Xiaomi Redmi 8 is one of the most popular budget smartphones, but its 32 or 64 GB of memory is quickly clogged with the mysterious “Other” section. Users often face a situation where the system shows that there is almost no free space left, even though photos, videos and applications take up only half the volume. What is the matter? Why does the “Other” partition on Redmi 8 grow to 10-15 GB, and how to safely clean it without the risk of “killing” the phone?
In this article, we will look at 7 proven ways, from standard MIUI tools to hidden features and third-party utilities, which files can be deleted without consequences and which cannot be touched categorically (for example, the /data/dalvik-cache folder, which will clean up the reboot cycle), and we will analyze why the Other returns again and how to minimize its growth in the future.
Important: the instructions are adapted specifically for Redmi 8 (models M1908C3JG, M1908C3JH, M1908C3JI) with MIUI 11-14 firmware. On new versions (for example, HyperOS), some paths may differ - we will also mention this.
What is the “Other” section on Xiaomi Redmi 8 and why it takes up so much space
The Other section of MIUI is a collection of system files that do not fall into the Applications, Media or Cache categories.
- 📁 Application cache and systems – temporary files that have not been deleted after updates or closing programs.
- 🔄 Residual data from remote applications (such as settings or databases that have not been completely cleaned).
- 📱 Firmware and update files - packages OTA, who have not been able to do so, but have not.
- 🗑️ Logs and dumps - error reports (/data/tombstones), system creates when it fails.
- 🔒 Encrypted data – for example, files DRM streaming.
On the Redmi 8, two factors exacerbate the problem:
- Small memory: even in the 64 GB version, the system is allocated ~10 GB, and the rest is quickly clogged.
- Features of MIUI: firmware actively caches data to speed up work, but does not always clean them correctly.
In our testing, on Redmi. 8 s MIUI 12.5 The “other” section is on average 8-12 GB after a year of use, but it's actually safe to clean up before 60-70% volume.
⚠️ Note: Do not attempt to delete files from the Other manually through the file manager unless you know their purpose. /data/app-lib It contains application libraries – cleaning it will lead to the collapse of programs.
Method 1: Cleaning through the built-in MIUI storage
The safest method is to use the MIUI tool, which will not delete critical files, but will help to get rid of garbage:
- Open the Settings → Storage.
- Slip on the "Other" section (may be called "Other" in older versions).
- Wait for the analysis (can take up to 2 minutes).
- Click on “Clean” or “Delete unnecessary files”.
The system will suggest that you delete:
- 🧹 App cache (safe).
- 📥 Download files from the Download folder (check if there is any important file in the file).
- 🗑️ Logs and temporary files (can be deleted).
On Redmi 8, this method frees up 1-3 GB. If the volume of the "Other" has not decreased, move on to the following methods.
Method 2: Remove the cache of all applications (including system)
App cache can take gigabytes, especially if you are actively using social networks, instant messengers or games. Cleaning through Settings → Applications takes too long, so use the hidden MIUI function:
- Open the Settings. → The phone.
- Tap 7 times on the line "Version" MIUI» (A message will appear saying, “You’ve become a developer»).
- Return to the main settings menu, open “Advanced Settings” → “For developers”.
- Find the “Do Not Save Actions” option and turn it on.
- Reboot the phone.
After the reboot:
- Go to Settings → Storage → Other → Cash applications.
- Click on “Clear All” (confirmation may be required).
This method removes all temporary files, including the cache of system applications (such as Mi Video or Mi Music), which are not normally cleared in standard ways.On Redmi 8, this frees up to 4-5 GB.
⚠️ Warning: After cleaning the cache, some apps (like YouTube or TikTok) will take longer to load when first run.
Back up your important data | Charge your phone at least 50% | Close all background apps | Turn off automatic app updates-->
Method 3: Delete Residual Files of Remote Applications
When you delete an app through Play Market or Settings, MIUI does not always clear all associated files.
- 📂 Folders in /Android/data and /Android/obb.
- 🗃️ Databases in /data/data (root-only).
- 📄 Configuration files in /sdcard.
To remove them:
- Install a file manager with access to system folders (e.g. FX File Explorer or Solid Explorer).
- Go to /storage/emulated/0/Android/data.
- Delete folders with the names of remote applications (for example, com.faceapp or com.zenui.weather).
- Repeat the same for /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb.
Redmi 8 can accumulate up to 2-3 GB of garbage after a year of use, especially games (PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty) and social networks (Facebook, VK).
| Type of file | Size on Redmi 8 (approximately) | Can I remove it? |
|---|---|---|
| Cash Google Play Services | 500 MB - 1.5 GB | Yes (updates automatically) |
| Facebook/Instagram remnants | 300MB - 1GB | Yes. |
| PUBG Mobile files in /obb | 1.5 - 2.5 GB | Yes, if the game is deleted. |
| System logs (/data/tombstones) | 100 - 500 MB | Yeah (root requires) |
💡
Before deleting folders in /Android/data, check their change date. If the folder has not been used for more than a month, it can be safely deleted.
Method 4: Clean Download folder and instant messenger downloads
The Download folder and messenger directories (WhatsApp, Telegram) often contain unnecessary files that the system refers to as "Other."
- 📎 APK-file.
- 📄 Documents (PDF, Excel, which has not been opened for a long time.
- 🎵 Audio and video from chats (voice messages, memes).
- 🖼️ Images from web pages (browser cache).
How to clean:
- Open any file manager (such as Mi File Manager).
- Go to /storage/emulated/0/Download.
- Sort files by date (from old to new) and delete the unnecessary.
- For messengers: 📱 WhatsApp: /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp/Media. 📱 Telegram: /storage/emulated/0/Telegram.
On Redmi 8 in the Download folder can accumulate up to 5 GB per year, and in messengers - another 3-4 GB. Especially a lot of space is occupied by videos from Telegram channels (they are saved automatically).

Method 5: Remove old MIUI updates (.OTA folder)
Xiaomi saves update files in the hidden /.OTA folder, even after installation. On Redmi 8, these files can take up to 2GB and not be deleted automatically.
To clean them up:
- Enable the display of hidden files in the file manager (in Mi File Manager: ⋮ → Settings → Show hidden files).
- Go to the root directory of the storage (/storage/emulated/0/).
- Find the.OTA folder and delete its contents.
If the folder is not deleted, the system is using it for the current update.
- Go to Settings → About the phone → System update.
- If there is an incomplete update, install it or cancel the download.
- Then, repeat the removal of /.OTA.
⚠️ Attention: Do not delete the folder /.OTA The entire folder is just the contents. The folder itself is needed for future updates.
Method 6: Reset the partition cache (wipe cache partition) via Recovery
If previous methods didn’t work, try clearing the recovery cache, which will delete temporary system files that aren’t visible through standard tools.
Instructions for Redmi 8:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the Power button + Volume up until the Mi logo appears.
- Select the language (if the menu appears).
- Go to Recovery → Wipe & Reset → Wipe Cache
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion.
- Reboot your phone (Reboot → System)
This method doesn't delete personal data, but resets the core cache and dalvik cache. On Redmi 8, it frees up to 1GB and speeds up the system.
If after resetting the phone is long loaded (5-10 minutes) – this is normal: the system restores the cache of applications.
💡
Recovery cache dumping is the only way to clean up system debris that is not visible normally, and do this every 3-6 months for prevention.
Method 7: Advanced cleaning with ADB (for experienced)
If you are willing to use the command prompt, ADB will help you delete files that are not available through standard methods.
- 🗑️ Cleaning dalvik-cache (requires a reboot).
- 🧹 Removal of old APK from /data/app.
- 📊 Resetting of application usage statistics.
Instructions:
- Install ADB on your computer (download Platform Tools from Google).
- Turn on USB Debugging on your phone (Settings → About Phone → MIUI Version (Tap 7 times) → **Developers → USB Debugging).
- Connect Redmi 8 to your PC and confirm your trust.
- Open the command line in the folder with ADB and type: adb shell pm trim-caches 1000G adb shell cmd package bg-dexopt-job
These teams:
- Clear the cache of all applications (trim-caches).
- Optimize dex files to save space.
To clean dalvik-cache (only if you know what you're doing!):
adb shell su
rm -rf /data/dalvik-cache/*
reboot⚠️ Attention: Command rm -rf /data/dalvik-cache/* It requires root rights, and it can lead to a reboot cycle if it's done incorrectly.
