฅ For important files, use the Save to your device function.
๐ก
Files in the Google Drive Recycle Bin rank in your quota even if you deleted them. Clean the Recycle Bin regularly or set up automatic deletion after 7 days in Settings โ Storage Management.
Additional tips for Xiaomi owners
